Jets vs. Bengals inactives: Darryl Roberts returns, Chuma Edoga sits out

Jets vs. Bengals inactives report for Week 13.

The Jets welcome back some depth at cornerback on Sunday, as Darryl Roberts is returning to the field following a three-game absence due to a calf injury.

While Roberts was injured, Arthur Maulet and Bless Austin stepped up as a solid cornerback duo, meaning Roberts is unlikely to assume a starting spot upon his return. Regardless, the veteran will have the chance to make some plays whenever defensive coordinator Gregg Williams deems it necessary to put him on the field.

As one injured Jet returns, another is forced to sit out. Chuma Edoga will miss Sunday’s game due to a knee injury suffered against the Raiders last weekend.

Prior to the injury, Edoga had turned the corner at right tackle after a rough start to his career. Brandon Shell will assume his spot in the starting lineup until he can return.

As for the Bengals, they’re still without star wideout A.J. Green. Quarterback Ryan Finley is active despite his benching and will serve as Andy Dalton’s backup in Week 13.

Jets vs. Bengals: Game info, where to watch, notes

Here’s everything you need to know for the Jets’ matchup with the Bengals.

The Jets will look to extend their winning streak to four games when they take on Cincinnati on Sunday.

New York is playing its best football of the season right now, putting up exactly 34 points in each of the last three games. Meanwhile, the defense is continuing what it has done all season long — being the No. 1 team against the run.

For this game, the Jets are going to need a balanced attack offensively. Cincinnati is bad against both the run and the pass, but especially the run. The Bengals are dead last in run defense, allowing 166.3 yards per game. That suits Le’Veon Bell, who has yet to have a breakout game, as well as the other running backs. Sam Darnold also needs to take advantage of the Bengals’ weak secondary.

Defensively, the Jets have to continue to stop the run and put Andy Dalton in long yardage situations. This is Dalton’s first game back since being benched a few weeks ago, so getting him to throw in tough situations will make him uncomfortable.

As for the Bengals, they are 0-11 on the season and it would be typical if their first win came against the Jets. They are clearly looking ahead to 2020, so the Jets have to make sure they don’t stoop down to the competition.

Jets-Bengals special teams battle among things to know in Week 13

Special teams and field position could play a huge role in the Jets’ Week 13 game against the Bengals.

The Jets and Bengals are heading in opposite directions. With every win, the Jets move closer to a record that takes them out of running for the best draft prospects but closer to competency in the AFC. The Bengals, though, look destined for the top pick in April and an unknown future in 2020.

The Week 13 matchup, then, is a crossroads for the two teams. The Jets can prove their win streak isn’t a fluke – despite it coming against the 0-11 Bengals – while the Bengals can prove how dedicated they are – or not, if they win – to tanking. Whichever outcome occurs won’t affect the AFC playoff picture in any real way, but it could play a huge role in the futures of the Jets and Bengals.

Here are four things to know for the Week 13 matchup.

Battle of special teams

Special teams and field position can be critical components to a football game and Week 13 pits two teams with great units against each other. The Bengals rank first in Football Outsiders’ special teams DVOA, while the Jets rank third.

Once again, Brant Boyer turned the Jets into one of the better special teams units in the league, and the Jets rank first in kick coverage DVOA. But the Bengals, meanwhile, are first in kick return DVOA and average 28.9 yards per kickoff return – second in the league. On punts, the Jets average the second-most yards per return (10.1) while the Bengals allow the fifth-fewest yards per return (5.3). Special teams may seem boring, but it could very easily swing this game one direction or another.

Former Jets WR Terrelle Pryor arrested after being stabbed in Pittsburgh

Former Jets wide receiver Terrelle Pryor has been charged with simple assault for his role in an incident that left him hospitalized.

Saturday was a chaotic one for former Jets wide receiver Terrelle Pryor.

After sustaining stab wounds to his chest and shoulder, Pryor was charged with simple assault for his role in an incident that occurred in his apartment at 4:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. According to the Allegheny County prosecutors office and police, 24-year-old Shalaya Briston was charged with attempted homicide and aggravated assault for stabbing Pryor twice. Police said that Pryor and Briston were “mutual combatants” in the incident.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Pryor and Briston went out to dinner for drinks before the couple started arguing. Pryor went home, while Briston and her friends remained out. When Briston and her friends returned to Pryor’s apartment, he was there waiting for them.

Pryor allegedly knocked one of Briston’s friends to the ground before he started fighting with her. The argument spilled into Pryor’s kitchen, where he was allegedly stabbed by Briston. Briston and her friends then drove Pryor to the hospital for treatment. According to WPXI’s Amy Hudak, police recovered a semi-automatic pistol in the passenger seat of Pryor’s car. Police also reportedly recovered a Glock pistol with a flashlight from the vehicle.

Pryor underwent surgery to repair his wounds and is expected to make a full recovery.

Pryor, 30, spent part of 2018 with the Jets before being released due to injury. In six games with New York, Pryor caught 14 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns. He has also spent time with the Buffalo Bills, Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns and Oakland Raiders. Pryor’s best season came with the Browns in 2016 when he caught 77 passes for 1,007 yards and four touchdowns.

Pryor most recently signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars before being released in September following a hamstring injury.

Pressuring Andy Dalton among keys to Jets defense vs. Bengals

The Jets’ pass rush needs to continue playing well to keep the Bengals at bay.

Gregg Williams’ defense continues to impress and now they’ll have another chance to show off against the 0-11 Bengals and one of the worst scoring offenses in the league. Cincinnati ranks 31st in points with 14.3 and the Jets should feast on a team that also ranks top-five in giveaways (22) and sacks allowed (40).

However, the Jets can’t overlook the lowly Bengals. Remember the last time the Jets faced a winless football team? They gave up 26 points and lost an embarrassing game against the Dolphins. The Bengals are objectively worse offensively than the Dolphins, but they’re starting a well-rested veteran quarterback in Andy Dalton and feature a dual-threat running back in Joe Mixon.

Here are four keys to the Jets defense against the Bengals.

Pressure Andy Dalton

The Bengals offense might see a slight rejuvenation with Andy Dalton back under center, so the Jets should pressure him early in order to take away the passing threat. Despite the Bengals’ winless record, Dalton actually ranks seventh in the NFL with 281.5 passing yards per game and the Bengals have scored 17 or more points in six of his eight starts this season. The Bengals’ line is still a sieve, and the Jets should have no trouble getting to Dalton – especially with the pass rush playing as well as it has the past few weeks.

Featuring Le’Veon Bell among Jets’ keys to offense vs. Bengals

Jets running back Le’Veon Bell should be able to run rampant against the Bengals defense in Week 13.

The Jets offense should continue to roll in Week 13 as New York takes on the winless Bengals in Cinncinati. Sam Darnold just put up 27 points in a blowout win over the Raiders a week ago, and the young quarterback has thrown for 838 yards and seven touchdowns with only one turnover during the Jets’ three-game winning streak.

There isn’t a lot to be worried about against the Bengals defense but that doesn’t mean the Jets can sleepwalk through this game. Remember Week 9 in Miami? The Jets looked atrocious against the Dolphins and delivered them their first win of the season. Similarly to how they played in the previous three weeks, Adam Gase and the Jets should pour it on with their offense and light up one of the worst defenses in the league.

Here are four keys to the Jets offense against the Bengals.

Jets injury report: Sam Darnold to practice fully

Sam Darnold was placed on Wednesday’s injury report with a knee issue, but he’s expected to practice fully on Turkey Day.

Sam Darnold was placed on Wednesday’s injury report with a knee issue, but he’s expected to practice fully on Turkey Day.

That’s obviously something Gang Green should be thankful for. The same goes for Brandon Copeland, who is also back to practicing fully after being limited Wednesday with hip and thumb injuries.

In other injury news, Darryl Roberts (calf) and Kelvin Beachum (ankles) will be limited, while Chuma Edoga (knee) won’t practice. It would be a surprise if Edgoa played this weekend against the Bengals, while Roberts could find himself on the sideline regardless of health due to the recent strong play of Arthur Maulet and Bless Austin at cornerback.

Jets in danger of falling out of top 10 in 2020 NFL draft

the Jets are in danger of falling out of the top 10 in the 2020 NFL draft after picking up three straight wins.

While it’s great to see that the Jets are stringing together a few wins, it’s also hurting their position in the 2020 NFL draft.

According to Tankathon, the 4-7 Jets currently own the tenth pick in the 2020 draft. The Jets are one of four teams who are 4-7, but only one of them is ahead of them and that’s the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars are ahead of the Jets because they beat the Jets earlier this season.

The Jets have plenty of holes to fill, including offensive line, wide receiver and cornerback. The draft is where you tend to fix these holes. So while the winning is nice, more likely than not they’re not going to make the playoffs and their primary focus will be on the draft.

Christopher Johnson has already said that Adam Gase will be back next season, so losing won’t put his job in jeopardy. Meanwhile, Joe Douglas was just brought in this year, so he’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

Obviously, the players on the field want to win, so they aren’t going to tank just for a draft pick. The next couple of the games should work in the Jets’ favor too, which again will hurt their draft stock.

But this team needs some sort of confidence heading into 2020. Ending the season on a sour note won’t be good for next season. More likely than not the Jets won’t fall too far down in the draft even with a couple of more wins.

USA Today Power Rankings: Jets move up 8 spots after huge win over Raiders

The Jets are now No. 19 in the latest USA Today Power Rankings after their big win over the Raiders.

After the Jets’ best win of the season against the Raiders, USA Today took notice and moved the Jets way up in its latest power rankings.

New York moved up eight spots from No. 27 to No. 19 after defeating the Raiders, 34-3. It was by far the biggest jump of the week for any NFL team. Before the Raiders game, the Jets beat the Giants and Redskins, which were okay wins against bad teams, but the Raiders win is a lot more respectable. USA Today even put the Jets ahead of the Raiders despite Oakland’s 6-5 record.

The Jets will have another opportunity to move up next week when they take on the 0-11 Bengals. Cincinnati is by far the worst team in the league, but the Bengals have been competitive in some games this season. The Jets cannot afford to overlook this team like they have in years past with other bad teams.

As for the rest of the AFC East, the Patriots stayed put at No. 2, while the Bills moved up three spots to No. 12. The Dolphins also didn’t move up or down as they sit at No. 29.

The Ravens are No. 1 followed by the Patriots, 49ers, Saints and Seahawks.

Oddsmakers flip the script by choosing Jets as favorites over Bengals

After a dominating performance against the Raiders on Sunday, odds makers are willing to roll with Gang Green in Week 13.

New York has won three straight to improve to 4-7 on the season. After a dominating performance against the Raiders on Sunday, oddsmakers are now willing to roll with Gang Green in Week 13.

The Jets will travel to Cincinnati this week as 3.5-point favorites, per BetMGM. Despite a 34-3 win last week, oddsmakers are only favoring New York by a narrow margin against an 0-11 Bengals team.

Still, the Jets are -186 in the money line, -115 against the spread and the greater odds sit with the over, set at 39.5 total points.

The Bengals, as 3.5-point underdogs, sit at +155 in the money line, -106 against the spread and hold the advantage of playing at home on Sunday.

The last time these two teams met was in September 2016, when the Jets lost on favorable territory, 23-22. However, New York has gotten the better of the Bengals all-time. The series currently sits at 17-9-0 by way of gang Green.

Still, the Jets have dropped their last two meetings with Cincinnati. They’ll take the field at 1 p.m. on Sunday with hopes of flipping the script yet again.
