San Francisco 49ers continue to find woes, on and off the field

What more can happen to the San Francisco 49ers?

The best thing about Week 2 for the San Francisco 49ers is they got to play the New York Jets, the closest thing to a bye in the 2020 NFL.

The team saw star defensive lineman Nick Bosa lost for the season with an ACL injury. Solomon Thomas, another D-lineman, went out, RB Raheem Mostert left the victory as did QB Jimmy Graoppolo.

And off the field, it wasn’t any better.

First, the team’s flight to New Jersey from the Bay Area on Friday night after airport personnel crashed into the team plane causing a six-hour delay. It was the only Jet that gave the Niners an issue all weekend.

MRI results were delayed because the machine truck broke down. And, finally,

The team is staying in West Virginia this week rather than flying to the Bay Area and returning a few days later when it faces the New York Giants Sunday at MetLife.

The Bills were handling the New York Jets Sunday in their home opener. That said, Allen is going to have to be on target when free scores are available or else Buffalo could find itself in trouble when the opponent isn’t as meek as Gang Green.

Former NFL WR Josh Bellamy charged in massive COVID-19 relief scam

Former Bear and Jet WR Josh Bellamy has been charged in a massive fraud scheme involving COVID-19 relief.

Josh Bellamy, a wide receiver who was with four teams from 2012-19 and was released by the New York Jets Tuesday, was one of 50 people across 16 states charged Thursday with attempting to defraud the government out of up to $175 million in COVID-19 relief money.

Bellamy’s alleged role in the scheme saw the former Chicago Bear and Jet obtain a loan worth more than $1.24 million from the Paycheck Protection Program for a company called Drip Entertainment LLC (a Florida company). The loans were designed to help small businesses recover from the coronavirus pandemic for specific purposes.

Bellamy, who also spent time early in his career with Kansas City and Washington, is alleged in the complaint to have deposited the money into his personal bank account, which at the time had $2.51. In a three-month span this spring and summer, the complaint alleges Bellamy withdrew more than $302,000, spending $104,000 on luxury goods and jewelry and another $62,774 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Florida.

Bellamy was charged in a federal criminal complaint with fraud, bank fraud, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud.

Per the Tampa Bay Tribune:

Bellamy also was involved in the preparation of at least 90 fraudulent applications for friends and family, the complaint says. Those loans were worth as much as $24 million; at least $17.4 million worth were approved. Ten other co-conspirators were charged in the alleged scheme.

According to the complaint, an undercover agent posing as a potential loan partner, asked Bellamy how many employees he had. “I got as many employees as I want,” the complaint quotes Bellamy.

Bellamy, 31, had 78 catches for 999 yards and five touchdowns in his career. All but two of the receptions came as a Bear. He was born in St. Petersburg, Fl, and played college ball at Louisville.

 

Who is the oldest practice squad player in NFL history?

Josh McCown will sit at home, make $12,000 a week as a practice squad player for the Eagles.

Josh McCown has been around a long time. And the journeyman can add another line to his resume: practice squad player.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed the veteran, 41-year-old QB to their practice squad Sunday.

McCown was an assistant coach with a high school team while on the Eagles last season. He hopes to eventually go into coaching … if he retires at any point.

Stunning shot shows how much bigger Jets’ Mekhi Becton is than Jamison Crowder

The Jets posted a photo to social media of Mekhi Becton and Jamison Crowder. Check out why it has gone viral.

Jamison Crowder is 5-foot-9, 174 pounds. The New York Jets’ wide receiver was next to first-round pick Mekhi Becton on the sidelines Tuesday.

Talk about a size difference. Becton is 6-feet-7 and 370 pounds and the image next to Crowder, a wide receiver, is nothing short of astounding.

It looks like Becton, who played college ball at Louisville, is standing next to someone on a Pop Warner team, not an NFL wideout.

“I was definitely insecure growing up,” Becton told ESPN last week. “I was always getting talked about because I’m the bigger kid, bigger than normal. It is what it is. I’m glad I embrace it now.”

Former Giants kicker breaks news on Big Blue trying out kicker

The New York Giants are bringing in another veteran kicker in hopes of replacing Aldrick Rosas.

It’s tough to break news in this social media world. And it gets more difficult when athletes start to steal exclusives from reporters. Former New York Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes dropped some info on the team’s kicking plans Sunday.

The Giants are looking for kicking help after they cut Aldrick Rosas, who ran into trouble with the law this postseason.

Big Blue signed Chandler Cantanzaro, who retired last year after a sorry sting with the New York Jets in preseason.

Gano was the kicker for Carolina from 2012-18. He missed last season due to a leg injury and was cut at the end of July. The 33-year-old Gano was still under contract for an additional two years. He has hit 82.1% of his field-goal attempts, including a rousing 96.7% in 2017.

Tynes, in case you were wondering, kicked for the Giants from 2007-12.

Jamal Adams takes his shot at Jets’ DC Gregg Williams

Jamal Adams of the Seahawks got his shots in at Jets’ DC Gregg Williams

The New York Jets don’t play at Seattle until Week 14. However, the head-to-head games continue between Seahawks DB Jamal Adams and Gang Green DC Gregg Williams.

Williams suggested Adams “might get bored” in Seattle’s scheme.

Took a couple days, but Adams, who was traded to Seattle in the offseason after blasting Jets’ brass, shot back on Twitter Saturday.

Circle the date: Dec. 13 in the Northwest.

New York Giants cut Aldrick Rosas, signing Chandler Cantanzaro

The New York Giants are cutting kicker Aldrick Rosas, and signing former Jet Chandler Cantanzaro.

Aldrick Rosas has gone from kicking off for the New York Giants to being kicked off Big Blue following his arrest for an alleged hit-and-run in June.

Rosas had received a second-round tender from the team but that was before his arrest in California.

Rosas was driving a black Chevrolet SUV when a T-bone collision occurred. Witnesses saw Rosas driving erratically over the double yellow lines and at a speed estimated to be 100 mph when he ran a red light and hit a Ford pickup truck.

Rosas, 25, attempted to drive away from the scene of the crash before his vehicle became disabled. He exited and fled the scene on foot without shoes, according to the police report.

To replace the former Pro Bowler, New York is signing former Jets kicker Chandler Catanzaro, according to ESPN, after cutting Rosas following his arrest for an alleged hit-and-run in June.

Catanzaro retired after missing two extra points in the preseason opener against the Giants in 2019. In 2017, Catanzaro made 25-of-30 field-goal attempts. He spent 2018 with the Panthers and Buccaneers before being brought back to the Jets to replace departed Pro Bowler Jason Myers. Catanzaro spent his first three NFL seasons with the Cardinals.
