Purdue vs Wisconsin Game Preview

Why Purdue Will Win

This Wisconsin thing just can’t get going.

Just when it seemed like it turned a corner with a fresh start under interim-likely-new head coach Jim Leonhard after a blowout win over Northwestern, it couldn’t close in East Lansing.

The Badger offense can’t run like it’s supposed to and the passing game isn’t good enough to overcome it. The D is usually able to pick up the slack, and it’s solid against the run, but it’s not getting the job done. The secondary got picked apart by Michigan State’s midrange throws the 34-28 overtime loss.

Purdue knows how to crank up midrange throws with everything kicking in over the last few weeks. But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Wisconsin, in general, has more problems when teams push the pass down the field, but that’s not really Purdue.

It’s not awful at allowing the short throws and coming up with the big pop, but the D isn’t the issue.

Is this when the offense rises up and blasts away? It needs Graham Mertz and the passing attack to get creative and wing it around like they did in the win over Northwestern, but mostly this has to be an enough-is-enough moment for the Badger ground game.

If there’s one of those days in this program when the offense runs for over 300 yards and holds the ball for over 40 minutes, now is the time to unleash it.

Wisconsin has a hex on Purdue winning 15 straight since a loss in 2003. The defense knows how to deal with this attack, the offense usually pounds away, and …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Purdue’s run defense has been fantastic.

It stuffed Minnesota – granted, the Gophers were banged up in the backfield – and is allowing just 100 yards per game. Wisconsin will get more than that, but not enough.

It hasn’t always been pretty, but the Boilermakers are two plays away from being unbeaten. The passing attack has been terrific over the last two weeks, and the defense that has problems against the pass doesn’t have anything to worry about here.

Everyone might be talking about Illinois, but this is when it looks like Purdue might really be the best team in the Big Ten West.

Pitt at Louisville Game Preview

Why Pitt Will Win

Pitt has the offensive versatility to adapt and adjust as the game goes on.

It doesn’t have to wing it around the yard, but it’s got the ability to crank up 300 yards against a Cardinal secondary that was roasted by Boston College and Virginia for 617 yards over the last two games.

Effective on the ground averaging 4.7 yards per carry, the Panthers hammered Virginia Tech for six touchdowns and well over 300 yards in the win two weeks ago. The offense will need everything it can get in this, and it’ll need help the pass rush to get QB Malik Cunningham and the Cardinal O off the field.

The Louisville passing game needs to be more consistent and efficient, however …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Louisville Will Win

Pitt is usually the team with the devastating pass rush that takes over games. This year Louisville has been the best in the ACC at getting to the quarterback.

The D might not be anything special, and the pressure doesn’t necessarily translate into help for the secondary, but the 23 sacks have helped with seven coming in the key win over Virginia two weeks ago.

The Pitt offensive line is okay, but it’s not a brick wall. It can pound away, but it’s allowing well over two sacks per game and it’s about to have problems on third downs.

There’s that, and …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Turnovers. Both teams have problems with them, but they affect the Panthers more going 0-2 when they turn it over multiple times and 4-0 when they don’t.

Louisville might not stop good passing teams from coming up with big yards, but the pass rush forces mistakes with eight takeaways in the last four games.

It’s a swing game for both teams.

Louisville always seems to disappoint when it’s time to come up with a key win, but the home side gets this helped by one extra takeaway.

Boston College vs Wake Forest Game Preview

Why Boston College Will Win

Do what you do, Boston College.

There isn’t any running game to speak of, but that means the passing attack has to work. So far it’s been this simple for the Eagles – throw for 300 and win, throw for fewer than that and lose.

Wake Forest’s pass defense has only allowed over 300 yards once – the loss to Clemson – but it hasn’t faced anyone else who can throw other than Florida State.

The Seminoles got to 281 with three touchdowns in the Demon Deacon win, but Boston College on two weeks of rest should be able to push that unless …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Wake Forest Will Win

The Wake Forest pass rush should work.

Again, Boston College doesn’t have a rushing offense, and it’s not going to start this week. The Demon Deacons don’t have a problem against teams that can throw because they can 1) get to the quarterback and 2) throw better.

They haven’t needed to bomb away for over 300 yards to win, but they’ve been effective and efficient with Sam Hartman settling in, spreading the ball around well, and hitting on the deep shots.

It won’t take too many points to get this done – Boston College doesn’t have the firepower to keep up in any sort of a shootout.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Boston College will have its moments.

It’ll be a bit more of a back-and-forth fight than Wake Forest might like for three quarters, and then Hartman will get hot on the way to a quick burst to put this out of reach.

Being +3 in turnover margin will make it easier.

Colorado vs Oregon State Game Preview

Why Colorado Will Win

Break up the Buffaloes.

Good for Colorado – it was having a miserable season stuck in a miserable situation and with no hope for anything but more misery. But the team rose up under interim head coach Mike Sanford and pulled off a stunning 20-13 win over Cal for the first win of the year.

What was different? The defense showed up.

The worst D in college football allowed 500 yards or more in its previous three games, and then it held the Bears to under 300 and generated a slew of big stops.

Oregon State’s offense is good, but it’s not so unstoppable that it’s a sure thing to roll for over 400.

It gave up four picks in each of the two losses, it’s a bit underwhelming lately though the air, and overall it relies more on balance than anything too explosive.

It took a minor miracle to get by Fresno State and a major one to beat Stanford. The 5-2 record is nice, but if Colorado can bring the defense for a second week in a row, it might have a shot.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Oregon State Will Win

The Colorado offense. It’s still a problem.

The defense might have pulled the win out of the fire against Cal, but the other side turned it over three times – the third three-giveaway game of the season – and it can’t get away with that this week.

Oregon State doesn’t force takeaways, but the run defense has been terrific over the past few weeks, the secondary has been good enough, and it’s not going to have to worry about the Buff attack going off.

Slow and steady can win this race. There’s no Colorado pass rush, so hit the mid-range throws, keep the ball for 35 minutes, get out with a win.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Colorado might not go all the way back to being completely horrible, but it’s not going to have the offense to get back in the game after the balanced Oregon State attack comes up with two early scores.

This won’t be a total wipeout – the Beavers don’t have the O to do that – and there might be a moment of concern in the third quarter, but the stress level should be relatively low as they get bowl eligible.

Texas A&M vs South Carolina Game Preview

Why Texas A&M Will Win

It’s not a question of whether or not the South Carolina turnovers will come. They’ll be there, but how many? It has yet to go a game this year without turning it over at least twice.

Texas A&M tends to play relatively low scoring, tight games with mistakes like the obligatory Spencer Rattler giveaway baked into the gameplan.

Now it’s up to the Aggies to not give them back. The two turnovers in row load to Appalachian State were part of the problem, and the four against Mississippi State helped turn the game into a rout.

Grind away with the running game against a defensive front that gives up 175 yards per game, keep the score low, and win the mistake battle.

South Carolina is 0-2 when it’s -3 in turnover margin. Texas A&M was +3 against Alabama, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why South Carolina Will Win

The Aggie defense doesn’t take the ball away in bunches.

South Carolina can’t be conservative, but it can’t force anything. Rattler wasn’t able to do much of anything in the loss to Georgia, but he got time against Charlotte and South Carolina State to tune up a bit, and he was sharp enough to complement the ground game in the win over Kentucky.

He’ll turn it loose a few times to stretch the A&M secondary, but as long as he’s able to hit the third down throws and come up with a few early scores, he’ll be doing his job.

Texas A&M is struggling to score – it’s last in the SEC in points per game. That’s partly because of the style, and partly because it’s missing the high-octane playmakers.

South Carolina is getting the O going at just the right time, but …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Gamecocks got Kentucky without Will Levis. No excuses, win with what you’ve got, but that wasn’t the same Wildcat team without the top five overall draft pick QB.

They beat Charlotte and South Carolina State, and they started the season off by taking down Georgia State.

Again, win no matter what, you are what your record says you are, and …

It’s not like South Carolina has beaten a slew of killers, losing to Arkansas by 14 and Georgia by 41.

Texas A&M was at least competitive against Alabama, and it was fine against Mississippi State before the turnovers kicked in. Beating Arkansas and Miami isn’t amazing, but it’s something.

This is the fourth straight game away from home for the Aggies, and they’ll be fine as long as they can come up with a few first half scoring drives.

It’ll be tight until the end with A&M’s defense holding up in the final few minutes with a takeaway.

Alabama vs Mississippi State Game Preview

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Let’s just say the Alabama secondary is having a few issues.

Oh sure, it was fine against the ULMs and Vanderbilts of the world, but it struggled to handle Quinn Ewers and the Texas offense – at least before Ewers got knocked out – and now everyone’s trying to hand Hendon Hooker the Heisman after he threw for 385 yards, five touchdowns, and led Tennessee to a late game-winning drive in the 52-49 classic.

That’s bad, and the penalty problems are worse.

There weren’t any flag issues against – again – the ULMs and Vanderbilts of the world, but the 15 penalties against Texas could’ve and probably should’ve been in the 20s, there were ten against Arkansas, and the 17 against Tennessee were a killer.

Mississippi State has its own penalty issues – the Tide should be able to keep up – but more importantly, this isn’t the time to face one of the most productive quarterbacks in college football.

Will Rogers might have struggled a bit in the 27-17 loss to Kentucky last week, but he’s going to throw it 40 times, he’s going to keep the pressure on the Bama corners to deal with the quick-hitting passes, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Alabama Will Win

Rogers doesn’t throw deep enough to matter. That’s not the Mississippi State offense.

Alabama’s secondary has problems with the big played downfield, but it’s not all that bad against everything else. It struggled with Xavier Worthy of Texas, and Tennessee’s Jalin Hyatt turned into Randy Moss last week with his epic five touchdown performance.

Everyone saw the Texas and Tennessee games, but no one else was able to do too much through the air.

Rogers can pick apart the Tide with his midrange throws, but that’s fine – the defensive backs can tackle.

For all the slings and arrows Alabama’s defense is taking, it’s fantastic on third downs. The D is better suited for this style of attack – it’ll bend, but it shouldn’t do a whole lot of breaking.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

14 in a row.

Mississippi State won 17-12 in Nick Saban’s first season with the Tide in 2007. It hasn’t been pretty since then.

The 2017 game was a fight – Alabama pulled it out 31-24 on the way to the national title. Over the last four years it beat the Bulldogs by a combined score of 152 to 16, an average of 38 to 4.

Kentucky’s Will Levis was able to hit just about everything in last week’s win over the Bulldogs, and the Wildcat ground game was able to rumble without a problem. Arkansas didn’t have KJ Jefferson and it was able to run, too, in the 40-17 loss. LSU was able to run for over 200 yards in its win over Mike Leach’s team.

Bryce Young will be Bryce Young against a Bulldog D that doesn’t generate a ton of pressure, the running game will take control, and the secondary will hold up well enough.

It won’t be a total wipeout, and it won’t be a razor sharp performance, but there won’t be too much of a hangover after the Tennessee loss.

Minnesota vs Penn State Game Preview

Why Minnesota Will Win

The Gophers need to find their pounding groove again.

They’ve got the beef up front, the tremendous backs, and the veteran quarterback to make it all go, but those backs – primarily Mohamed Ibrahim – weren’t healthy in the loss to Purdue, and it was the passing game that let the team down in the loss to Illinois.

Penn State hadn’t played anyone who could run. Auburn could sort of run, but not really. Michigan can run, and it did over and over again as it wore down the Nittany Lions with 418 rushing yards in the 41-17 win.

Even after the two losses and all of the problems, Minnesota still leads the nation in third down conversions and third down stops. It’s still the best in the nation at avoiding penalties, it’s the best in the Big Ten at controlling the clock, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Penn State Will Win

Minnesota was able to amass those lofty stats by dominating a slew of mediocre teams.

It’s not the Gophers’ fault that Colorado is bad at college football this year or that Michigan State couldn’t seem to do anything right, but they got to 4-0 without beating a team that will – mostly likely – finish with a winning record.

Purdue and Illinois were the first real tests, and Minnesota failed.

Penn State might have problems on third downs against this D, but the other side of the ball should hold up just fine, especially against the Gopher passing attack.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Which Minnesota team will show up?

Will it be the one that couldn’t do anything wrong in East Lansing in the dominant win over Michigan State, or will it be the one that couldn’t get going in Champaign in the frustrating loss to Illinois?

Besides those being the games against the two best teams on the slate so far, there was one other problem – the turnovers. Minnesota turned it over three times in the first four games and six times – all interceptions – in the last two.

Penn State will struggle, and it’ll get hammered on for the second week in a row. A decent offensive balance and +2 turnover margin will be the difference.
