Gardner Minshew, Jawaan Taylor and Josh Allen make All-Rookie PFF team for 2019

When looking at the class from top to bottom, fans would be hard-pressed to find a team that got more out of their 2019 draft class than the Jacksonville Jaguars. While it may have gone under the radar of most casual fans, the good people at Pro Football Focus seemingly paid close attention to the group and named quarterback Gardner Minshew II, pass-rusher Josh Allen, and right tackle Jawaan Taylor to their annual All-Rookie team this past week.

Of the three, Minshew came away with the highest overall PFF grade (70.3), which was also more than first-round selections Dwayne Haskins and Kyler Murray.  According to PFF analyst Ben Linsey, Minshew especially thrived with deep ball throws, accumulating a 129.0 passer rating on passes 20 or more yards, which was a total good for the best in the league.

Allen made the cut alongside San Francisco 49ers pass-rusher Nick Bosa due to ranking behind him with the second highest pass-rushing grade (70.2) of any rookie on the edge. He also was slightly behind Bosa in total pressures with 49, pressure rate (13.7%) and win rate while pass-rushing (15.7%).

Lastly, Taylor was praised by PFF for his pass-blocking success mostly. He was the only rookie offensive tackle in the league to register 500 or more offensive snaps and record a pass-blocking grade higher than 60.0. He was also one of 20 right tackles to allow a pressure rate lower than 6.0%.

Heading into 2019, the Jags had clear needs at both quarterbacks and right tackle, so the analytics and grades compiled by PFF are certainly encouraging for the futures of Minshew and Taylor. As for Allen, he made a respectable Jags pass-rush even better, and if he continues the fast growth fans witnessed in 2019, the Jags’ have their franchise player on the roster to take Jalen Ramsey’s place.

2 Jaguars X-factors to watch vs. Colts

The Jags will look to end a season with a bang and so will Josh Allen, who they will need to have a strong day behind Yannick Ngakoue.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be looking to close the season with a bang against the Indianapolis Colts for Doug Marrone, who may be coaching in his last game with the team. With the Jags being without several key starters and entering the game as underdogs, they will need some significant contributions from some of their non-starters.

Here are two X-factors on the offensive and defensive sides who could aid the Jags to a win Week 17:

DE/LB Josh Allen

Josh Allen has had a phenomenal rookie season and should be heavily considered for Defensive Rookie of the Year. He has the chance to close the season strong and further make his case as Nick Bosa has overshadowed him despite having similar success.

Colts quarterback Jacoby Brissett has the tendency to hold on to the ball too long on occasions, and when he does, the Jags pass-rush have to make him pay. That shouldn’t be and issue for Allen, who registered a sack and two tackles against the Colts in the last meeting between these two teams.

WR Keelan Cole

The Jaguars could be down two receivers against the Colts as Michael Walker (hamstring) was ruled out on the final injury report and Dede Westbrook (neck/shoulder) is listed as questionable. That could leave the Jags with just four active receivers in DJ Chark Jr., Chris Conley, C.J. Board, and the ultimate opportunist, Keelan Cole.

Cole hasn’t necessarily received a lot of opportunities, but when he’s been called upon, he’s stepped up totaling 21 receptions for 294 yards and two touchdowns on the season. With the lack of scorers on the team, Chark not being 100% and the Colts’ pass defense being mediocre at best, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Cole step up like he did against the Oakland Raiders a few weeks ago and lead the team in receptions.

Calais Campbell headed to third consecutive Pro Bowl

Calais Campbell will represent the Jags for the third straight time in the Pro Bowl.

Jacksonville Jaguars defensive lineman Calais Campbell will be heading to his third consecutive Pro Bowl.

With the league announcing its 2019 Pro Bowl rosters for the AFC and NFC Tuesday, the Jags announced that Campbell was their lone nominee (for now) to make the initial team. The Jags also announced that five players made the cut as alternates, including placekicker Josh Lambo (first alternate), tailback Leonard Fournette (second alternate), pass rusher Josh Allen (second alternate), punter Logan Cooke (third alternate) and receiver DJ Chark Jr. (third alternate).

So far this season Campbell has been able to register 53 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles. He’s also found himself as one of Pro Football Focus top graded defensive lineman with a current grade of 90.3.

The veteran has had quite a career with both the Jags and Arizona Cardinals, accumulating a total of 688 tackles, 14 forced fumbles, and 88 sacks. His recent nomination puts him in company with Jags greats like Tony Boselli (five selections), receiver Jimmy Smith (five selections) and running back Maurice Jones-Drew (three selections) all of whom have been to three Pro Bowls or more with the franchise. He also had two nominations with the Cardinals in 2014-15.

Postgame analysis: Jags spoil Raiders’ historic day thanks to some Minshew Magic

The Jags were out-gained in total yards and time of possession but somehow managed to acquire a win over Oakland.

The Jacksonville Jaguars came into Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders with a 2-12 all-time record and a nine-game losing streak on the West Coast but that changed Week 15. With the help of some “Minshew Magic,” the Cardiac Cats were able to rain on the Raiders’ parade in their last regular season game at RingCentral Coliseum (a.k.a. Oakland Coliseum).

After a relatively flat first half on offense, Gardner Minshew II and company were able to score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, both of which were courtesy of receiver Chris Conley. Coincidentally, both drives were also the Jags’ first and last drives of the fourth quarter on offense.

The first scoring drive was an 11-play drive for 53-yards. The second scoring drive, which gave them the lead, was another one in which Jags fans will forever tie to Minshew’s name.

Minshew rallied the Jags after a missed field goal by the Raiders by hitting a combination of C.J. Board, Leonard Fournette and Conley along the way with roughly 3:30 left in the game. Before snagging the game-winning touchdown, Conley also contributed a 21-yard reception on the drive. Eventually, the Jags found themselves on the Raiders’ 4-yard line and Minshew threw a dart to Conley on a slant pattern, silencing the Oakland crowd.

Minshew finished the game 17-of-29 for 201 yards and two touchdowns. Conley, on the other hand, had four catches for 49 yards and the two aforementioned touchdowns.

Defensively, the Jags allowed 364 total yards, 236 of which came through the air, however, the pass rush came up big for the Jags in some key moments. They finished the game with four sacks on Derek Carr. Two of those sacks came from pass-rusher Yannick Ngakoue, who was unstoppable all game and also totaled five tackles. Rookie pass-rusher Josh Allen also had a solid day, acquiring his 10th sac of the season, which put him with interesting company.

Sunday’s win was a weird one, to say the least, as the Raiders out-gained the Jags in total yards (364 to 262) and had a longer time of possession (34:12 to 25:48). In the end, the Jags managed to pull off a win though and that’s all that matters.

The Jags’ next game will be on the road against the Atlanta Falcons. That game will take place at 1 p.m. ET on Dec. 22.

Injury news: Josh Allen questionable for a return vs. Raiders after shoulder (stinger) injury

The Jags may be without their leading pass-rusher, Josh Allen, for the rest of Week 15’s game against the Raiders.

Despite the Jacksonville Jaguars being down 16-3, their pass rush has been strong. Unfortunately, a key member for the unit may not return after the half though.

Rookie pass rusher Josh Allen was helped off the field in the second after sustaining a shoulder (stinger) injury. The injury was a result of friendly fire as fellow pass-rusher Calais Campbell accidentally kneed him in the shoulder.

Allen was having a great game, racking up two tackles. One of those tackles were a sack, putting him at 10 on the year, and the other was a tackle for loss.  With the sack, he became one of six players to have double-digit sacks as a rookie since 2010.

With the game currently at half-time, we’ll provide an update on Allen’s status when the third quarter starts.

Prospects for Jags fans to watch: Auburn DL Derrick Brown

What does Brown bring to the next level and is he a player the Jacksonville Jaguars could target in the top-10?

One of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ biggest strengths has become one of their most worrisome weaknesses during the 2019 season. The Jaguars started the season confident in a defensive line unit that was comprised of star defensive ends Yannick Ngakoue and Calais Campbell, rookie pass rusher Josh Allen, as well as Taven Bryan, Abry Jones, and Marcell Dareus up the middle at defensive tackle. A truly solid and deep unit of talented lineman.

While all but one of those players have been healthy enough to make it to this point of the regular season, the loss of the run-stuffing Dareus, to a core injury, has been evident in the team’s performances. Jacksonville hasn’t been able to stop the run and it has been a key reason as to why the Jags have been losing and losing big.

This offseason the Jaguars will be tasked with a difficult decision regarding Dareus: whether or not to release the talented but expensive big man. In 2020, Dareus carries a huge cap hit of 22.5 million. When considering that figure, the Jags will have to release Dareus (or rework a deal somehow). Regardless, he isn’t getting any younger, which means a plan for a replacement needs to be in place.

A potential heir is Auburn defensive tackle, Derrick Brown. Brown is regarded among the best players in the upcoming draft and it is easy to see why. On the season, Brown collected 11.5 tackles and four sacks, dominating the Southeastern Conference in remarkable fashion. Brown (6-foot-5, 318 pounds) is currently my second-best player in the class and would be an instant impact player on the Jaguars roster, shoring up the hole left by Dareus.

What does Brown bring to the next level and is he a player the Jaguars could target in the top-10?

Last season, I was enamored with top defensive line prospect Quinnen Williams, who ended up being drafted by the New York Jets. Williams was a game-changing defensive tackle, both a force in the pass and run game. Brown brings a similar level of disruption and nasty to his game.

Brown is one of the strongest players in the draft and it shows in his game. He is a force to be reckoned with. Against one of the best offensive lines in college football on a national stage, Derrick Brown wrecked shop on opening weekend against Oregon, a statement game for the young prospect.

In a goal-line situation, Brown made his presence known, blowing the right guard off the line into the backfield, disrupting the entire play.

Brown is a player teams must account for on every play due to his ability to easily terrorize the backfield.

Against Louisiana State, the nation’s top team, Brown again made sure Quarterback Joe Burrow was familiar with him. Brown long-armed the right guard back, walking him back into Burrow for the sack.

Simply put, Brown has become one of the draft’s most physical players and that’s exactly what you want to see out of your defensive tackle.

If all that doesn’t convince you of Brown being amongst the best in this year’s upcoming draft class, there is also the fact that the 318 pound DT is also pretty crafty as a pass-rusher. Below, in a game that just occurred a few weekends ago, Brown pulled off one of the most beautiful interior spin moves I’ve seen. A sight to behold.

Of the players that are likely to be on the board when the Jaguars are on the clock, Brown is the most dominant. Jacksonville has implemented a best available player approach the last few seasons and if they are to do it again, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Auburn’s big, sexy No. 5 be the selection. He would become an immediate starter and an immediate difference-maker.

For a team looking for its identity, Brown could be the player to return Jacksonville’s defense to being one of the most feared in the league. To me, he could have a John Henderson/ Marcus Stoud type impact, which is what’s been missing in Duval.

4 Jaguars to watch on defense vs. Chargers

The Jags will need their defense to step up if they are to defeat the Chargers Sunday, making Yannick Ngakoue a key player to watch.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ chances to make the playoffs are slim, but they at least want to go out with a bang this month. They will have a chance to end their four-game losing streak against the Los Angeles Chargers this Sunday but will need some help from their defense, which has looked like a shell of themselves as of late.

Here are four players who the Jags will need to step up come Sunday if they are to defeat the Chargers, who are also looking to end a losing streak of their own:

LB Donald Payne

Donald Payne played lights out while starting in Myles Jack’s place Week 13 against the Tampa Bay Bucs. He was able to accumulate 13 total tackles and a sack and will now be the starter at middle linebacker for the remainder of the season because Jack was placed on injured reserve this week.

With Jack having a terrible showing in the middle this year, it’s unknown if he’ll play there next year, especially with the possibility of the coaching staff being let go. That said, Payne can make his case to start in the middle with a strong day against the Chargers and beyond.

Josh Allen proving to be a bright spot despite Jags’ struggles

Jaguars first round pick Josh Allen continues to make his case for Defensive Rookie of the Year and once again balled out Week 13.

In the midst of a rough game against the Tampa Bay Bucs Sunday, the Jacksonville Jaguars at least had a few players who stood out and Josh Allen was amongst them. The rookie has terrorized opposing quarterbacks all season and that once again was the case for Jameis Winston as Allen had a sack on the day in addition to accumulating four tackles.

In total, Allen now has nine sacks on the season which is good for the franchise’s record for rookies. Yannick Ngakoue held the previous record of eight, until Allen tied him this month and eventually surpassed him. His performance on the field further proves that the Jags were lucky he fell to them this April and made the right decision to draft him.

Throughout the process of his rookie success, the young pass rusher seemingly has become a fan favorite and a popular name as he was second at his position in Pro Bowl votes for the AFC. That popularity should only increase the more he closes in on Jevon Kearse’s rookie sack record of 14.5 sacks.

Most fans feel that the Jags immediate future may not be too bright when looking at the spiraling path the team is taking, but the next regime at least will have arguably the best pass rusher from the 2019 class (and maybe Ngakoue) getting after the quarterback. That said, fans who are disappointed in the team will at least have a reason to watch the remaining games as Allen has shown promise that is undeniable at the moment.

Winners and Losers from Bucs vs. Jaguars

There weren’t many positives to take from the Jags’ loss to the Bucs, but they did have some reserves step up in a big way Sunday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars once again came away from game day with another one in the losers column after falling to the Tampa Bay Bucs in Week 13. The Bucs got off to a fast start and the Jaguars never seemed to get going. The Jags were shut out in the first half and it prompted Doug Marrone to make the switch from Nick Foles to Gardner Minshew II.

In another losing effort that ended with a final score of 28-11 here are the winners and losers from Jacksonville’s Week 13 game against their in-state rivals.

Winners

In a game like this, it is hard to identify many “winners,” but a few players stuck out to me.

Pass rusher Josh Allen

Josh Allen continued his sensational rookie campaign against the Bucs. The Kentucky alum registered two quarterback hits, and a sack in yet another solid performance. While he had a great day no doubt, Allen is a winner today for breaking the Jaguars’ rookie sack record with his ninth sack on the season.

Allen was recently second in Pro Bowl voting for AFC defensive ends and his production has been a big reason as to why. With four games still left to be played, Allen will only continue to bolster his lead on the Jaguars record and may even near Javon Kearse’s NFL rookie record of 14.5. He has been one of the Jags’ best and most consistent players, which is a truly remarkable and exciting feat for the young Jaguar.

The Jaguars’ reserve defenders stepped up

Continuing on the defense, both linebacker Donald Payne and safety Andrew Wingard had to be called on to start for Myles Jack and Ronnie Harrison, and neither disappointed. Payne and Wingard were first and second, respectively, as far as tackles go with 13 and seven tackles on the day. Payne also nearly had a pick while Wingard caused a fumble on Jameis Winston which was recovered by the Jags.

If anything, the Jags left the game confident in the two reserves if they have to be called upon again and should look to continue playing both players with the postseason out of reach. Fans should also be mindful of both players in the future because the Jags could be rebuilding, and often times depth is an issue for a team that has reset. If Wingard and Payne continue to make progress, however, the Jags’ depth might be better than expected in the future.

Losers

QB Nick Foles

Nick Foles didn’t have a good day against the Bucs — and he has yet to have one at all since returning. In fact, it’s looking like the Jags may be losing money after signing Foles to an $88 million contract in March.

Sunday, Foles arguably had his worst day aside from his Chiefs debut. Foles couldn’t seem to get anything going and was the reason for three first half turnovers and no points being put on the board. As a result, Marrone decided the offense needed a ‘spark’ and made the change at quarterback.

Minshew instantly gave the offense new life, accumulating their only touchdown drive of the game. Going forward, it seems he’ll be the guy the team might roll with. That would certainly mark a bad season for the former Super Bowl MVP.

The Run Game

Early in the year, Leonard Fournette was on a tear, leading the AFC in rushing yards at the mid-season mark. However, the team has moved away from their strong run game as of late in favor of a more pass-heavy attack. Fournette has become a reliable receiver, but the run game has suffered dearly.

With the return of Minshew under center, the team may return to a more run-based offense, but ultimately, time will tell. Hopefully, the offensive line can open up some more holes for Fournette as the young tailback ran for just 38 yards on 14 carries Week 13. If they can, the Jags would make things much more interesting heading into the last stretch.

3 Jaguars to watch on defense vs. Bucs

The Jags defense will need to have a solid day Sunday against the Bucs passing attack, which could lead to Josh Allen getting more snaps.

The Jacksonville Jaguars went winless in November and will look to get away from that in December. First up on their schedule for the upcoming month are their in-state rivals in the Tampa Bay Bucs, who are coming off a solid win against the Atlanta Falcons.

Here are three Jaguars to watch on the defensive side of the ball, as the Jags try to cool down a hot Bucs offense:

CB Tre Herndon

The Jags’ passing defense will be very important in Sunday’s game. Bruce Arians has his group clicking through the air as they rank fourth in passing yards (288.1 YPG), fourth in total yards (386.4 YPG) and third in points scored (28.4 PPG).

A big part of their success is due to their dynamic duo at the receiver position in Chris Godwin and Mike Evans, who have nine and seven touchdowns on the season, respectively. Both receivers will also roll into Sunday’s game with over 1,000 yards receiving and will be matched up against A.J. Bouye and Tre Herndon.

With Arians and former Jags quarterback turned coordinator Byron Leftwich making the game-plan, the Cards will test Herndon more than Bouye, and he must answer the call as he did against the New York Jets when he had two picks. However, if he doesn’t it could be a long day for the Jags on defense.
