Middle Tennessee vs Colorado State Game Preview

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

That was rough.

Middle Tennessee ran into a James Madison buzzsaw in the 44-7 loss. The defense was awful, the offense was worse, and it was a terrible day against a jacked up team ecstatic to be up in the FBS world.

Middle Tennessee is better than that.

The defense didn’t come up with any takeaways, but they should come against the Colorado State offense. Chase Cunningham is a better all-around quarterback than he showed, the ground game will get going against a defense that got hammered on by Michigan for six yards per carry.

Deep breath … again, it’ll be better.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Colorado State Will Win

Middle Tennessee got rolled by James Madison. No offense to the Dukes, but they’re not Michigan.

The 51-7 loss to the Wolverines was a disaster in all phases, but Colorado State is going to be better than that.

New head coach Jay Norvell has the parts in place to be a problem in a weakened Mountain West. For all of the issues, QB Clay Millen completed 16-of-20 passes, the high-powered passing game should be able to roll against a Blue Raider secondary that allowed six touchdown passes last week to former CSU Ram Todd Centeio, and …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Colorado State will look the part.

The lines couldn’t hold up against the Michigan fronts last week, but they’ll have it a whole lot easier back at home.

This is where the passing game clicks, the Ram rushing attack will average five yards per carry, and Week 1 will be well in the past.

Kansas vs West Virginia Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas had an … easy win?

Not even the FCS cupcake games are sure-thing layups for the Jayhawks over the years, but the program has players now, it has a head coach in Lance Leipold armed with a contract boost, and this whole thing might start to turn fast.

It’s still going to be a struggle in the Big 12, but the offense was balanced in the 56-10 win over Tennessee Tech, QB Jalon Daniels continues to prove he’s going to be a problem for the rest of the conference, and the running game that ran for six touchdowns and close to ten yards per carry should be able to …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why West Virginia Will Win

It’s not going to be easy for Kansas to run.

West Virginia lost in a good 38-31 battle with Pitt, but it got a huge day out of a defensive front that lived behind the line and didn’t give up a thing on the ground.

So what went wrong? Too many penalty, two turnovers, and a hot Kedon Slovis in the clutch ended up being the difference, but the offense was balanced, JT Daniels was fine – even if there weren’t enough downfield plays – and …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Welcome to CJ Donaldson.

The big freshman tight end/running back/receiver/Cordarrelle Patterson made things happen whenever he had the ball in his hands, Daniels is going to get more time to work than he had against the Panthers, and the defense will take care of the rest.

This isn’t going to be your normal Kansas pushover – again, it has playmakers now – but the West Virginia lines will own this.

Michigan vs Hawaii Game Preview

Why Hawaii Will Win

Eventually this passing game is going to work.

It’s been a rough start for the Rainbow Warriors – they just don’t have the guys – but the ball is being spread around, the yards are going to come, and everything needs a little bit of time.

The two games of work so far got the passing parts time, now the interceptions have to stop, the offense has to speed up, and when this clicks – and it will at some point under head coach Timmy Chang – look out. And …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Michigan Will Win

Okay, I’ll quit stalling.

Hawaii was gutted after the tumultuous offseason and it hasn’t been remotely close to being competitive so far.

Vanderbilt rolled at will in a 63-10 win in Honolulu, and then struggled a wee bit against Elon. Western Kentucky had to fight with Austin Peay, and then came up with a 49-17 blowout over Hawaii last week.

The Rainbow Warrior offense will eventually be okay, but the lines aren’t even close.

Michigan could run for 400 yards if it wanted to.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan is going to run for 400 yards as it’s trying to be nice.

Both quarterbacks – JJ McCarthy and Cade McNamara – will spend their afternoon handing the ball off over and over and over again, and the Hawaii defense won’t have any sort of luck holding up.

The Wolverines will get DEEP into the bench in the second half.

Week 2 should be gettable.

We’re all supposed to be smart about this, and we’re all supposed to know what we’re doing, but how can you not overreact to how the teams looked in Week 1?

There are always corrections, changed ideas, and crazy thoughts both ways, but it takes about a month to get a real read on just how good all of these teams are.

So beware. All of the picks try to take out the eye-test – at least a little bit – and stick with logic, reason, and …

Whatever. Week 2 is where we go for it, and then clean up the mess in Week 3. It all starts, though, with a long held belief that won’t be broken now …

Results So Far: 15-5-1

10. Hawaii at Michigan

LINE Michigan -52
ATS PICK Hawaii

If you’ve been reading this piece over the years, you know that you’re supposed to be consistent. Over time, if you stay with it, you’ll be up as long as you don’t stray from the plan.  However …

I actually like Michigan as the pick, but a man is nothing without his principles.

As the schtick goes, if someone is giving you 50 points or more walking into the stadium, you thank them, you don’t ask questions, and you take grab the gift.

Too many things can go wrong. The favorite can pull all the starters early, the underdog can come up with a few late points, the home team bus could get lost – it’s really, really hard to win by more than 50.

The problem is that Hawaii is totally gutted. It can’t hang with the Wolverines in any way, and it’s going to get annihilated.  Michigan might be up 40 at halftime and just stop.

In any event, I’m beating Michigan 52-0 as we speak. Yay.

Unfortunately, though, we have two weeks of Hawaii football to have seen the problem with that, just like …

9. Georgia Southern at Nebraska

LINE Nebraska -23.5
ATS PICK Georgia Southern

I’m staying on the Nebraska Isn’t That Good At College Football train until it stops.

Northwestern with the points against the Huskers was a layup, and there were way too many sputters and coughs last week in the 38-17 win over North Dakota.

Georgia Southern and new head coach Clay Helton got in an easy tune-up against Morgan State, and so until proven otherwise by the Big Red – even though I actually think Scott Frost really will get this thing moving as the season goes on – give me the 23.5 points.

Speaking of sticking with something a tad too long …

8. Kansas at West Virginia

LINE West Virginia -13.5
ATS PICK West Virginia

I’m diving back in one more time to see if the magic happens again.

Kansas was an investment god over stretches in 2020 and 2021 – it never, ever, ever covered with any regularity.

Lance Leipold is a fantastic head coach, he has the program going in the right direction, and Kansas is better than it has been in a long, long time. Asking for a two touchdown win by West Virginia at home, though, isn’t a lot.

I’m buying into the Mountaineer defensive pressure, I’m buying into JT Daniels, and I’m buying into the possibility that Kansas goes back to being that.

[lawrence-related id=550359]

7. Syracuse at UConn

LINE Syracuse -23.5
ATS PICK Syracuse

I can’t believe I’m falling for Syracuse again.

I thought there was something there after a dominant performance at Ohio to start last year, and the next week came a 17-7 home clunker of a loss to Rutgers.

I bought in after an easy win over Georgia Tech in 2020, and then it collapsed in a 14-point home loss to a miserable Duke team.

I loved too much after the 2019 opener against Liberty, and then Maryland went 63-20 on the Orange.

I can’t quit this team.

I’m in that the 31-7 domination of Louisville was for real, I’m not sold that UConn hasn’t improved that much this quickly under Jim Mora Jr., and I’m buying that the Orange really are that good on the lines now.

Be careful if you go with this pick – picks from the heart end up hurting – and be extra wary of …

6. Southern Utah at Utah

LINE Utah -45.5
ATS PICK Southern Utah

I DESPISE FBS vs FCS games after Week 1.

They’re money grabs for the FCS, FBS fans don’t want to see them, and I fully believe that if you’re paying a team to come into your house so you can beat the holy hell out of them – you’re funding most of their athletic department budget – then go ahead and do it.

However, that’s not how coaches think. They want to secure the win, keep everyone healthy, work on some things, and then move on.

I DESPISE picking FBS vs FCS games – too many unknowables and variables – because the FBS teams could almost always win by a gajillion if they wanted.

Utah could beat Southern Utah by 90 if it chose to. However – one 70-7 win over 2013 Weber State aside – Kyle Whittingham usually keeps these games from getting crazy. His Utes haven’t scored more than 40 against an FCS team since taking out Idaho State 56-14 in 2014, and even then the number was 42.

Figure this is something like 41-0, but again, too many weird parts to FBS vs FCS games, so don’t go crazy here.

Florida vs Kentucky Game Preview

Why Kentucky Will Win

That’s what Kentucky does.

It’s not going to be splashy like Tennessee, or brutishly dominant like Georgia, and it certainly doesn’t have the talent of the top SEC West teams. It doesn’t matter.

The Wildcats are going to keep things moving, they’ll generate the defensive stops needed, and they’re going to make teams play at their pace.

Don’t dismiss the 37-13 win over Miami University – the RedHawks have a dangerous offense and should be a factor in the MAC race.

The defense will make Anthony Richardson try to win through the air as the linebackers keep him from making plays on the move – the plays in the backfield were there against MU.

Meanwhile, the offense has a star pro prospect of its own in QB Will Levis coming off a 303-yard performance. He’ll keep pushing a Gator secondary that had issues with the Utah passing game late, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Florida Will Win

The Gators should get a break against the run.

Kentucky would normally come into this looking to grind away – and it might if specifically wasn’t showing anything against Miami last week – but star RB Chris Rodriguez is still out of the mix.

Kavosiey Smoke and the UK running game didn’t go anywhere against the RedHawks, the offensive line had issues keeping the backfield clean, and the O isn’t bringing any more power than Utah delivered in Gainesville.

Richardson had a lot to do with it, but that was an elite Utah run defense that just got hit for 283 yards and over seven yards per dash. The Billy Napier offense knows how to get its runners in space to do big things, the pressure will be on Kentucky to try controlling the tempo even more than it normally does, and …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

It’s Florida vs Kentucky. You know how this works.

The Wildcats pulled off the win last year in Lexington. That was just the second win in the series since 1986, but it’s 2-2 over the last four years.

For all of the great things Richardson did in the win over Utah, and for all the amazing things the team did, it took a horrible, horrible decision by Ute QB Cameron Rising to get out alive.

The defense will come up with a late stop in this, only this time breaking up a Levis pass in the end zone to survive.

UK might be a football school now, but it has just one win in Gainesville since 1979. That’s not going to change.

Penn State vs Ohio Game Preview

Why Ohio Will Win

That was more like it.

After struggling in a strange 2021, Ohio came out roaring with a strong 41-38 win over Florida Atlantic. There weren’t any turnovers, the offense cranked up the passing game, and the defense was able to weather the storm.

QB Kurtis Rourke is a dangerous all-around playmaker who can hit the big play, run around a bit, and potentially pick apart a Penn State secondary that had plenty of issues with the Purdue passing game in a thrilling 35-31 win.

The defense that did a great job of getting behind the line against FAU should be able to hold up a bit, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Penn State Will Win

Penn State was able to survive and advance.

The win over Purdue was one of those moments that sets the tone for an entire season.

It was down and in big trouble, and then the offense got the ball back and Sean Clifford went to work with a late drive and his fourth touchdown pass of the game to get the win.

Ohio is a lot better this season, but the secondary is questionable – it got ripped apart by FAU’s N’Kosi Perry. Penn State should be able to throw well and dink and dunk as much as it wants, but …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

This is about the ground game for Penn State.

It struggled to get anything consistently going against Purdue and there weren’t any big, gashing dashes. Ohio didn’t allow much of anything against the FAU running game, but in this, Penn State has to let the O line eat.

When that doesn’t happen, Clifford will go back to work. This will be more dangerous than Penn State might like for a little while, but it’ll pull away in the second half.

Ohio State vs Arkansas State Game Preview

Why Arkansas State Will Win

That wasn’t exactly the Ohio State we were expecting to kickoff the season.

Superstar WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba was hurt, the offense sputtered, and it took a whole lot to put away Notre Dame in the 21-10 win. The Arkansas State defense isn’t anywhere near as strong as the Irish version – and Grambling State isn’t Ohio State – but it allowed just 102 yards of total offense in the 58-3 win to get things going.

QB James Blackman is a former Florida State transfer who isn’t going to be fazed by the big stage against the great team, the offense as a whole should be able to do even more than the Irish were able to – it’ll open it up and take some more chances – and there’s enough of a running game to catch a Buckeye team relaxing after the massive victory against the Irish.

Why Ohio State Will Win

Yeah, again, Grambling State isn’t Ohio State.

The Buckeye offense was fine. It wasn’t cranking up the gajillion yards right away that everyone expected, but that was the No. 5 team in the country on the other side.

Forget the O – there’s no worry there. The defense that spent all offseason tweaking and looking to improve came out smoking. Notre Dame didn’t exactly take any big chances, but the Buckeyes didn’t allow anything against the run, kept Tyler Buchner from hitting the downfield throws, and it pitched a shutout in the second half.

However …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Here comes the offense.

Ohio State’s defense won’t allow Arkansas State to come close to the six yards per carry it rolled for last week, but this is when the O gets to eat against a defense that might have looked good early, but doesn’t have the parts to come up with enough key stops to make this interesting.

Minnesota vs Western Illinois Game Preview

Why Western Illinois Will Win

The Leathernecks have a few playmakers who can make the Minnesota defense work.

The passing game is strong – Neseim Brantley is coming off a six-catch, 171-yard, three touchdown day in the 42-25 loss to UT Martin – with big plays and downfield throws there.

The O has to take its shots. Minnesota might be on letdown alert with Colorado and Michigan State up next, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Minnesota Will Win

Western Illinois has a shaky run defense and isn’t going to be big on the time of possession battle this season.

Uh oh.

UT Martin came up with good run after good run on the way to 260 yards averaging six yards per pop. The Minnesota ground game was fine against New Mexico State in the 38-0 win – it was more workmanlike than sensational – but it controlled the game throughout.

The Golden Gophers had the ball for close to 45 minutes, the defense pitched a gem, and …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The goal here will be to get the Minnesota passing game going fast and get to the twos as soon as humanly possible.

The program has a way of taking it easy here and there against the lightweights, but the defense appears to be looking to make a statement early on – at least it played that was against NMSU.

If it seems like the Minnesota offense is always on the field, it’s because it will be.
