Army vs ULM Game Preview

Why ULM Will Win

This isn’t the Army we were all expecting.

It’s 2-4 and hasn’t beaten an FBS team – only taking out Villanova and Colgate – with the ground game not quite as dominant as it needs to be and the defense a massive disappointment overall.

The pass rush hasn’t been able to generate a thing, which is partly because the offense isn’t owning the time of possession battle like it needs to.

ULM is hardly perfect, but it’s able to own the clock enough to be a problem. The run defense hasn’t been bad – Alabama is the only offense to crush the Warhawk defensive front – and the biggest issue is a secondary that’s a lock to get hit for 230ish or more yards per game.

That’s not really a concern with Army.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Army Will Win

Just how bad is Army, really?

There’s no dogging the close loss to UTSA, the good road fight against Coastal Carolina, or the loss to Wake Forest, but the turnovers and inability to stop the run were a killer in the loss to Georgia State.

ULM doesn’t do anything particularly well offensively.

It can run a little bit, but it’s not going to gouge the Knight defensive front. It can throw, but it’s not going to crank up 371 yards like it did in the shootout against South Alabama.

– Predictions, Schedule CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

ULM will do more than just hang around, but it’ll never get control.

It has just enough ability to get into the backfield to keep Army from going off, but it won’t force turnovers and it won’t generate enough third down stops. It’ll go on a few scoring drives to keep this close, but the Knight offense and ground attack will take over when it has to in the second half.

Arizona State vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Arizona State Will Win

Did Arizona State find something two weeks ago in the stunning win over Washington?

It’s been a rough year, but interim head coach Shaun Aguano hasn’t helped step up the passing game, the ground game was okay in the loss to USC and the win over the Huskies, and now the team has had two weeks to take a deep breath and make a big push to come up with something fun over the second half of the season.

The passing game pushed past 320 yards in each of the last two games – Trenton Bourquet stepped in against Washington and went off – but it’s going to take something special to pull this off.

Winning the turnover battle would do that.

Stanford came up with two takeaways in the win over Notre Dame, and the team is still the third-worst in the nation in turnover margin.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Stanford Will Win

Maybe that’s what Stanford really is.

It started the season with a win over Colgate before losing four straight, but those losses came to USC at home, then to Washington and Oregon on the road, and then to Oregon State on a miraculous late play. A good team wins at least one of those, but those were forgivable.

And then came the terrific performance in the 16-14 win at Notre Dame, and now there’s real, live hope to somehow get to six wins.

It starts with keeping the chains moving against an Arizona State defense that’s miserable on third downs. That comes from not having any sort of a pass rush to count on – the Sun Devils are dead last in the nation in sacks and second-worst in tackles for loss.

Stanford QB Tanner McKee didn’t exactly pick Notre Dame apart, but he’s terrific if you give him time.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona State will look like a different, more competitive team over the second half of the season, but Stanford is going to make some noise.

It has to go on the road to UCLA, Utah, and up the road to Cal over the next four games, but first it’ll come up with a strong day on the defensive front and the Cardinal skill parts will have time to operate.

It won’t be gorgeous, but it’ll be a second straight win.

Miami vs Duke Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

The Blue Devils might have lost three of their last four, but they’re playing well.

The last two losses were by three points each, the offense picked it back up with a good balance against North Carolina, and the passing game continues to be effective.

The team doesn’t beat itself. There aren’t a ton of penalties, the four turnovers have been spread out, and the special teams are good enough to not be a problem.

Meanwhile, Miami is sputtering along.

Oh sure, it stopped a three-game losing slide with a win over Virginia Tech, but it was hardly dominant – even though the two touchdowns allowed in the 20-14 win came late.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Miami Will Win

Can Miami bomb its way to a win?

The secondary will give up at least 250 yards, but it’s possible to hit the Blue Devil pass defense that struggled against North Carolina’s Drake Maye and Jalon Daniels of Kansas.

QB Tyler Van Dyke doesn’t have to take a ton of chances. He has to hit at least 65% of his throws and keep everything moving against the ACC’s worst defense on third downs.

Yes, Duke hasn’t been bad in the losses over the last month, but the passing production hasn’t been consistent and the run defense has been a bit spotty.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Miami doesn’t do anything easy.

Scoring is like pulling teeth at times, but the passing game is good enough to pile up the yards and respond better than Duke will.

Both teams will keep it close in a back-and-forth fight, but it’ll all come down to whether or not the Hurricanes can keep the turnovers to a minimum.

Duke will have its chances late – the running game will take over at times in the second half – but Miami will hold on for dear life.

Kansas vs Baylor Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

The Jayhawks are able to keep on going.

The defense is the defense. There was a great performance in the loss to Iowa State, but the inability to close down most passing games is part of the deal with the offense able to roll up yards in bunches, even without QB Jalon Daniels.

Yes, Kansas lost to TCU and at Oklahoma, but think of it this way … Kansas lost to an unbeaten TCU in a fight and on the road to a desperate Oklahoma team that got its starting quarterback back.

The passing game has thrown four touchdown passes in three of the last four games, the O is still among the best in the nation on third downs, and the team will make Baylor press.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Baylor Will Win

Baylor is more than happy to throw it around to keep up.

It would rather rely on its defense and get the good running game going to control the clock and tempo, but QB Blake Shapen has been great with the passing attack throwing for 766 yards over the last two games.

Granted, Baylor lost to Oklahoma State and West Virginia, but yeah, the offense can keep up.

And it might not have to push the offense too hard. The Kansas defense gives up first downs and third down conversions in bunches, and at home the Baylor O should be balanced enough to throw well and average five yards per carry. The run defense will hold up fine and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Baylor’s secondary won’t get gouged.

Kansas will get the O going. It’ll be its normal balanced self, but a few turnovers will matter and there will be just enough stalls to give Baylor the opportunity to push through.

It’s Kansas. It’ll be another fun offensive show, and for the third week in a row the other side will do a bit more.

TCU vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

The Wildcats had two weeks off to rest up for this, and TCU has been through the ringer with nasty fights against Kansas and Oklahoma State.

Adaptable, Kansas State was able to get the running game going in shootouts over Oklahoma and Texas Tech, and it fought through a defensive fight to get by Iowa State 10-9. It’s going to be prepared for whatever is coming.

It helps that there aren’t a slew of mistakes. It’s the only team in college football that has yet to throw an interception.

The penalties are kept to a relative minimum, the O has turned it over just three times, and the defense takes care of the rest with third down stop after third down stop helped by enough of a pass rush to be consistently disruptive.

TCU doesn’t turn it over, either, but the D doesn’t come up with enough takeaways partly because the front is just okay at getting into the backfield.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why TCU Will Win

The TCU offense is humming.

The passing game is averaging well over 300 yards over the last five games, the running game is rolling for over six yards per carry, and it all methodically works on the way to being third in the nation in total yards.

Veteran QB Max Duggan is Heisman-talk-worthy, hitting 70% of his passes with 16 touchdowns and just one interception, he’s running well as the steady leader who keeps coming through when needed.

The defense will give up yards in this – it allowed three touchdown runs in three of the last four games – but it’s been solid at keeping big passing games from being consistent.

However …

– Game Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

No excuses – TCU has been brilliant – but …

Oklahoma QB Dillon Gabriel got knocked out of the game early, Kansas QB Jalon Daniels had to leave the game, and Oklahoma State QB Spencer Sanders was apparently playing with a shoulder injury. That obviously mattered, but none of those three starting quarterbacks play defense.

The Kansas State defense is good enough to hold serve to keep TCU from going off, but Duggan and company will keep pressing. This will be a wild back-and-forth fight coming down to who has the ball last.

The home team will.

Maryland vs Northwestern Game Preview

Why Northwestern Will Win

How healthy is Taulia Tagovailoa?

The Maryland star quarterback is questionable with a knee injury, but no matter what the Wildcats have to worry about their own offense.

The running game might not be working, but there’s just enough from the passing attack to potentially give the Terps a few problems.

Maryland got ripped up by Indiana last week and Purdue the week before, but that was expected from a secondary that’s 114th in the nation allowing 277 yards per game.

‘The Terps are more than happy to get flagged a whole bunch – they’ll get hit with at least nine in this – the defense isn’t great on third downs, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Maryland Will Win

Okay, enough stalling. Northwestern continues to be awful.

Seriously, who gives up 322 passing yards and six touchdowns to Wisconsin? All of a sudden one of the most inconsistent offenses in the Big Ten looked like Kansas City Chiefs with the way it was creatively winging it all over the yard.

The Wildcat defense is among the worst in the country, the offense hasn’t scored more than 14 points in a game over the last month, and if that wasn’t all fun enough, no one in the Big Ten turns it over more.

Maryland should be able to get by with a few early scores.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The running game will carry the Terps here.

The next three games: at Wisconsin, at Penn State, Ohio State. The less Tagovailoa has to do in this, the better. He won’t have to do much.

Northwestern will have a good first quarter. The things it worked on over the last two weeks will lead to a few early points, and then the defense will start to struggle with the Terp balance, the turnovers will come, and then it’ll all fall apart.

Virginia vs Georgia Tech Game Preview

Why Virginia Will Win

It’s been a rough run over the last three games – all ACC losses – but the team is rested with two weeks off after playing like it could use a bit of a break.

It’s hardly all doom and gloom in a 2-4 season. The defense is doing a decent job of taking the ball away, the pass rush is strong enough to be a problem for the Georgia Tech offensive line, and the parts are there to finally start cranking up the offense a bit.

Even with the positives over the last few weeks, Georgia Tech is still awful offensively on third downs, the line is still an issue, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

The Yellow Jackets are playing well enough to win.

They might not be anything special, but the defense has stepped it up in wins over Pitt and Duke with the secondary and pressure from the front making a difference. The offense was able to run well against the Panthers and threw it around against the Blue Devils. Expect enough of a balance to keep things moving against the Cavalier D.

There aren’t major penalty problems, there weren’t any turnovers over the last two games, and now everything is trending up.

Virginia is trying to figure out how to win. Georgia Tech is doing it.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams are coming off a two-week break, and both have a make-or-break moment.

Georgia Tech can honestly think about a bowl game with a win, and getting this done is a must with four of the last five games on the road.

Virginia gets four straight home games after this and doesn’t leave the state the rest of the way. Win, and it might kickstart the campaign.

The Cavaliers will be sharper than usual, but they won’t avoid the turnovers. They’ll give it away at least twice. That will be just enough for the revitalized Yellow Jackets to pull through.

Marshall vs James Madison Game Preview

Why James Madison Will Win

What the heck happened to Marshall?

It stunned Notre Dame with a brilliant defensive performance, three takeaways, and a ground game that stepped up and dominated, and … poof. It all went away.

Sort of.

The defense is still solid against the run, but the offense can’t seem to find any semblance of a groove. It couldn’t do anything against the great Troy defense, it couldn’t stop screwing up against Bowling Green, and last week it simply couldn’t move against Louisiana.

It’s not going to start running against the best run defense in the country. James Madison has allowed a grand total of 217 rushing yards so far this year and gave up just 12 against Georgia Southern last week.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Marshall Will Win

James Madison finally dropped its first loss of the year because Georgia Southern threw for 578 yards in a while shootout that was almost as fun as that Alabama-Tennessee thing.

As good as the Dukes are they’re not above turning it over, giving it away four times in the loss. Marshall needs to feed off that.

For all the problems and issues, the Herd have generated multiple takeaways in four of the six games, winning three of them.

Now the Herd have to get the passing game going and …

– Predictions, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Nope.

A few takeaways will keep Marshall in the game, but it’s not running on the Duke defensive front, and there isn’t enough of a passing attack to make up for it.

Marshall won’t be a total pushover, but James Madison will make up for last week’s gaffe.

San Diego State vs Nevada Game Preview

Why San Diego State Will Win

The rested Aztecs should be able to run as much as they want to.

The ground game hasn’t been as effective or dominant as it needs to be over the last six quarters ever since QB Braxton Burmeister got knocked out.

Jalen Mayden – the hero in the win over Hawaii is starting, Burmeister might work at receiver, and the rushing attack should work against a Nevada defense that’s getting hammered.

Nevada’s offense is struggling, the run defense is among the worst in the Mountain West, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Nevada Will Win

San Diego State’s offense doesn’t score without needing a whole lot of help.

It’s like the team forgot that they idea was to get the ball in the end zone. The Aztecs haven’t scored more than 17 points in any of the last four games, the passing game still needs to prove it can be consistent even with the changes, and now it’s up to Nevada to take advantage of it.

A few points should get it done. Nevada has to try getting the ground game going against an SDSU D that was hammered by Boise State and Hawaii.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Nevada has had to travel way too much. It had the emotional loss to Colorado State, went to Hawaii and lost, and now is back in Reno.

San Diego State had two weeks off, the offense should build on the positives against Hawaii, and the two attacks that struggle so much will make this interesting into the fourth quarter. The fresher team will have a little more.

Hawaii vs Colorado State Game Preview

Why Hawaii Will Win

Colorado State just can’t convert on third downs.

It’s starting to get better with the ground game working, but it’s dead last in college football connecting just 17% of the time with a passing attack that doesn’t click.

Give Hawaii a whole lot of credit. It started with a rough hand dealt in a total rebuild under Timmy Chang and it keeps on fighting and battling through a tough season.

It lost a brutal heartbreaker at San Diego State, but came back to rock Nevada with the running game coming up with its best performance of the year. That came on the heels of a strong day in San Diego – the Rainbow Warriors have something in Dedrick Parson.

What’s Going To Happen

The program is used to it, but how much will the travel matter for Hawaii?

There’s one giant break, through, for the Rainbow Warriors.

75 and sunny on Saturday in Fort Collins.

The toughness of the Hawaii running game is coming through, and it should keep on pushing against a Colorado State defense that got ripped through by Utah State in a 17-13 Aggie win. The Rams are sputtering offensively, the passing game just doesn’t work.
