Former UGA defensive end suffers season-ending injury

A former Georgia Bulldog, who transferred to Missouri this offseason, will miss the 2024 season with a significant knee injury.

The Missouri Tigers were hit with unfortunate news: Former Georgia Bulldogs defensive end Darris Smith suffered a knee injury in practice. The injury will force him to miss the 2024 season, according to Eli Hoff of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The edge rusher appeared in 16 games as a reserve over his first two collegiate seasons with UGA before transferring to Missouri over the summer. He was in a competition for the starting job with Michigan State transfer Zion Young, but he’ll have to wait another year to start his first game in the SEC.

“We are devastated by the injury to Darris,” head coach Eli Drinkwitz said,“He was having an outstanding camp and was poised to have a great year. We will support Darris in his recovery and look forward to him returning stronger than before.”

For the Tigers, it’s more than likely Young will fill the second edge rusher spot opposite Johnny Walker Jr. and replace 2024 first-round NFL draft pick Darius Robinson Jr. on the end. Regardless, it’s a blow for Georgia and Missouri fans looking to see how Darris Smith would’ve performed in a more expansive role.

Georgia softball falls to UCLA, eliminated in super regional

The UGA softball team has been eliminated after losing in consecutive games to UCLA in the NCAA Tournament.

The Georgia Bulldogs softball team has been eliminated in the NCAA Tournament. Star Jayda Kearney and the No. 11 national seed Bulldogs dropped a pair of road games to the No. 6 national seed UCLA Bruins to conclude Georgia’s season.

The Dawgs went 43-19 on the season with ton of quality wins. However, Georgia had a bit of slump to end the season after getting the year off to a hot start. UCLA won Game 1 against Georgia 8-0 and then topped the Bulldogs 6-1 in Game 2. The Bruins are advancing to the Women’s College World Series.

“Congratulations to UCLA, they really put themselves in a position where they’re playing good softball in all phases of the game,” said Georgia softball coach Tony Baldwin. “I think they’re about as complete a team as we’ve played and we’ve played a lot of good ones.”

The Bulldogs were hoping to make a run to the Women’s College World Series, but came up just short in the Los Angeles Super Regional.

“They’re just good kids,” said Baldwin on Georgia’s senior class. “Good people, that have grown. We all have shortcomings that we’re trying to overcome in our lives, and you have to tackle some of those things head-on. I think the beautiful thing about college softball, and what I hope Georgia softball is it’s a safe place to grow as a person.”

Georgia football RB commits to transfer destination

Georgia football running back is transferring to a MAC program

Georgia Bulldogs senior running back Sevaughn Clark entered the transfer portal as a graduate transfer in January. Clark, who is from Dawsonville, Georgia, has one year of eligibility remaining.

Now, Clark has committed to the Toledo Rockets. Clark announced his commitment to Toledo via social media.

Clark was a walk-on for the Bulldogs and saw limited playing time over the past four years in Athens. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound running back appeared in five games during the 2023 season, including 32 yards and touchdown in Georgia’s win over UAB. Clark rushed for 35 yards Georgia’s blowout national championship win against TCU. The former unranked recruit finished his Georgia career with 145 rushing yards, which is not bad for a walk-on.

Clark should see significantly more snaps at Toledo, which finished 11-3 last season and is one of the top teams in the MAC. Clark previously entered the transfer portal after the 2022 season and elected to return to UGA. In 2024, he would have faced stiff competition for carries in Georgia’s loaded running back room. The Bulldogs are returning Branson Robinson, Roderick Robinson and Cash Jones. The Bulldogs brought in Florida transfer Trevor Etienne and elite recruit Nate Frazier.

Clark is not the only Georgia running back to transfer this offseason. Andrew Paul transferred after having a great spring for the Dawgs.

The Georgia Bulldogs forward Jalen Deloach has committed to the Loyola Chicago Ramblers after one season at Georgia. Deloach is electing to transfer away from Georgia after the Bulldogs went 20-17 and advanced to the National Invitational Tournament final.

Deloach is a second-time transfer. He previously started 32 games as a sophomore at VCU.  The lengthy forward averaged 9.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game in his final season with the VCU Rams. That year, the Rams won the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

ESPN names Kirby Smart top coach of next decade

After the exits of Nick Saban and Jim Harbaugh, ESPN’s Bill Connelly sees Kirby Smart as the clear favorite to be the top coach in defining the next decade of college football.

Following the retirement of Nick Saban and NFL departure from Jim Harbaugh, the coaching overhaul in college football has left questions as to who will step up and replace such prominent voices. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart’s résumé would make him a clear favorite, a sentiment echoed by ESPN’s Bill Connelly in his recent rankings of the “30 coaches who will define the next decade of college football” (ESPN+ subscription required to access).

Smart was placed atop the rankings, in the tier of “Successful head coaches with plenty of tread left on the tires”. Connelly cites Smart’s success in relation to other former Saban assistants, as well as the fact that he has not lost to a non-Saban coached team since 2020. His two national titles are tied for the lead among active coaches and Georgia’s relentless recruiting makes it all the more likely that Kirby Smart will stay ranked No. 1. “He’s the top dawg in this sport”, writes Connelly.

Smart’s coaching tree also has a presence on the list, with Oregon head coach and former Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning ranking No. 7 overall and current defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann ranking at the top among assistant coaches.
