Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas State doesn’t have Bijan Robinson.

Yeah, the Wildcat running game is amazing – and it does have Deuce Vaughn – but for the first time all season Kansas looked like … Kansas.

Texas got 243 rushing yards and four scores out of Robinson as part of the 427 the team came up with, but that’s baked into the KU cake. It’s just not that great against the run, but it usually overcomes it with its own offensive production.

Kansas State takes things up a few notches once the defense starts taking the ball away, but Kansas hasn’t been too bad at limiting the mistakes lately. Penalties haven’t been a real problem all year, and as long as there aren’t multiple turnovers, the offense should be able to keep up.

The Jayhawks are the best in the Big 12 at converting on third downs, they have the league’s most efficient passing game, and …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Kansas State Will Win

Yeah, Deuce Vaughn.

He killed Kansas last year with 162 yards and three scores on just 11 carries, and he caught six passes for 70 yards. As a freshman he ran for 71 yards and a score and caught four passes for 81 yards. Just assume 100 rushing yards in this, but he hardly has to do it alone.

Will Howard has cranked up the passing game – he was terrific last week in the 48-31 win over West Virginia – for a balanced attack that should move the ball at will against the worst defense in the Big 12.

But it’s going to be about the running game.

Kansas State has 220 yards or more seven times. Kansas is 0-4 when allowing 260 yards or more, the Wildcats were able to get there three times, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Get ready for the show.

Kansas will crank up the attack to make this a fun back-and-fourth fight, but the other side will always have an answer.

The Kansas State defense is good enough against the run, the team is among them best in the country in turnover margin, and is should all come together in the 14th straight win in the series.

Kansas State vs West Virginia How To Watch

Date: Saturday, November 19

Record: Kansas State (7-3), West Virginia (4-6)

Why Kansas State Will Win

Kansas State has a Big 12 Championship appearance there for the taking.

Even with the two losses in the last four games, the 31-3 win over Baylor last week and the 48-0 stomping of Oklahoma State means a win this week and a win over Kansas next week would send the Wildcats to the title game. Or, a win in this and a Texas loss to Kansas would get it done.

The Wildcats are getting production out of both quarterbacks Adrian Martinez and Will Howard, the offense has found a terrific groove over the last several weeks, and the defense has been able to rise up in key moments and dominate.

It might not be Iowa State’s D, and it hasn’t been consistent, but it’s been great at taking the ball away – seven forced turnovers in the last three games – and allowed fewer than 310 yards of total offense in three of the last five games.

The West Virginia run defense has been rocky, the offense is turning it over a bit too much, and …

Bowl Projections

Why West Virginia Will Win

This is a different Mountaineer team at home.

It’s 1-4 away from Milan Puskar and 3-2 in the friendly confines – the offense is far, far better at home.

The attack is far more balanced, it’s able to control the clock, and it should be able to control the game at times. For all of the good things Kansas State is doing, it’s not converting on enough third downs.

If West Virginia can win the time of possession battle and grind away a bit, it should be able to keep its bowl hopes alive. It’s going to be an inspired effort on the lines, it’s going to answer every Kansas State challenge, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The turnovers will be a problem. Kansas State just doesn’t turn it over enough to matter, and the two takeaways it’ll get will overcome the big things the West Virginia offense will do.

It’ll be a fun back-and-forth fight. Both running games will be good, JT Daniels will be solid for the West Virginia passing game, and there will be chances for both sides to take over.

But being -2 in turnover margin will be the difference.

Kansas State vs Baylor Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

Gear up the offense and get ready to get it all going.

Baylor might have the second-best defense in the Big 12 according to the statistics, but it gave up close to 500 yards to Oklahoma last week, allowed 500 in the loss to West Virginia a few weeks ago, and it’s about to deal with a Kansas State offense that’s been terrific when it doesn’t turn the ball over.

The running game continues to be excellent, Adrian Martinez threw for over 300 yards against Texas, and the O should be able to rip off yards in chunks.

Again, the Baylor defense is good, but the yards are there to anyone who commits to grinding a bit. Oklahoma was able to do that, and Oklahoma State and West Virginia were able to succeed, too.

Baylor is 1-2 when allowing 150 rushing yards or more. Kansas State has hit that mark in every game but two, but …

CFP Rankings: Think, Know, Believe

Why Baylor Will Win

Turnovers matter.

Kansas State doesn’t have a problem with them – giving it up just seven times all year – but it turned it over twice against TCU and twice against Texas and lost both games.

That wouldn’t be that big a deal – again, the Wildcats don’t have a turnover issue – but Baylor’s defense is starting to do more and more to take the ball away.

It came up with just six over the first six games and went 3-3, and forced ten in the last three games and won all three fights including two on the road.

That coincided with the running game that perfect up at just the right time. The Bears have started pounding more and doing more to control the tempo, and it shows – they’re 5-0 when running for over 170 yards and 1-3 when they don’t.

Run, take the ball away, win, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Can Kansas State get nastier against the run?

Its own offense is good enough to be balanced and explosive – there’s no fear with this bunch on the road – but the run defense that struggled against TCU and Texas has to hold up.

Again, just like Baylor won when it ran well and took the ball away, Kansas State lost when it gave up yards and turned it over.

Baylor will run well and will take the ball away.

Texas vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

The two weeks off should make a difference.

Kansas State has had an interesting few weeks with the tough loss at TCU followed up by the shocking obliteration of Oklahoma State, and Texas has had a little time to rest up and be ready for the finishing kick. Now it has to be sharp.

How did Kansas State destroy the Cowboys 48-0? The defense picked a perfect time to come up with its best performance of the year, but that wasn’t normal for the run D.

Get Bijan Robinson going, keep grinding it, and getting to 200 yards is possible on the Wildcat front. It’ll be the other side, though, that matters.

Kansas State is throwing better – Will Howard was fantastic in place of a banged up Adrian Martinez against OSU – but it has to run to win.  Texas has more of a downfield passing game if Robinson and the ground attack don’t rock, but there’s a problem if Kansas State isn’t running well.

It got by Iowa State and its great defense in a fight, but it lost the other two times it was under 199 rushing yards.

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Kansas State Will Win

It’s not a bad thing when you’re trying to figure out the right good quarterback to play.

This is still Adrian Martinez’s team, but Will Howard has been too good to push aside after the performance against Oklahoma State. Everyone knows what the offense can do – get running, let Deuce Vaughn go off – but if there’s a passing game, too, look out.

Run well, hit the third down throws, and rely on the hot defense and turnover margin to get it done. The team is +9, Texas doesn’t take the ball away, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Here’s the problem. Can the Kansas State defense dominate?

Texas doesn’t have a problem moving the ball, and Kansas State is 4-0 when allowing fewer than 300 yards and 2-2 when it doesn’t.

The Longhorns will come out firing with two weeks to get ready and will have a big first half. At home, the Wildcats will settle in after halftime, the running game will take over, and the momentum from the Oklahoma State game will continue.

Oklahoma State vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Kansas State needs the offense to rise up and rock, but how healthy are the quarterbacks?

Adrian Martinez was banged up right away in the 38-28 loss to TCU. Will Howard was okay – he got hurt, too – but the offense wasn’t quite the same.

Oklahoma State’s defense is having its problems keeping points off the board, but it’s still among the best in the country on third downs, it’s okay against the run, and the plays behind the line are there to stop the Wildcat offense before it gets going.

The big problem has been the pass defense giving up a Big 12-worst 304 yards per game, but that’s not how K-State rolls. It’s not that it can’t throw; it would prefer to rumble on the ground.

Combine that with the problems the Wildcat O has on third downs, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Kansas State Will Win

The Oklahoma State defense is having a few issues against good ground games, too.

TCU ran for 224 against the Cowboys and won, Texas ran for 204 yards and almost pulled it off last week, and now Kansas State has to rely on RB Deuce Vaughn as much as possible.

Underutilized over the last two weeks with just 22 carries, the game plan has to make sure he gets the ball at least that many times after the way Bijan Robinson of Texas was able to produce last week against the Cowboys.

If Vaughn can get close to 140 yards and a score – and take a pass 41 yards for a touchdown – like Robinson did, the rest of the parts should work.

Kansas State should control the clock for at least 35 minutes, the ground game should hit 200 yards, and …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Oklahoma State passing game be consistent and can Spencer Sanders hit more than half of his passes?

The Cowboys are usually able to find ways to come up with wins in wild shootouts, but the defense that was so strong last year and has so many positives has to be far better.

Kansas State’s offense will control the clock at home, the defense should come up with two takeaways – the secondary needs to create a key interception in the second half – and the running game will rock.

Oklahoma State’s offense will be a wee bit better.

The last team with the ball wins. Once again, Oklahoma State will find a way.
