Miami vs Georgia Tech Game Preview

Why Miami Will Win

There actually are a few positives here, even after a 45-3 loss at home to Florida State. It starts with this – we know what the problem is.

Yes, the lack of a steady rushing attack thanks to a rough year from the offensive line is part of it. And yes, being forced to take a whole lot of chances has something to do with it. But when this team doesn’t turn the ball over, decent things happen.

When it does, it loses.

Miami is 0-4 when it gives the ball away multiple times. It doesn’t have the steadiness, the defense, or the offensive explosiveness to overcome the mistakes.

It’s 4-1 when it doesn’t turn it over two times or more. The competition had a lot to do with that, too, but Georgia Tech is only a little bit above the Virginia/Virginia Tech range.

Don’t turn it over, get the ground game rolling, and …

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Georgia Tech forces takeaways.

Very, very quietly, the team hasn’t been too bad through all the issues and injuries. It’s a simple equation – when the Yellow Jackets win when they run for 180 yards or more going 4-0. When they don’t, they’re 0-5.

Miami’s defense has allowed 200 rushing yards or more in two of the last three games, QB Tyler Van Dyke is hurting with a shoulder problem, and again, the takeaways.

Georgia Tech has come up with eight turnovers in the last three games and two more in six of the last eight outings.

What’s Going To Happen

Call this a bowl elimination game.

Miami has a trip to Clemson next before closing out against Pitt – it has to win two out of the last three.

Georgia Tech has to go on the road to North Carolina and Georgia – it has to win two out of the last three.

Nah, neither team will go bowling, but Miami will get one step closer to its offseason a little bit sooner as Georgia Tech wins in its final home game of the season.

Miami vs Georgia Tech Game Preview

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

The offense has been great.

It might have taken a while to shift away from the triple-option, but a few years later, it’s now consistently balanced, the running game still works, and the there are real, live, 300-yard passing games.

The Yellow Jackets threw for 300 in the shootout loss to Virginia and the wild loss to Pitt. The previous 300-yard passing game before October of 2021? September 1, 2011 vs. Western Carolina.

Miami’s defense has been torched all year. For all the Turnover Chain stuff and all of the plays in the backfield, the Canes were hit for over 800 passing yards in the last two games.

They’re the worst in the ACC in time of possession, turnover margin, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Miami Will Win

The program has its quarterback.

Tyler Van Dyke has been terrific in place of D’Eriq King, throwing for over 200 yards in each of his five starts – improving his numbers in each of the last four games.

He might not have outgained Kenny Pickett last week, but he hit the deep shots and threw for 426 yards and three scores in the win over Pitt, and that’s coming off a massive performance in the win over NC State.

Georgia Tech’s offense might be better and more diverse, but it’s not moving the chains enough to overcome a spotty defense that’s giving up close to 270 passing yards per game.

Van Dyke should have a nice day.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It’s do-or-die time for both teams in their hopes of going bowling.

It would still take a miracle for Georgia Tech to get to a bowl game even with a win – it has to win three of its last four games and still has Notre Dame and Georgia to deal with – so forget about it with a loss.

Miami is playing too well offensively, but the Yellow Jackets will get enough yards and big plays to keep this close.

Finally, though, the Hurricanes have figured out how to win close games.

Miami (10-16) vs Georgia Tech (15-8) Game Preview

Why Miami Will Win

All of a sudden, Miami is decent at basketball.

It lost six straight games and ten of 11 before going on a three game winning run including a 67-64 victory over Clemson in the first round of the ACC Tournament.

It wasn’t pretty, and it was hardly easy, but the Canes were able to hit 54% from the field, knocked down a few key shots in the second half, and they held on for dear life to move on as a 13 seed.

They don’t get nailed with a whole slew of silly fouls, they’re as good as anyone in the ACC outside of North Carolina when it comes to grabbing rebounds, and now they get a Georgia Tech team that can’t guard from three and is the worst rebounding team in the ACC.

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Miami might have held on, but it allowed Clemson to hit 52% from three because there were way too many assists – 15 and extra passes for points. Georgia Tech is excellent at keeping things moving around which is why it’s one of the best teams in the ACC in field goal percentage.

On a six-game winning streak, the Yellow Jackets have hit more than half their shots in the last seven games even though they’re not that great from three – they get to the rim and they make a whole lot of easy shots.

What’s Going To Happen

Miami wasn’t close to coming up with a big stop in a 87-60 loss to Georgia Tech a few weeks ago.

The Yellow Jackets hit 57% from the field, locked down enough on the Hurricane offense from the outside when it tried to come back, and now it’ll be more of the same.

Be shocked if Georgia Tech isn’t at least 50% from the field.
