49ers announce DL Charles Omenihu trade along with several roster moves

The #49ers announced 6 other roster moves when they made the trade for DL Charles Omenihu official.

The 49ers on Tuesday officially announced the acquisition of defensive lineman Charles Omenihu along with a bevy of other roster moves as they set themselves to make additions with their injury situation improving.

Omenihu was acquired from the Houston Texans in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2023. In 35 games since joining the Texans in 2019 as a fifth-round pick from the University of Texas, Omenihu has 80 pressures and 7.0 sacks per Pro Football Reference. His 16 pressures this season would rank him third on the 49ers behind Nick Bosa and Arik Armstead.

He spent most of his time in Houston playing on the edge, but at 6-5,  280 pounds he could play a role like Arik Armstead where he bounces around the defensive line based on the situation.

San Francisco announced six other roster moves when they made the trade official. While none of the moves in a vacuum will directly impact the team, they’re a sign that the club’s health is improving at a crucial point in their season. These are the other moves and what they mean for the 49ers:

Colts vs. Jets: Updated injury report in Week 9

Here is the updated injury report for the Colts and Jets in Week 9.

The Indianapolis Colts (3-5) and New York Jets (2-5) released their updated injury reports on Tuesday ahead of the Week 9 matchup at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Colts ran another jog-through on Tuesday so the statuses listed are only estimates had they practiced. There was only one change on the injury report for the Colts on Tuesday.

Here’s the updated injury report for the Colts in Week 9:

*DNP = Did Not Participate — LP = Limited Participant — FP = Full Participant*

Player Injury Mon. (11/1) Tue. (11/2) Wed. (11/3) Status
WR T.Y. Hilton Concussion DNP DNP
CB BoPete Keyes Hamstring DNP DNP

Notes

  • Only LG Quenton Nelson had his status changed. Even though he was an estimated DNP on Tuesday, he still has a shot to play if he practices in a limited capacity on Wednesday before the final injury report comes out.
  • We already know WR T.Y. Hilton won’t clear the concussion protocol in time for the game and that it’s unlikely S Khari Willis will be healthy enough to turn around on a short week.

Here’s a look at the updated injury report for the Jets in Week 9:

*DNP = Did Not Participate — LP = Limited Participant — FP = Full Participant*

Player Injury Mon. (11/1) Tue. (11/2) Wed. (11/3) Status

Report: Broncos placing Bryce Callahan on injured reserve

Broncos are expected to place CB Bryce Callahan (knee) on injured reserve. 9News reports he will miss “significant time.”

The Denver Broncos will place cornerback Bryce Callahan (knee) on injured reserve, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Callahan will be eligible to return from IR after three weeks, but he’s expected to miss “significant time,” according to Klis. Just how much time is “significant” remains to be seen.

Callahan suffered what appeared to be gruesome knee injury during Sunday’s 17-10 win over the Washington Football Team. Before that, he totaled 21 tackles, four pass breakups and one sack in Denver’s first eight games of the season.

The good news for the Broncos is cornerbacks Michael Ojemudia (IR) and Essang Bassey (PUP list) are expected to return to the 53-man roster soon, potentially as early as this week.

Pat Surtain and Ronald Darby are expected to continue starting on the outside for Denver. Ojemudia and Bassey will presumably be the candidates to replace Callahan in the slot.

Bassey spent time as a slot cornerback for the Broncos last season.

Lions activate LT Taylor Decker and DE Kevin Strong from injured reserve

The Lions have activated LT Taylor Decker and DE Kevin Strong from injured reserve

It wasn’t the anticipated news release at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, the NFL’s trade deadline, but the Detroit Lions did make a couple of roster moves announced at that witching hour. The Lions have activated left tackle Taylor Decker and defensive end Kevin Strong from the injured reserve list.

Both Decker and Strong were designated to return from IR three weeks ago. Decker has missed the first eight games with a finger injury suffered in the final practice before the season opener. Strong has been sidelined with a concussion and then a thigh injury. Both needed to be activated before the 21-day mark or else they would have reverted to IR for the rest of the season.

Decker suffered a setback after his initial practice sessions with the team upon being designated for return, and Lions head coach Dan Campbell indicated there was potential that the veteran LT could be lost for the season. He did not participate in any practices leading into the Week 8 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. But the Lions have seen enough to bring back the longest-tenured member of the team for the final nine games.

The Lions waived rookie OL Tommy Kraemer to create one roster spot. They previously had another spot open after placing OL Logan Stenberg on IR last week.

Titans place Derrick Henry on IR, activate Daniel Munyer

The Titans made a pair of roster moves on Monday, one of which included placing Derrick Henry on IR.

The Tennessee Titans made a pair of roster moves on Monday, one of which included placing superstar running back Derrick Henry on Injured Reserve.

Titans head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed surgery for Henry during his earlier in the day, saying it would take place on Tuesday morning.

Timelines for Henry’s return have varied, but the best one we’ve seen comes from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who says The King could be out 6 to 10 weeks, with eight weeks being the most realistic.

Not great, but better than him being done for the season. If he comes back after eight weeks, that would place his return sometime around Week 16, right before the playoffs.

Thankfully, the Titans have a comfortable lead in the AFC South and should be able to weather the storm until Henry returns.

The other move Tennessee made on Monday was the activation of backup center Daniel Munyer off IR. He’s now back on the 53-man roster.

How are Chase Roullier and Ereck Flowers after injuries in Washington’s Week 8 loss?

What are the latest updates on Ereck Flowers and Chase Roullier?

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbykgy681k112p8 player_id=none image=https://washingtonfootballwire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

No position group on Washington’s roster has been hit harder with injuries than the offensive line. All-Pro right guard Brandon Scherff has missed the last four games with a knee injury, while rookie right tackle Sam Cosmi has missed three games with an ankle injury.

In addition, Cosmi’s replacement, Cornelius Lucas, missed Sunday’s game with an illness.

Fortunately for Washington, dependable center Chase Roullier along with left tackle Charles Leno and left guard Ereck Flowers remained in the lineup for the WFT’s Week 8 game at Denver.

Sadly, it didn’t take long for the injury bug to hit Washington’s offensive line again as Roullier went down in the second quarter and was carted off the field with a leg injury. Roullier has played in 67 games, making 61 starts since being drafted in 2017. He is quietly one of the NFL’s better centers.

Now, it appears his season may be over.

Later in the game, Flowers went down with a leg injury. There was no prognosis on Flowers after the game.

In his Monday press conference, head coach Ron Rivera told the media he didn’t have an update at the time of his presser.

However, later in the day, Ben Standig of The Athletic reported that there appears to be good news surrounding Flowers. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for Roullier.

Hopefully, for Roullier, there isn’t more damage. However, he is likely done for the season, dealing Washington another tough blow.

Flowers has been outstanding in his return to Washington in 2021. After a breakout season for the WFT in 2019 in his first season at guard, Flowers signed a three-year deal with the Dolphins. He played one season in Miami, before the Dolphins traded him back to Washington just before the 2021 NFL draft.

The bye week is coming at a perfect time for Washington. The hope is Flowers, Scherff, Cosmi and Lucas can all return for the Week 10 game against the Buccaneers. Washington also hopes to get back wide receiver Curtis Samuel and tight end Logan Thomas.

Bengals get good update after Jackson Carman injury scare

Good news on the injury front for the Bengals.

[mm-video type=video id=01fk180eypeyq2fw7jbg playlist_id=01eqbw0bft20de1r4d player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fk180eypeyq2fw7jbg/01fk180eypeyq2fw7jbg-42336ce12defd7b7ebc558b112017718.jpg]

The Cincinnati Bengals had an injury scare over the weekend during the loss to the New York Jets as rookie guard Jackson Carman had a cart come out after an apparent back injury.

Carman eventually didn’t need the cart to leave the field itself, but it was a scary moment for the player and team.

Fast forward to now though, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor has classified the injury as “Day to day. Not serious,” according to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic.

That’s a big sigh of relief for the Bengals, as it means Carman might be able to play in Week 9 against the Cleveland Browns. He’s been starting at right guard when available and has been on the upswing after some rookie struggles. He’s a key part of the future and if he has to miss time, it’s sixth-rounder Trey Hill who would take snaps with veteran Xavier Su’a-Filo still on injured reserve.

Bills’ Jon Feliciano week-to-week with calf injury

#Bills’ Jon Feliciano week-to-week with calf injury:

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbw1j59gmjw5gdj player_id=none image=https://billswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Buffalo Bills are going to be without offensive lineman Jon Feliciano for a bit.

According the Bills head coach Sean McDermott, Feliciano has a calf strain. The coach announced that injury via video conference on Monday and called Feliciano “week-to-week.”

Bare minimum, it sounds like Feliciano will miss Buffalo’s upcoming game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road in Week 8. After that, the Bills stay out of town against the New York Jets in their ensuing game.

Feliciano was hurt late in his team’s 26-11 win against the Miami Dolphins (1-7) on Sunday.

Without him, it’s expected that Ike Boettger would fill in for the Bills (5-2). He did so just last week when Spencer Brown was injured.

It’s unclear if Brown will be able to return next week just yet as well. McDermott did not provide an update on the rookie.

If both are out, the expected next man up would be Cody Ford, who entered the game late for Feliciano against Miami when Boettger was already out there.

Bills Wire will provide updates throughout the week as they become available.

Chiefs DL Chris Jones reveals he’s playing with torn wrist ligaments

After the Week 8 win over the #Giants, #Chiefs DL Chris Jones revealed he tore wrist ligaments earlier this season and has been playing through it.

Kansas City Chiefs defensive linemen Chris Jones revealed after the Week 8 win over the New York Giants that he has been battling through a significant wrist injury this season, one that will potentially require surgery during the offseason.

Jones first popped up on the injury report after the team’s Week 2 game against the Baltimore Ravens. He was limited in practice all week ahead of the Week 3 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, but he ultimately chose to play through the injury.

“Well, I ended up tearing some ligaments in my wrist and I tried to play through it,” Jones told reporters after the game. “I don’t make no excuses for myself. I tried to play through it and realized that I couldn’t play to my full potential while playing through it. I thought it was best to just take a couple of weeks off and let it heal.”

Torn and partially torn wrist ligaments can heal in 2-10 weeks, but the rough nature of the NFL game means that Jones is at risk of reinjury on any given down. He sat out in Week 5 and Week 6, but was back in action against the Titans in Week 7 and right back at it again in Week 8 after missing the first two days of practice.

“Thankfully, the team agreed,” Jones continued. “We came to an agreement and I feel a lot better now. I’m able to do some things that I wasn’t able to do when it initially happened and I feel good. I feel great to be back on the field with my brothers.”

Jones says he’s feeling good, or at least better than he did after the Week 3 game against the Chargers. He’ll likely need maintenance days for the remainder of the season to ensure that his wrist is healing and not worsening. Asked whether he was “100 percent” in his return to the field, Jones was honest with reporters about the outlook for the season.

“I wouldn’t say 100 percent,” Jones said. “I don’t think I’ll be 100 percent this season. It’s a long brutal season. Every game you get a knick or a knack. So, I’m good enough to play to the best of my ability and any time I’m able to do that I can be a problem.”

In this game, he showed just the type of problem he can be. Jones and Frank Clark claimed the Week 8 victory with back-to-back sacks of Giants QB Daniel Jones, something that at one point was a signature for this defense. A reporter asked, “Is sack nation back?”

Jones’ response felt very appropriate.

“I don’t think we ever left,” Jones said. “Like I was telling my teammates, it’s a marathon. It’s a long season you know, we’ve still got another half-season to go. We can be the best half-season you guys have ever seen. . .”

49ers optimistic DE Dee Ford, LB Azeez Al-Shaair will return vs. Cardinals

The #49ers had two players out of Sunday’s game because of concussions, but both are expected back Sunday vs. Arizona.

[mm-video type=video id=01fkgqrfw5kppv3kjn60 playlist_id=01eqbxacb60r3mr0ac player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fkgqrfw5kppv3kjn60/01fkgqrfw5kppv3kjn60-3ce9b72c4f388ca831ce9b0855b699e3.jpg]

The 49ers defense was shorthanded in Chicago in part because of a pair of key players sitting in concussion protocol. Defensive end Dee Ford and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair both missed Sunday’s game, but head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday said he doesn’t anticipate either player missing a second game.

San Francisco didn’t rule either player out in Friday’s injury report, listing both as ‘doubtful’ before downgrading them to ‘out’ Saturday.

“I am optimistic about them next week,” Shanahan told reporters on a conference call. “They were close enough that we took it all the way until Saturday. But usually when it’s not looking good on Friday, that’s why we put them down as doubtful. We held out hope that’s why he took them with us out, but still a long shot this week. Much better today and hopefully that will be cleared by Wednesday.”

Ford is second on the 49ers with 3.0 sacks this season, but they still managed to sack Bears QB Justin Fields four times without him. Defensive end Samson Ebukam saw additional work with Ford out and took advantage with his best game as a 49er and his first sack of the year.

Al-Shaair has seen an increased role since LB Dre Greenlaw went on injured reserve with a groin injury. The former undrafted free agent has acquitted himself well with more playing time. Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles got the start in his place Sunday and played well with a couple tackles and a QB pressure.

The 49ers will need as many healthy defenders as possible to pull off an upset over the Arizona Cardinals, so Ford and Al-Shaair’s returns would be welcome for San Francisco.
