Michigan vs Rutgers Game Preview

Why Rutgers Will Win

This team is really, really, really good when it comes to the turnover margin.

The offense isn’t anything sensational, and the O line is a problem, but the attack doesn’t make mistakes, and the D does a whole lot to give everyone a good situation.

The Scarlet Knights are third in the nation in turnover margin and No. 1 in giveaways – they haven’t turned the ball over yet. No, they haven’t played Alabama or Georgia – Temple, Syracuse, Delaware isn’t a murderers row – but they have yet to allow more than 261 yards, the pass defense isn’t getting hit deep, and they’re aggressive enough up front to bring the pressure all game long.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Michigan Will Win

Michigan isn’t Temple, Syracuse, or Delaware.

There’s a false narrative out there that the Wolverines haven’t played any good defenses yet.

Washington has a fantastic defense – it’s the offense that’s the problem. Western Michigan and Northern Illinois each have wins over Power Five programs – Pitt and Georgia Tech, respectively – and neither one could do a thing to slow down the Michigan attack.

This is a power running team with the flash to rip off big yards in chunks. It’s the No. 1 rushing attack in college football with 335 yards or more in every game averaging close to eight yards per carry.

Yes, the Rutgers defense is outstanding, but the passing game doesn’t take big shots down the field and the ground attack doesn’t have enough pop to make up for it.

And …

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan doesn’t have an issue so far with turnovers – there haven’t been any.

Last year’s team wasn’t all that awful in turnover margin and Rutgers pushed hard in a blast of a 48-42 Michigan win. This time around, though, Jim Harbaugh’s team has a far more efficient offense and a far, far better defense.

As long as this isn’t a game full of screw-ups, and if the Wolverines can be patient enough to not force anything to lead to any mistakes, they shouldn’t’ have any real issues.

Rutgers just doesn’t have the offense to keep up.

Why Rutgers Will Win

How can Rutgers stop the machine?

The Scarlet Knights are shooting well enough to at least keep pressing. They might not be doing much from three, but they’re able to get to the rim, they’re not awful on the offensive glass, and they’re good at generating easy points with the defense.

Rutgers comes up with a whole lot of steals, they’re great at pressuring the ball with an active style, and Michigan doesn’t. For all of the good things the Wolverines do, they don’t force a bunch of mistakes.

Why Michigan Will Win

Rutgers doesn’t score enough.

It’s able to hit from the field, and it’s able to hover around 72 points per game, but it doesn’t take advantage of its chances on the free throw line and it’s not nearly good enough from three.

Michigan needed a half to get back on track, and then it pulled away from Wisconsin with the offense blowing up with a terrific run.

No, the defense doesn’t come up with steals, but it’s aggressive and it’s able to come away with rebounds off the misses.

No, the offense doesn’t shoot a ton from three, but it makes them when it takes them. And …

What’s Going To Happen

Rutgers isn’t going to be effective enough from the field. It hasn’t hit 30% from three in four of the last five games and it’s not going to get the easy points like it normally does.

It’s the first home game for the Wolverines since January 19th, and they’ll play like it.

Why Michigan Will Win

So where’s the positive in this mess?

Injuries on the lines aren’t helping, and morale appears to be at rock-bottom – at least that’s the way the team played against Wisconsin – but there are still enough good parts there to turn this around fast.

There’s a chance Wisconsin is just that good, and there’s a chance last week’s disaster was just a one-off bad day.

The passing attack put up the yards against Michigan State and Indiana, there aren’t a slew of giveaways, and when the offense is able to throw, the downfield plays are there.

There’s no Rutgers deep passing attack, there are way too many penalties, and even though the team is better, it’s still just 1-3 and it took seven takeaways against Michigan State to make that happen.

Why Rutgers Will Win

The passing game might not do anything deep, but it’s okay when there aren’t a ton of mistakes.

Noah Vedral isn’t careful enough with the ball – he threw three picks against both Indiana and Illinois – but he also is able to be just enough of a baller to put up a few yards.

He’s still the starter after an up-and-down day against Illinois, and as long as he doesn’t throw picks, the team has a shot.

The Michigan offensive line isn’t a total mess, but there’s no running game for the Scarlet Knights to worry about. The Rutgers D is the best in the Big Ten at getting into the backfield and being a bother, and it’s able to overcome a slew of problems with pressure.

What’s Going To Happen

It seems like the two storied programs that were around when college football got started should have a long history of over 100 matchups beginning around the 1800s, but this is just the seventh meeting ever.

Rutgers won the first one back in 2014, and Michigan has absolutely dominated in the last five.

This might be a down Michigan team, but over the years it has a habit of flipping a switch after rough moments. Look for the offense to get a whole lot more physical, but if the team doesn’t match the energy or Rutgers … uh oh.

Michigan will win, but it’ll be one of those games that keeps all the program’s question marks going – particularly at quarterback.
