UNLV Loses Close Game To Fresno State, 31-24

UNLV tried to make a late comeback against Fresno State

Recap of the game

It was a back and forth game that saw UNLV capture and lose a lead between the first and second halves.

UNLV entered halftime with a 17-7 lead and it appeared that the Rebels would be en route to an upset win. Fresno State turned it on in the third quarter and scored 24 unanswered points. That was enough for Fresno State to hold onto a lead for the remainder of the game.

UNLV quarterback Jayden Maiava passed for two touchdowns, two interceptions, and 268 passing yards. Fresno State quarterback Mikey Keene threw for four touchdowns, two interceptions and 256 yards in the win over UNLV.

Ricky White was Maiava’s most relied upon receiver with two receiving touchdowns and 152 receiving yards. Fresno State running back Malik Sherrod made a difference in the receiving game. He caught a touchdown pass and finished the game with eight catches for 28 yards.

This game had all of the offense you could possibly want. For Fresno State, the program moved to 7-1 with the win. The Bulldogs are set to face Boise State on Saturday, Nov. 4. UNLV dropped to 6-2 on the season and will look to bounce back against New Mexico on Saturday, Nov. 4.

Odds: – 9.5

On the night the Bulldogs are set to induct legendary Head Coach Pat Hill into the ring of honor. The Dogs will also have a tall task headed of them as they host the (6-1) UNLV Rebels on homecoming night.

The Rebels are coming off a close victory over Colorado State. The Bulldogs are coming off a bye week and all eyes will be at the Quarterback position. Will Mikey Keene be back for the Bulldogs? Or will Logan Fife get his second start of the season?  Which quarterback will try to help the Bulldogs to a victory?

Keys to the Game:

Creating turnovers:

If the Bulldog defense is going have any success in stoping UNLV offense led by Freshman quarterback Jayden Maiava then it will start with creating turnovers. Maiava has thrown only two interceptions all season and hasn’t thrown one in his last three games. The Rebels in seven games have only turned it over six times this season. The Bulldogs have to find ways to keep this offense off the field. This Bulldog secondary will have their work cut out for them Saturday night but can they step it up when the Bulldogs need it the most?

Which Play maker will step up?

Some games it’s Erik Brooks another game it could be Jalen gill or lately it has been Jalen Moss and last game it was Tre Watson. This game could easily turn into a shootout and the Bulldogs are going to need all their play makers to play make plays in this one. The question will be can these guys take over the game and make enough play for the Bulldogs. If Keene plays how healthy is he really to throw down the field or move put of the pocket and if it’s Fife do the Bulldogs trust him enough to make enough plays with his arm. I do believe the Dogs will look to get the ball out quick and depend a lot on these play makers to create offense for the Bulldogs.

Control the tempo

Simple things will be a factor when two high powered offenses clash. For the Bulldogs it will really be a good test for the offense to see how they control the game. Questions will be will the Bulldogs have a running game to control the pace of the offense and the game. The Dogs have to play smart and wise with the clock and keep UNLV offense off the field. Long drives and  physical drives will be another key to a Bulldogs victory.  Can’t let this game be in the control of the Rebels hands. The Dogs do not want to be in a shootout with UNLV.

Predictions:

Both teams are well alive for a Mountain West Championship berth but only one team can come out of Valley Children’s stadium with a win. Two high powered offenses and two well coached teams. I think experience is going to help the Bulldogs in this one. I believe the Bulldogs find a way to pull out a narrow victory thanks to their run game.

Rebels 31-38 Bulldogs

Mountain West Wire Game of the Week Simulation: UNLV at Fresno State

The NCAA 14 Video Game Says UNLV defeats Fresno State 28-13

Contact/Follow @PSeanU1 & @MWCwire

UNLV got a mulligan after being featured in last weeks simulation, where they lost to Colorado State 31-21. For the second week in a row, UNLV is center stage playing a top Mountain West opponent in week nine. This Saturday, the UNLV Rebels travel West to take on the Fresno State Bulldogs at Valley Children’s Stadium.

With their second crack at a simulation victory, UNLV came away with a W by defeating the Bulldogs 28-13. Mikey Keane and the Fresno offense left much to be desired coming away empty handed on half of their redzone appearances (2/4) and barely clearing 240 yards of total offense. Keane in particular was just 14/32 for 161 yards. Not what the Bulldog faithful have come to expect from this offense.

The Reb’s were able to get a good balance between the rushing attack and pass game. Courtney Reese cleared 100 yards on the ground with two tudd’s, while Doug Brumfield (who started in this simulation) chipped in just under 190 through the air. The UNLV defense did their part, forcing the games lone turnover courtesy of Cam Oliver, and largely limiting Fresno’s offense.

It will be interesting to see how this one really plays out Saturday, as this matchup could have serious implications on who will be playing in the Mountain West Championship game.

If you  have a strong opinion on who should be our featured simulation next week, let us hear about it @MWCwire.

Week 9 is just about here for Mountain West football and our power rankings leading into the week are seeing some changes. The big change happened due to Nevada get its first win of the year by winning 6-0 over San Diego State.

The poll changes have a lot more to do with the Aztecs with the loss and the Wolf Pack getting its first win of the year.

UNLV keeps winning but can they crack the top three, our Magic Eight-Ball has that unlikely. The Rebels can make a move this week if they can upset Fresno State.

Here are how some of our staff voted.

UNLV Football: How the Rebels Can Beat Fresno State, How To Watch, Odds, Prediction

The UNLV Rebels have their real test this Saturday night against the Fresno State Bulldogs on the road. These programs have played each other as part of three different conferences (Big West, WAC, and now MW), and Fresno State leads the overall series 18-7.

Date: Saturday, October 28, 2023

Time: 7:30 PM PT

TV: Fox Sports 1

Live Stream: Watch this game on Fubo

City: Fresno, California

Venue: Bulldog Stadium at Jim Sweeney Field

Odds: Fresno State -9

The UNLV Rebels have their real test this Saturday night against the Fresno State Bulldogs on the road. These programs have played each other as part of three different conferences (Big West, WAC, and now MW), and Fresno State leads the overall series 18-7. This marks the first time these teams will play on a Saturday in three years, as the last two meetings occurred on a Friday night.

UNLV, who is receiving votes in both major polls for the first time since 2003, is bowl-eligible for the first time since playing in the Heart of Dallas Bowl after the 2013 season.

Rushing Attack

For the Rebels to win this game, they must lean on their rushing attack. UNLV averages 209 yards per game. The Rebels have three running backs with over 300 yards rushing on the season. Vincent Davis Jr. leads the team with 388 yards, Donavyn Lester adds 325 yards, and Jai” Den Thomas has 319.

The Rebels rushing attack is critical because it keeps them in third and manageable; now, UNLV converts 53% of their third down conversions. The Bulldogs do a decent job stopping the run, giving up 114 yards per game; that’s good for second in the Mountain West.

Slow Down Bulldogs

On Defense, the Rebels must slow down the Fresno State offense; they averaged 34 points per game. They pass the ball well with Mikey Keene, who has passed for 1,692 yards, 15 touchdowns, and four interceptions. The Bulldogs can also run the ball with Malik Sherrod and Elijah Gilliam.

The Rebels must focus on stopping the run and putting pressure on Keene to make him uncomfortable.

Turnovers

The turnover battle will be key on Saturday night. Who wins the turnover battle will likely win. Rebels quarterback Jayden Maiava must refrain from turning the ball over. With the Bulldogs focusing on stopping the run, there will be plays to be made down the field; that’s when Ricky White should come into play.

Prediction

Bulldogs winning a classic game in the final seconds, 28-27.

Jeremy and Josh are back to preview Week 9 of Mountain West football. First, they get into the weird Pac-2 plan with Oregon State and Washington State trying to remain a league while also having a scheduling agreement with the Mountain West.

After that, they get into the full slate of Saturday games that feature some solid matchups like Fresno State vs. UNLV and Wyoming taking Boise State. Plus, a true sickos game between Nevada and New Mexico where the former is favorite.

Three teams are bowl eligible

[mm-video type=playlist id=01g1kx1m9c8rz2mjgq player_id=none image=https://mwwire.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Fresno State, Air Force, and UNLV are the first three teams to become bowl eligible within the Mountain West. The Rebels are bowl eligible for the the first time since 2013 when they finished with a 6-6 regular season record and went to the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

The Wyoming Cowboys should be the next team to get to bowl eligibility. They are 5-1 but have a tough matchup this week at Boise State. The Cowboys will get there relatively soon, if not this week.

Then there are a slow of three win teams with Boise State, San Jose State, Utah State, San Diego State, Colorado State, and New Mexico.

According to ESPN’s FPI, here are the chances of these teams getting to the needed six wins.

  • Wyoming 99.8%
  • Boise State at 62.5%
  • Utah State at 54.3%
  • San Jose State at 48.2%
  • Colorado State at 34.2 %
  • New Mexico at 13%
  • San Diego State at 9.7%

History has had seven Mountain West teams go bowling, so by going by that matrix that means the Broncos, Aggies, Spartans and Rams will be in the postseason to make it an extra one and go with eight teams.

The Aztecs 6-0 loss to Nevada gives very, very little confidence they can figure things out and get to a bowl game. The Lobos chances are slim due to the schedule.

They go to Nevada, host UNLV, go to Boise State and then Fresno State, with a finale hosting the Aggies. That is a tough go for a bowl game but getting to four wins would double last year’s win total.

Week 8 2023 Mountain West Football: Best Bets

A look at the Mountain West betting odds for Week 8

Contact/Follow @J0shFr3d & @MWCwire

What are the oddsmakers saying about these match ups?

Late in the week we will look at odds and recent lines and make our best picks and bets. Odds courtesy of Vegas Insider.

We went 2-4 in week seven and are 35-27-1 on the year. Another week below .500. At this point, just take the opposite of what I do.

#22 Air Force @ Navy (+10, O/U 33.5)

Air Force has been dominant all season. They got tested against Wyoming, but have taken care of business against everyone else. Navy is in that everyone else category. Usually service academy matchups are close, but the Midshipmen haven’t been at that level the past few years. Take the Falcons to cover.

Pick: Air Force -10

Hawai’i @ New Mexico (+2.5, O/U 60.5)

The Warriors are looking for their first road win of the Timmy Chang era. The run-and-shoot offense is start to gain a foothold. The Lobos looked to be turning a corner on offense, but backslid against San Jose State. Look for that to continue against Hawai’i.

Pick: Hawai’i -2.5

Colorado State @ UNLV (-7.5, O/U 61.5)

It’s a shootout in Vegas this week. The Rebels and Rams both have horrible defenses and it probably won’t change this week unless something drastic happens. Look for this to get close to 70-75 points.

Pick: Over

Utah State @ San Jose State (-4.5, O/U 66.5)

This is the Mountain West trap game of the week. San Jose State broke out of their funk against New Mexico. The Aggies had a chance to beat Fresno State. This has the makings of an offensive slugfest. I still don’t trust the Spartans and the Aggies have shown something these past couple of weeks.

Pick: Utah State +4

Nevada @ San Diego state (-11.5, O/U 47.5)

Look Nevada is bad and has a chance to go winless this year. The Aztecs aren’t that good of a team either, but they’ve managed to make enough plays to get three wins this year. This could be another shootout, but I doubt it with how bad these offenses are. Take the under.

Pick: Under
