Close to home: Treylon Burks picked by Tennessee Titans in first round

Treylon Burks goes No. 17 to the Tennessee Titans.

[autotag]Treylon Burks[/autotag]’ Arkansas career is over on the field. But the Warren, Arkansas, native can stay close to home.

Burks, who left Arkansas after three seasons, was taken in the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday night with the No. 18 pick by the Tennessee Titans. Tennessee traded up to make the selection that was originally owned by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Burks caught 66 passes for 1,104 yards and 11 touchdowns during his junior year and helped the Razorbacks to their best record since 2011. Burks is the only player inside the top 10 of Arkansas receiving records who played just three seasons.

The last Arkansas player to be taken in the first round was Frank Ragnow by the Detroit Lions in 2018. He was taken with pick No. 20 that year. Burks is the highest selection from Arkansas since Darren McFadden went No. 4 in 2008 to Oakland.

Montaric Brown wants to be an “example” for his hometown

“Being from Ashdown, I just want [the kids] to think that you can make it from anywhere, no matter where you come from,” says Brown in an interview with KATV in Little Rock.

Arkansas defensive back [autotag]Montaric Brown[/autotag] is living the dream of most boys who grow up in Arkansas by playing for the Razorbacks and having a shot to play in the NFL.

Brown, who played in 42 games over a five-year span at Arkansas, signed with the program during one of its’ lowest points. In an interview with KATV in Little Rock, Brown says that he would not trade his time at Arkansas for anything.

“Just being from Arkansas, Arkansas doesn’t have an NFL team so I cheer for Arkansas like my NFL team,” Brown says. “It was a dream as a little kid to come to Arkansas so there was no way I was leaving.”

Now that his college days are behind him, Brown is preparing for the NFL Draft, which is set to take place April 28-30. According to NFL analyst Lance Zierlein, Brown is a projected round 5-6 pick.

But, no matter where Brown begins his NFL journey, he wants to continue setting an example to kids from his hometown of  Ashdown, Ark. That example? Your dreams are never out of reach.

“Being from Ashdown, I just want [the kids] to think that you can make it from anywhere, no matter where you come from,” Brown says. “I just want to be that example. You can make it out of any situation.”

After redshirting his freshman season in 2017, Brown started in 34 games from 2018-2021 for Arkansas. During his time as a Razorback, Brown recorded 132 total tackles with seven interceptions and 23 pass deflections. During his senior season, Brown was named first team All-SEC after leading the conference with five interceptions, in addition to recording 54 tackles.

Ringer Mock: Burks to Green Bay

With 37 days to go until the NFL Draft begins, look for more and more mock drafts to pop up. The Ringer put out a new one Tuesday morning, and they have picked up on a popular rumor: Green Bay trying to replace Davante Adams via the draft. And they think Treylon Burks fits the bill.

After dealing superstar receiver Davante Adams to the Raiders, the Packers hope to pull off a Vikings-esque move here and turn the first-round pick they got from trading away an All-Pro talent into his immediate replacement. Burks is a threat at all three levels and gives Aaron Rodgers a new go-to guy.

Burks versatility makes him an intriguing prospect for whichever team ultimately gains his services. The comps to Deebo Samuels have gained steam, and that’s clearly a profile offensive coordinators crave. He can play all three receive spots, lined up in the backfield on occasion for the Hogs, and shown he can handle a Wildcat package, too.

The NFL Draft kicks off on April 28.

Brandon Allen, Bengals Advance to Super Bowl 56

Former Arkansas quarterback Brandon Allen and the Cincinnati Bengals surprised the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

At least one former Razorback will have the chance to win a Super Bowl.

Former Arkansas quarterback Brandon Allen and the Cincinnati Bengals surprised the home-standing Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday when kicker Evan McPherson nailed a 32-yard field goal in overtime to defeat the Chiefs, 27-24, at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

This was the second time in as many weeks that the Bengals called on McPherson to win the game at the last second. In the Divisional Round against the Tennessee Titans last Sunday, McPherson was called on to kick a 52-yard field goal as time expired to grab the 19-16 win.

This will be the Bengals first Super Bowl appearance since 1989, and their third overall.

Allen, a back-up quarterback for the Bengals, has completed 107 passes for 1,074 yards and seven touchdowns in two seasons with the Bengals, playing in 11 total games. In his five-year career, Allen has seen the most field time with Cincinnati. Allen appeared in only three games with the Denver Broncos in 2019, and in zero games between 2016-2018 with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Los Angeles Rams

Brandon Allen and the Bengals Move On to AFC Divisional Round

The Razorback QB is enjoying the ride as the Bengals continue to make history.

One ex-Razorback’s NFL season stays alive with a last-second field goal.

Former Arkansas quarterback Brandon Allen and the Cincinnati Bengals advance to the AFC Divisional Round by knocking off the Tennessee Titans, 19-16, on a chilly Saturday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn.

One week after winning their first playoff game since 1990, the Bengals earned another win thanks in part to a 52-yard field goal at the buzzer by rookie kicker Evan McPherson, which was the most important of his four made field goals of the game.

Although not appearing in the game, Allen is a part of one of the most special Bengals teams in recent memory. Saturday’s win over the Titans marks the first time that the Bengals have won at least two playoff games since 1988.

Allen has completed 107 passes for 1,074 yards and seven touchdowns in two seasons with the Bengals, playing in 11 total games. In his five-year career, Allen has seen the most field time with Cincinnati. Allen appeared in only three games with the Denver Broncos in 2019, and in zero games between 2016-2018 with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Los Angeles Rams.

Bumper is Back: Arkansas Linebacker to make Razorbacks Return

All-SEC linebacker and All-Universe name-haver Bumper Pool will return for his super senior season, capping a roller coaster week for Arkansas fans. Bumper’s announcement stems the tide of transfers and draft entrants on the defensive side of the ball. It only makes sense that the team leader in tackles makes a crucial stop at the end of the week.

Here’s Bumper discussing with Cousin Sal and the Extra Points gang, with whom he has a NIL agreement.

This comes after last night’s announcement that backup quarterback Malik Hornsby would enter the transfer portal. He follows, among others, fellow backups Devin Bush, Darin Turner, Jermaine Hamilton-Jordan, sometimes starter Greg Brooks, and 2021 captain Joe Foucha. Opting to try their hands at the NFL are Busta Brown, Tre Williams, John Ridgeway, Markell Utsey, and first-round lock Treylon Burks.

For all the weeping and gnashing of teeth this week about players transferring out of the program, the Hogs have only lost one true starter while retaining Bumper and Jalen Catalon (who last night basically told the Hogs faithful to chill out). Brooks started occasionally and would have pushed for a starter’s role this season. But the Razorbacks have continued to develop real depth in the secondary. Guys like Myles Slusher have plenty of snaps in SEC play now. And yet-to-sign-but-committed Myles Rowser may see his chance at early playing time.

Bye, Bye Busta

After an All-SEC season, a clean sweep of trophy games, and an Outback Bowl championship Montaric “Busta” Brown is ready to tackle his next challenge.

After an All-SEC season, a clean sweep of trophy games, and an Outback Bowl championship Montaric “Busta” Brown is ready to tackle his next challenge. The Ashdown, Ark. native will forego his final year of eligibility and enter the NFL draft. Brown led the Hogs and the SEC in interceptions this season with five.

The two All-SEC defensive backs from 2020 that entered the draft were both drafted. Denver selected Patrick Surtain II (Alabama) in the first round, and Cleveland took Richard LeCounte (Georgia) in the fifth. Brown, the former 4-star recruit, stands six-feet ball and is listed at 190 pounds. He certainly has the frame of an elite NFL defensive back.

Former Hog Greenlaw having groin surgery

Current 49ers, former Arkansas linebacker Dre Greenlaw out 6-8 weeks after surgery.

Dre Greenlaw returned an interception for a touchdown in the San Francisco 49ers’ season-opening victory over the Detroit Lions.

Unfortunately, he was not on the field for the next series and later headed to the locker room and did not return.

It was announced on Thursday that he would be having surgery on his groin and would be sidelined 4-6 weeks at a minimum.

Greenlaw has only missed three games in his career to this point, two of which was from a quad injury he suffered a year ago.

His 87 tackles he made as a rookie in 2019 were the fourth-most ever in franchise history, trailing only Patrick Willis, Fred Warner and Chris Borland while helping lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl.

Greenlaw played for Arkansas from 2015 to 2018. He compiled 320 tackles during those four years before being drafted in the fifth round of the 2019 draft by the 49ers.

Former Hogs Trey Flowers, Frank Ragnow named captains for Detroit Lions

Two former Arkansas football players named captains of Detroit Lions at the same time.

Former Arkansas defensive lineman and former Arkansas center Frank Ragnow were named team captains for the Detroit Lions on Monday.

Flowers, who played at Arkansas from 2011-2014, is entering his third season with the Lions and seventh in the NFL. He played in seven games last year with five starts. A fractured forearm ended his season early. Flowers has recorded 30 sacks in his last five years combined.

Ragnow was named to his first Pro Bowl last year, his third season with Lions. Ragnow played guard and center at Arkansas from 2014-2017. He has started all 45 games he’s played with Detroit in his career.

Flowers and Ragnow are two of 15 active NFL players. Another five are on NFL practice squads and two more are on reserved lists.
