Bumps, Bruises and Bowouts

The injuries were getting lighter and lighter. And then Week 14 happened.

QB Lamar Jackson (BAL) – Knee
QB Jimmy Garoppolo – Broken Foot
QB Tua Tagovailoa (MIA) – Ankle
RB Aaron Jones (GB) – Shin
RB Kenneth Walker (SEA) – Ankle
WR David Bell (CLE) – Hand
WR Quez Watkins (PHI) – Shoulder
WR Courtland Sutton (DEN) – Hamstring
WR Chase Claypool (CHI) -Leg
WR Treylon Burks (TEN) – Concussion
WR Jaylen Waddle (MIA) – Leg
TE Hayden Hurst (CIN) – Calf
TE Isaiah Likely (BAL) – Shoulder

Chasing Ambulances

QB Lamar Jackson – Injured his knee but it is not season-ending. Jackson will undergo further testing on Monday. HC John Harbaugh said they should know how long Jackson will be out by Wednesday.

QB Jimmy Garoppolo – Broke his foot and is lost for the rest of the season. It was fortunate that Garoppolo was unable to find a trade partner and that he remained a 49er when Trey Lance was lost for the year. This time, the 49ers do not have a former NFL starter ready to step in.

QB Tua Tagovailoa – Was on the injury report with an ankle injury last week, and then missed the final drive after injuring his ankle again. He had started limping earlier in the game after being sacked and the final strip sack by Nick Bosa sent him to the sideline. Tagovailoa downplayed the injury after the game but more should be known by Wednesday.

RB Aaron Jones – Was limited in practices because of his shin last week but wasn’t listed on the final report. He injured the shin again during the Packers’ win over the Bears and missed time but returned later in the game. But he was ineffective (2.9 YPC) on his nine runs while AJ Dillon had his best game of the season. The Packers head onto their bye which should help Jones get his shin healthy again.

RB Kenneth Walker  – He injured his ankle in the second quarter of the win over the Rams and spend the rest of the day watching the game with a shoe off while resting his leg on the bench. HC Pete Carroll said that it wasn’t sprained but it was “jammed inside.” Carroll said that the severity of the injury was known yet, so we should have more word by Wednesday with the first injury report. DeeJay Dallas replaced him and also left with a sprained ankle.

WR Courtland Sutton – Injured his hamstring before recording a catch in the loss to the Ravens. He’ll be tested to determine the severity. His absence prompted Jerry Jeudy to play more despite just coming off an injury himself. Better word should be given by Wednesday when the Broncos discuss their injuries.

WR Treylon Burks – Was hit helmet to helmet when he caught his first NFL touchdown and somehow held onto the ball even after the crushing hit in the endzone. HC Mike Vrabel said, “I think he’s doing OK from what I’ve seen.” He’s likely to be held out next week unless he can spin through the concussion protocol quickly.

WR Jaylen Waddle – Left the loss to the 49ers with an unspecified leg injury during the middle of the second quarter. He returned in the third quarter but only caught one pass for nine yards in the second half. His practices should be telling this week as they prep to play at the Chargers.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

QB  Tyler Huntley (BAL) – The third-year backup stepped in after Lamar Jackson was injured and finished the win over the Broncos. He only threw for 187 yards and one interception but ran for 41 yards and a score on ten rushes. Jackson isn’t initially expected to be lost for the season, but he seems likely to sit out Week 14 at the Steelers, if not more.  Huntley took over last year when Jackson missed the final four games of the season. He’s very much a “Jackson-lite.” He’s a good runner with 40 to 70 yards when he’s played and an adequate passer that has only thrown scores in two of his six career starts. He’ll be a downgrade to the receivers but offer fantasy value with his rushing yardage.

QB Brock Purdy (SF) – The 49ers selected the Iowa State grad as Mr. Irrelevant as the final pick in the 2022 NFL draft. He was the only other quarterback on the roster when Jimmy Garoppolo was lost for the season with a broken foot. Purdy is the starter now, and the 49ers signed Josh Johnson from the Broncos’ practice squad as the new back-up. Purdy may be the first Mr. Irrelevant to throw a touchdown, but he was still the ninth-best quarterback coming out of college. That’s better than other undrafted starters – Tony Romo, Jeff Garcia, Kurt Warner, Warren Moon, etc. Purdy threw for 210 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.  He’ll face a tough Buccaneers defense this week, but his final three matchups of the fantasy season are the Seahawks, Commanders, and Raiders, who all sport below-average secondaries.

RB DeeJay Dallas / Tony Jones / Travis Homer (SEA) – If Kenneth Walker’s injured foot causes him to miss any games, this is the current set of running backs at the Seahawks’ disposal. Dallas was the initial replacement for Walker and ran for 37 yards on ten carries before injuring his own ankle. Tony Jones (7-14) handled the workload after that but was ineffective. Travis Homer missed the game on Sunday with a knee injury but has only served as  a very occasional third-down back. Homer caught a score on his two receptions for 45 yards in Week 12 versus the Raiders. Dallas would be the preferred replacement though he’s been just a marginal player for three years. Homer is another with only spot duty for the last three years. Dallas becomes fantasy relevant if he is healthy enough to play this week if Walker is unable to play. But there is no attractive fall back in Seattle.

QB Desmond Ridder (ATL) – Yes, he has not played a down after being the second quarterback drafted this year. And the Falcons have been adamant about the whole “Marcus Mariota is our quarterback” mantra. But the Falcons just lost their eighth game of the season and are at that point of the season where it takes a math whiz coupled with drug-induced optimism to think they can still make the playoffs. Mariota just to the visiting Steelers after completing 13-of-24 for 167 yards and one score with one touchdown. The calls to see a change are getting louder.

WR Christian Watson (GB) – The rookie that totaled ten catches for 88 yards and no scores through Week 9 just scored. Again. Twice. Over the last four games, Watson caught seven touchdowns and added a 46-yard rushing score this week as well. Whatever switch that flipped in his head apparently doesn’t turn off.

WR DJ Chark (DET) – He caught a touchdown on his two receptions for 16 yards in Week 12 and just posted five catches for 98 yards in the win over the Jaguars.  He’s starting to catch the attention of Jared Goff more. Jameson Williams also played on Sunday but failed to catch his only target. Perhaps he won’t immediately become a star that cuts into anyone else’s workload.

QB Deshaun Watson (CLE) – He finally made it back. A short two year-ish later, Watson started a game that was won by 13 points. That had almost nothing to do with him. Watson passed for just 131 yards and one interception against his old team and while they scored three touchdowns, none were by the offense. They returned a punt, returned an interception, and returned a fumble all for scores. Watson rushed for 21 yards on seven carries as the least productive runner for the Browns. Donovan Peoples-Jones (3-44) and Amari Cooper (4-40) were much less productive than they had been with Jacoby Brissett. It’s all a needed step to get  Watson back into shape but it’s going to take down a few receivers in the process right when fantasy playoffs are looming in the future.

RB Zonovan Knight (NYJ) – The undrafted fallback from Michael Carter shared the backfield with James Robinson (4-10) and Ty Johnson (1-3), but Knight was clearly the best option when he ran for 90 yards on 15 carries that included a 48-yard gain. Knight even added five receptions for 28 yards. Now the question is what happens with Michael Carter when he returns because Knight has already distanced himself from Robinson and Johnson.

RB Jordan Mason (SF) – Christian McCaffrey had his typical productive game against the Dolphins – 146 total yards, eight receptions, one touchdown. But this was the most recent “first time” that they were without Elijah Mitchell. Deebo Samuel (4-5) helped out though he was a game-time decision and played like it. Mason offered eight carries for 51 yards in relief of McCaffrey. That may be short of fantasy relevancy, but it is more than enough to want on a fantasy roster knowing that McCaffrey could get hurt.

RB Samaje Perine (CIN) – Popped up in the box score with 30 rushing yards and caught four passes for 52 yards when Joe Mixon left the Steelers game in Week 11. He ran for 58 yards and a score in Tennessee in Week 12 and added four catches for 35 yards. On Sunday, he was better still, running for 106 yards on 21 carries and catching six passes for 49 yards. Going to be hard to hand over all of the work to Mixon when he returns.

Huddle player of the week

Davante Adams – The Raiders trailed the Chargers 13-10 at the half and in the first five minutes of the third quarter, Davante Adams caught touchdowns of 45 and 31 yards. They were separated by just one Josh Jacob run. Adams ended with eight catches for 177 yards and two scores for his best game yet with the Raiders. He accounted for 177 of the 250 passing yards and remains every bit of the target sponge that he was in Green Bay.

RB Travis Etienne (JAX) – Foot
RB Elijah Mitchell (SF) – Knee
RB Michael Carter (NYJ) – Ankle
WR Chase Claypool (CHI) – Leg
WR Allen Robinson (LAR) – Foot
WR Darnell Mooney (CHI) – Ankle

Chasing Ambulances

RB Travis Etienne – Injured his foot and did not return to the game. HC Doug Pederson said that Etienne could have returned to the game but was held out just to play it safe. Etienne did not have crutches or a walking boot and appear to walk fine. He said he would be ready to go this week against the Lions.

RB Elijah Mitchell (SF) – Already missed most of the season with a sprained MCL and now he sprained the MCL in his other knee. He’ll get an MRI on Monday but the initial speculation is that he is not as bad as he was in Week 1. Notable too, Christian McCaffrey was dealing with “knee irritation” according to HC Kyle Shanahan.

RB Michael Carter – Injured his ankle in the win over the Bears and did not return.  He is due for an MRI on Monday to determine the severity but early speculation believes he will miss some time.

WR Chase Claypool – Had his leg buckle under him a bit during a catch and left the game. He’s a marginal fantasy player anyway, but he did lead the Bears receivers with two catches for 51 yards with Justin Fields out. More should be known after tests on Monday.

WR Allen Robinson – Injured his foot and will require season-ending surgery. It is an ending to a season even more disappointing than 2021.

WR Darnell Mooney – Injured his ankle in the loss to the Jets and it is believed to require season-ending surgery like Allen Robinson. It will be confirmed on Monday.

QB Aaron Rodgers – He was already playing with a fractured right thumb, and now Rodgers picked up an oblique injury. He underwent x-rays of his ribs that were inconclusive. He will have further testing on Monday.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

QB Sam Darnold (CAR) – Had his first start of the season and while he only threw for 164 yards and one score, he connected with D.J. Moore for 103 yards and a score on four receptions. He didn’t need to throw more than 19 passes, but still connected with Moore.

RB JaMycal Hasty (JAC) – With Travis Etienne out for nearly the entire game, Hasty stepped up to be the primary back and finished with just 28 yards on 12 carries versus the Ravens defense, but he added five receptions for 67 yards and a touchdown. Snoop Conner only ran three times for eleven yards. Etienne’s injury isn’t thought to be serious, but Hasty should be on the Etienne owner’s roster and if not, he’s worth stealing in case Etienne misses time.

WR Zay Jones (JAC) – Just set a career-high with 11 receptions for 145 yards in the win over the Ravens. Jones caught eight passes for 68 yards at the Chiefs in Week 11. He is trending up lately and is an option when the Jags must pass to stay in the game.

QB Kyle Allen (HOU) – He replaced Davis Mills but the results were similar. Allen passed for 215 yards and one score with two interceptions. Brandin Cooks (5-59) and Nico Collins (6-44) did see much improvement from the change in quarterback.

RB Dameon Pierce (HOU) – His production has trended downward badly in the last couple of games.  After Week 11 only produced 17 total yards, he was held to only 16 total yards at the Dolphins. The Commanders and Dolphins are not Top-5 defenses, but Pierce spent the last two weeks with anemic production.

Bears wideouts – Darnell Mooney is believed to have a serious and season-ending injury and Chase Claypool injured his leg in some undisclosed measure. Those are the two starting wideouts for the Bears who are currently missing Justin Fields as well. Dante Pettis (1-12) and Byron Pringle (2-12, TD) are the replacements and Pettis subs for Mooney who won’t be back. It is an offensive mess with all the injuries, but small opportunities exist.

RB Zonovan Knight (NYJ) – He was the practice squad player that they promoted up and then sat James Robinson on Sunday against the Bears. With Michael Carter leaving from an ankle injury, Knight went from just a name to be the primary running back for the Jets. He impressed. The ex-N.C. State running back was undrafted but did well enough in practices that HC Robert Saleh thought that the backfield could use a spark and gave him a shot that even Knight didn’t realize until Saturday. He set a Jets record when ran for 69 yards and caught three passes for 34 yards. Those 103 scrimmage yards are the most in a player’s debut in Jets history. To the waiver wire!

RB Ty Johnson (NYJ) – He only had nine carries over the first 11 weeks, but Johnson was pressed into duty with Michael Carter injured and James Robinson inactive. he ran for 62 yards on five carries that included a 32-yard rushing touchdown. He also caught a 16-yard pass.

QB Mike White (NYJ) – After slogging through the marginal play of Zach Wilson, the Jets opted for a change, finally, to White. All he did was throw for 315 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions and just one sack. White connected well with Garrett Wilson (5-95, 2 TD) and Elijah Moore (2-64, TD). HC Robert Saleh said that Wilson would stay out until he gets his confidence back. Watching White probably did not help.

WR Elijah Moore (NYJ) – It bears repeating. Moore has been a non-factor this year but he caught two passes in his first game with Mike White – a 42-yard completion and a 22-yard touchdown. It was just one game, but it was also the best game of the season for Moore who showed talent last year that hasn’t been seen in 2022 until Sunday.

RB Brian Robinson (WAS) – He not only produced his first 100-yard game, he showed up as a receiver as well. The rookie ran for 105 yards on 18 rushes in the win over the Falcons and added two catches for 20 yards and a touchdown. He only had four catches over his first seven games, so it is a positive development.

RB James Conner (ARI) – He ran for 120 yards in the loss to the Chargers and it was his first 100-yard game of the year. He was consistent with about half of that yardage prior to Week 12. Conner also caught three passes for 20 yards and his first receiving touchdown of the year.

WR Marquise Brown (ARI) – After spending five weeks on injured reserve, Brown returned and caught six passes for 46 yards in the loss to the Chargers. He was thrown a team-high eight targets and also led with six receptions. The schedule is not kind and he goes onto his bye this week, But Brown was cranking out 80-yard games and scored three times before his Week 6 injury.

QB Bryce Perkins / WR TuTu Atwell (LAR) – Maybe it will get better? The notion that what exists as the Rams now, compared to what just won the Super Bowl is mind-blowing. Matt Stafford has his second concussion in three weeks and that handled very carefully. It even caused speculation that Stafford could retire. All we can be sure of for now is that Perkins is not the answer at quarterback. To be fair, he’s playing without Cooper Kupp and Allen Robinson was just lost for the season. There could be opportunity for a receiver and Atwell is the direct replacement for Robinson. He caught a 62-yard touchdown in Week 11 but only managed two catches for 23 yards at the Chiefs on Sunday.

RB Jordan Mason (SF) – He hasn’t done much for the 49ers so far, but Elijah Mitchell injured his other MCL and may miss time. Christian McCaffrey was described as having a knee irritation by HC Kyle Shanahan who said that he “hoped it wasn’t anything.” Jeff Wilson is gone. Mason is next in line to play. Depending on Mitchell and potentially McCaffrey’s injuries, Mason could be a name to sneak back into the conversation. Mason ran for 25 yards on his five carries yesterday.

QB Jordan Love (GB) – Once Aaron Rodgers left in the third quarter with a painful oblique injury, Love entered the game and looked sharp completing 6-for-9 for 113 yards and one 62-yard touchdown to Christian Watson. Depending on how Rodgers’ scan goes on Monday, Love may be looking at more playing time.

Huddle player of the week

Josh Jacobs – To think how many times he was passed over in fantasy drafts. Jacobs has already been one of the best fantasy draft picks of 2022, and now his Week 12 production boosted him all the way up to be the No. 2 fantasy running back. Jacobs ran for an astounding 229 yards and two scores on 33 carries, plus caught six passes for 74 yards. That included the 86-yard run that ended overtime with a win for the visiting Raiders.

Chasing Ambulances

QB Matt Stafford – Was pulled from the game to test for a concussion and did not return. Bryce Perkins replaced him because John Wolford was out with a neck injury. This is the second concussion this season, so the Rams may be very cautious with their star quarterback. This downgrades the Rams fantasy starters even more.

QB Justin Fields – Injured his shoulder on the final drive and was carted to the locker room. He spoke to reporters after the game but was in obvious pain and admitted as much. He is initially considered day-to-day until more is known.

RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire – Suffered a high-ankle sprain, the second of his young career. He could  miss several weeks and strengthen the hold that Isiah Pacheco has on the starting job.

WR Kadarius Toney – Was limited to just one catch because his hamstring tightened up on him and they held him out. It wasn’t initially described as serious but is bothersome since his hamstrings have been an issue for the two years that he’s been in the NFL.

RB Jaylen Warren – Left the loss to the Bengals with a right hamstring strain.  Warren had worked his way into the lineup but could miss time. More should be known by Wednesday but any time he misses helps Najee Harris reassert his role in the backfield.

RB Joe Mixon – Left the win over the Steelers with a head injury and was ruled out, while Samaje Perine had a career day. The severity of the concussion will be determined on Monday.

WR Wan’Dale Robinson – Had a breakout game with nine catches for 100 yards but injured his knee and was ruled out.  He was in much pain after his leg twisted during his final catch. There is concern that it was a serious knee injury which would mean missing time and potentially many weeks. More will be known no later than the injury report on Wednesday.

WR Mike Williams – Missed four weeks with an ankle injury and had a beautiful 15-yard toe-tapper against the Chiefs in his first game back. And he hobbled back to the sideline with a reaggravation of the injury. An MRI on Monday should yield more information.

TE Kyle Pitts – Left the win over the Bears after taking a nasty low-helmet hit to his knee. Initial reports are that he did not tear any ligaments and just sprained the knee. He’s due to get an MRI on Monday to confirm the prognosis and recovery expectations.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

RB Ronald Jones (KC) –  The high-ankle sprain to Clyde Edwards-Helaire means that the Chiefs will likely move Ronald Jones to being active for game day. That’s no guarantee he even has a touch, but it gets him closer to the field and of interest if Isiah Pacheco or Jerick McKinnon are injured.

QB Zach Wilson (NYJ) – Ended the loss to the Patriots with 9-of-22 completions for 77 yards, and the offense combined for only two yards in the second half. HC Robert Saleh said after the game that Wilson is their quarterback and that they need “to make him better.” Whatever that process is does not work, and Wilson is killing their chance to win when defense and running the ball are not enough. No receiver caught more than two passes or gained more than 35 yards. Garrett Wilson’s rookie season is being wasted while waiting on a second-year quarterback to show that he belongs in the NFL.

RB Damien Harris (NE) – He started the win over the Jets and while Rhamondre Stevenson ended with 15 carries for 26 yards, Harris used his eight runs to gain 65 yards with several impressive chunk plays. Stevenson was also the lead receiver with six catches for 56 yards but Harris ended with 28 yards on two receptions for 93 total yards. It was Harris’ first playing time since Week 8.

WR TuTu Atwell (LAR) – First game without Cooper Kupp and Atwell netted his first NFL touchdown on a 62-yard bomb. That gives him two catches on the year including the 54-yard catch in Week 5. His 58-yard average catch is the highest in the NFL though his volume certainly lacks.

WR Allen Robinson (LAR) – His first game as the No. 1 wideout for the Rams resulted in four catches for 47 yards and a touchdown. It was in line with all his other games, and the chance that Matt Stafford could miss time with his second concussion would reset any expectations.

WR DJ Chark, Jameson Williams (DET) – Chark was activated from injured reserve and was active on Sunday though he failed to catch his lone target in the low-volume passing game at the Giants. Williams is looking at coming off injured reserve after this week and could be available for Week 13 against the Jaguars or Week 14 versus the Vikings. It’s all an indicator that the passing game should be changing in Detroit with two players being added.

RB Samaje Perine (CIN) – Joe Mixon was injured in the middle of the second quarter and Perine took over as the primary back. He ended with 11 runs for 30 yards at the Steelers but caught four passes for 52 yards and three touchdowns, second to only Tee Higgins. He’s a needed backup for the Mixon owner and could be the starter this week at the Titans if Mixon doesn’t pass the concussion protocol.

RB Najee Harris (PIT) – Jaylen Warren was making inroads to a bigger share of the backfield but Najee Harris ran for 99 yards on 20 carries in Week 10 against the Saints while Warren gained 37 yards on nine carries. On Sunday, Warren injured his hamstring and was forced from the game. Harris turned in 20 rushes for 90 yards and two scores against the Bengals and added four catches for 26 yards. He’s finally looked more in 2021 form for the last two weeks.

RB Isiah Pacheco (KC) – Was given the start in Week 10 when he rushed for 82 yards on 15 carries and again on Sunday when he gained 107 yards on 15 carries. Pacheco is the clear primary back and could see even more work with Clyde  Edwards-Helaire out with a hamstring issue.

WR Joshua Palmer (LAC) –  Mike Williams missed four weeks with an ankle injury and returned Sunday to catch a pass and re-injure himself. Palmer stepped up with a season-best eight catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns. He’s in line to start again at the Cardinals next week if Williams remains out.

Huddle player of the week

Tony Pollard  –  The Cowboys “No. 2” back turned in a career-best performance at the win in Minnesota over the Vikings. He rushed for 80 yards on 15 carries and added a team-high six catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns. There was plenty left over for Ezekiel Elliott who also scored twice, but Pollard’s speed and talent now have him with the bigger share of the Dallas workload.

WR Jerry Jeudy (DEN) – Ankle
WR JuJu Smith-Schuster (KC) – Concussion
WR Cooper Kupp (LAR) – Ankle
TE – Zack Ertz – Knee
TE Cole Kmet (CHI) – Leg

Chasing Ambulances

WR Cooper Kupp (LAR) – Had his ankle rolled up in the fourth quarter of the loss to the Cardinals. He hopped to the sideline and later limped to the locker room. HC Sean McVay said Kupp would be evaluated by the medical staff but the initial reports were not positive. A severe ankle injury of any kind would decimate what little offensive punch the Rams had.

WR Jerry Jeudy (DEN) – Fell down on the first play with an ankle injury and HC Nathaniel Hackett didn’t give any information. Jeudy was wearing a walking boot after the game and said after the game that he hoped it wasn’t a high-ankle sprain. His availability for next week’s Raiders matchup will be determined later in the week.

RB Leonard Fournette (TB) – He left in the third quarter with a hip pointer injury and was doubtful to return. The Buccaneers head onto their bye after the win in Germany, so solid news may not be known until Week 12.

RB Khalil Herbert (CHI) – He missed the end of the loss to the Lions and was quickly ruled out after injuring his hip on the final drive. More should be known on the Wednesday injury report.

WR JuJu Smith-Schuster (KC) – Was lit up by a helmet-to-helmet hit over the middle and appeared temporarily unconscious as he lay stiffly on the field. He has entered the concussion protocol but was able to walk off to the sidelines.

TE Cole Kmet (CHI) – Enjoyed a breakout performance in the loss to the Lions and left the field after colliding with a defender on the final drive. He said afterward that he didn’t believe it was serious and would get more detail on Monday.

TE Zach Ertz (ARI) – Was carted from the field with a knee injury and will have an MRI on Monday to determine the damage. The team still believes that the ACL is still intact but fears that he will miss multiple weeks.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

RB Rachaad White  (TB) – The rookie logged a season-best 105 yards on 22 carries for the first 100-yard rushing performance in Tampa Bay since Week 1. White started the game but shared with Leonard Fournette, who injured his hip. The Buccaneers head onto their bye, so Fournette has two weeks to heal, but White is already worth owning and would become a strong fantasy starter if Fournette misses time.

TE Cole Kmet (CHI) – After opening the year with zero catches for two weeks, Kmet scored five touchdowns over the last three games. He gained  a season-high 74 yards on four catches with two scores versus the Lions, and that was the second week with double touchdowns. His best games were at home, and Kmet now faces road trips to play the Falcons and Jets.

WR Kadarius Toney (KC) – Scored the first touchdown of his career on a six-yard pass that not only let him score, but according to NextGen stats, he was more open (21 yards) than any other receiver since 2016. Toney ended with four catches for 57 yards, and he tacked on 33 yards on two rushes. With JuJu Smith-Schuster nursing a concussion, Toney could see a bigger role this week when they host the Jaguars.

RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire (KC) – His usage has been sketchy in recent weeks though he scored in Week 7 on his six runs for 32 yards. On Sunday, he was never given a carry, failed to catch either of his two targets, and only played for five snaps. Isiah Pacheco ran a season-high 16 times for 82 yards. Jerick McKinnon was questionable to play with shoulder, knee and hamstring injuries and he still had one carry and six catches for 56 yards. If Pacheco holds the primary rusher role and McKinnon sticks to receiving, both become more reliable fantasy options if Edwards-Helaire remains on the sideline.

Miami backfield – Granted, it was at home and against a weak Cleveland rushing defense, but Jeff Wilson (17-119, TD) and Raheem Mostert (8-65, TD) were both devastating together and Mostert added four catches for 22 yards. The backfield looked better than it has in many years. The Dolphins head onto their bye and then host the Texans in Week 12 for more fun. They were so effective, that it could impact the need to pass.

WR Darius Slayton (NYG) – The Giants’ wideouts have been ineffective all season, but Slayton produced three consecutive games with 60+ yards and gained 95 yards on three receptions with a score in the win over the Texans. That included a 54-yard touchdown catch and sprint down the sideline. Next week, the Giants host the Lions.

RB Najee Harris, RB Jaylen Warren (PIT) – The Steelers placed emphasis on fixing their mediocre rushing game and intended to use the rookie Jaylen Warren more, even if it meant lowering the workload for Najee Harris. Against the Saints, both backs were effective. Harris rushed for a season-high 20 carries for 99 yards, while Warren handled a season-best nine carries for 37 yards and added three catches for 40 yards. The Steelers will consider their backfield as more of a committee ongoing and will host the Bengals next week. That will be a solid measurement since they played in Week 1 and the duo combined for only 13 carries for 30 yards.

WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine (TEN) – He’s been below fantasy relevance this season, and then when Malik Willis was the starting quarterback in Weeks 7 and 9, Westbrook-Ikhine failed to catch any passes. With Ryan Tannehill back, he caught five passes for 119 yards and two scores in the win over the Broncos. It was just one game, but the next three games are against the Packers, Bengals, and Eagles. Derrick Henry may not be enough to win those games.

QB Matt Ryan (IND) – Of the many recent changes for the Colts, the interim head coach Jeff Saturday said that Sam Ehlinger would remain the starting quarterback, which held true right up to game time when Matt Ryan reassumed the starting role. He threw for 222 yards and one score to Parris Campbell in the fourth quarter for the winning margin. He also ran in a touchdown and rushed for a career-high 39 yards on just one scramble. The Raiders had not prepared for him, but the the Eagles this week likely will.

RB Tony Pollard (DAL) – Ezekiel Elliott missed the last two games, and Pollard has been terrific taking the heavier load. He ran for 131 yards and three scores in Week 8 on the visiting Bears. On Sunday, he gained 115 yards and one score on 22 rushes in the loss at the Packers. Elliott hasn’t rushed for 100 yards since Week 5 of 2021. Pollard has two in the last two weeks.

WR Christian Watson (GB) – The rookie totaled ten catches for 88 yards over the six games he had played. So it was unanticipated when he caught a career-best four passes in Week 10. And they went for 58 yards (touchdown), 39 yards (touchdown), three yards, and seven yards (touchdown). He was a major contributor to the Packers ending their five-game losing streak and beating the Cowboys. He’ll have another chance to shine this week against the visiting Titans.

San Francisco backfield – In an NFL sense, the 49ers backfield and overall offense is something to fear as it is stocked with weapons and in a system that loves to tinker, mix-and-match, and attack an opponent from all angles. In a fantasy football sense, this may not be a great thing.

The return of Deebo Samuel and Elijah Mitchell on Sunday meant that all of the weapons were healthy and present for the first time. But there are so many players that they will continue to erode each others production and likely make it less consistent for each player. Deebo Samuel was paid $71 million for three years but his return only produced four runs for 27 yards and two catches for 24 yards. Brandin Aiyuk caught six passes for 84 yards. George Kittle had one catch for 21 yards.

Christian McCaffrey ran 14 times for 38 yards and a score, plus caught four passes for 39 yards. But Elijah Mitchell was given 18 carries for 89 yards. When was the last time that McCaffrey wasn’t the primary ball carrier for his team? And one of the two scores was on a run by Jimmy Garoppolo. The 49ers head to Arizona this week, and the work distribution will be worth noting. That’s a  lot of hands in that pie.

Huddle player of the week

Justin Fields – He was the highest-scoring quarterback last week. At home against the Lions, Fields ran for 147 yards and two touchdowns, plus passed for 167 yards and two more touchdowns. He took the lead in the fourth quarter when he ran for a 67-yard touchdown while looking a lot like Michael Vick with his speed. As good as Fields has been recently, it is mind-warping to think his rookie season was devoted to forcing him to throw from the pocket.

Chasing Ambulances

There were six teams on their bye, but like last week, the list is delightfully small. They say that by midseason, you’ve either been injured already or learned to play through it.

RB Aaron Jones (GB) – Left the loss to the Lions with an ankle injury and wore a boot after the game. Jones jogged back to the locker room and said that he was “a little sore” and did not think it was serious. X-rays were negative, so the hope is that he’ll be able to play this week against the Cowboys.

WR Romeo Doubs (GB) – Injured his ankle and was ruled out of the loss to the Lions. He wore a walking boot and used crutches after the game. There is concern that it may be serious enough that he misses more playing time. Monday tests will confirm the diagnosis. The Packers can ill-afford to lose any of their receivers.

TE Evan Engram (JAC) – Injured his back during the win over the Raiders and did not return to the game. He’ll be evaluated on Monday. Dan Arnold would move up to the starting spot if Engram misses any time.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

WR Josh Palmer (LAC) – The Chargers were without Mike Williams and Keenan Allen, so Palmer (8-106) took the primary role  and delivered against the Falcons. His ten targets led the Chargers.

WR Cole Kmet (CHI) – While he was a disappointment through Week 7, the talented tight end scored on his two catches for 11 yards in Week 8. Against the Dolphins, Kmet had a career-best game with five catches for 41 yards and two touchdowns. He was second only to Darnell Mooney in targets.

WR Chase Claypool (CHI) – His first game with the Bears only resulted in two catches for 13 yards, but he was thrown six passes in his debut. The Bears are intent on getting him involved.

QB Baker Mayfield (CAR) – P.J. Walker got the hook at halftime when he only totaled nine yards and two interceptions as a passer. Mayfield entered the game and threw for 155 yards and two scores but the Bengals already led 35-0 and may have let up in the second half. Mayfield threw scores to Terrace Marshall (3-52) and Tommy Tremble (2-11, TD), but D.J. Moore only managed two catches for 24 yards. But he kept his helmet on after both receptions. No word yet on of the change was game-situation or something more.

WR Garrett Wilson (NYJ) – The rookie’s production took a nosedive with Zach Wilson under center, but he caught six passes for 115 yards in Week 8 versus the Pats. On Sunday, he led the Jets with eight catches for 92 yards. He’s not only connecting now with Wilson, but no other Jet gained more than 16 receiving yards in the win over the Bills. Wilson is dominating the receivers.

RB Jeff Wilson (MIA) – He already knew the offense, so Wilson’s first game after being traded saw him lead the backfield with nine runs for 51 yards and he added three catches for 12 yards and a touchdown. The move is already proving a fortunate career move. Raheem Mostert ran for 26 yards and a score on his nine rushes but had no receptions. The Dolphins now have the same committee the 49ers used two years ago.

TE T.J. Hockenson (MIN) – In his first game as a Viking, Hockenson caught all nine targets for 70 yards in the win over the Commanders.  That was the second-highest catch total of his career. He was second only to Justin Jefferson in catches and yards. His nine catches led the team. Adam Thielen and Dalvin Cook had marginal games as receivers, so Hockenson’s workload will be interesting for the next few weeks.

TE Noah Fant (SEA) – He was part of the trade that sent Russell Wilson to the Broncos, and Fant played a minor role for the first half of the season. Against the Cardinals, he led the team with five receptions for 96 yards that included a 51-yard reception.

WR Ronald Moore (ARI) – The second-year wideout looks to be making a move towards breaking out with 92 yards and a score in Week 8, and then a team-high eight receptions for 69 yards in the loss to the Seahawks.  Moore’s ten targets paced the team and were double the five DeAndre Hopkins received.

Rams backfield – Cam Akers returned to the field and that meant that the Rams would rely on a three-man committee to produce their mediocre output. Darrell Henderson (12-56) was the only effective runner while Akers (5-3) and Malcolm Brown (2-9) added nothing.

TE Cade Otton (TB) – The promising rookie already had a couple of games with four catches or more. In the win over the Rams, he led the Buccaneers with five catches for 68 yards and caught the game-winning touchdown with only nine seconds left to play.

RB Raheem Blackshear (CAR) – The Panthers were badly beaten by the Bengals and D’Onta Foreman was limited to only 21 total yards.  Blackshear is the kick returner, but they let him play in the second half. He ended up second on the team with four catches for 40 yards and he ran in a fourth-quarter touchdown on his five carries for 13 yards. It was almost entirely during trash time, but these Panthers appear likely to be trailing badly in future games as well. He’s not worth grabbing, but worth tracking in case Foreman is injured. Blackshear was the No. 10 fantasy back for Week 10.

WR Kadarius Toney (KC) – The ex-Giant caught the first pass that Patrick Mahomes threw in the Sunday night game. But he only fielded one more pass and ended with 12 yards. He never saw any more action after the first quarter. It was a small step but at least Toney was able to play and looked healthy.

QB Justin Fields (CHI) – The passing yardage may remain pedestrian and limited, but Fields ended Week 9 as the highest-scoring fantasy quarterback. He passed for 123 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 178 yards and a touchdown on 15 rushes in the loss to the Seahawks. It was a career mark in rushing yards and the third time in the last four weeks that he gained at least 80 yards as a runner.  It was just as encouraging about his development that he threw scores to Darnell Mooney and Cole Kmet. And this week, the Bears host the Lions.

Huddle player of the week

Joe Mixon – He’s disappointed fantasy drafters who hoped to latch on to the scoring machine of 2021. And now they have, it just all came in one game instead of being spread out. Mixon was simply unstoppable with 22 runs for 153 yards and four touchdowns, plus four receptions for 58 yards and a fifth score in the win over the Panthers. That’s 51.1 fantasy points and a career game for Mixon.

Salute!
