Why Utah Will Win

The Utes will be doing a little scoreboard watching.

They need Oregon to lose to Oregon State – that starts about 90 minutes before this starts – and then it gets potentially weird if Washington beats Washington State later that night.

First, Utah has to take care of business and roll through a Colorado team about to put a merciful end to its season.

The Buffs are dead last in the nation against the run. That’s a big, BIG problem against the Utah offensive line.

The Utes average over 200 yards per game on the ground and are 6-1 when averaging over 4.5 yards per carry – the one loss coming in the final seconds against Florida.

Colorado allowed 4.5 yards per carry or more in every game but two. It’s about to get hammered on hard, but …

Why Colorado Will Win

Utah struggles on the road.

It’s been a disastrous season, and it would be a heavy lift to get past a team good enough to potentially play for the Pac-12 Championship, but there’s Salt Lake City Utah and there’s everywhere else Utah.

Salt Lake City Utah is 6-0, beat USC, and totally destroyed everyone else. Everywhere else Utah is 2-3 and had to fight to get past Washington State.

For Colorado, it starts with not turning the ball over. The offense might struggle to move the chains, but the multiple turnovers every game are the killer.

The offensive line hasn’t been awful. It has to keep the Utes out of the backfield, the running game has to be decent, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Dead last in the nation in scoring defense. Dead last in the nation in sacks. Dead last in the nation against the run. Dead last in the nation in third down defense. Second-to-last in the nation in total defense.

It’s been a rough run for Colorado. It’s about to add to that total of 232.5 rushing yards per game allowed as Utah starts running, keeps running, and doesn’t stop.

Utah vs Colorado Game Preview

Why Colorado Will Win

This is Colorado’s bowl game, and it’s just good enough to come up with something special considering this doesn’t matter to the home side.

Oh sure, Utah would love to win, it wants to come up with something special on Senior Day, and it certainly doesn’t want to lose its momentum after destroying Oregon and the Pac-12 last week, but again, it doesn’t make a difference whether or not it wins.

The Utes have clinched the South and it’s off to the Pac-12 Championship next week no matter what. They’re not in the College Football Playoff mix, so they really can rest everyone to be ready to roll for the game that would mean the Rose Bowl with a win.

Colorado hasn’t been all that bad. It was able to get by a Washington that barely showed up after all of its drama, and the ground game was great in the runner over Oregon State.

There aren’t any turnovers, the O is just starting to grind on the ground, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Utah Will Win

Assuming the Utes really do care – they’re going to say they do, but there’s no way they can maintain the emotion of last week’s 38-7 win over Oregon – run, run run.

The powered through UCLA for close to 300 yards, they ran over Stanford for 441, and they ripped apart Oregon for over 200.

The Colorado defense doesn’t get into the backfield, the offense doesn’t move the chains and control the clock, and even if this is a go-through-the-motions game, it should still be enough to get by as long as the lines can control the game from the start.

What’s Going To Happen

Utah will attempt to make a statement, but it’s not going to wok.

Oh it’ll win – it’ll get out to a good lead on its first few drives – but the intensity will slip. Colorado will keep fighting to make this a bit more interesting than it should be, but again, it’s going to be about momentum.

Think Arizona. Utah wasn’t great against the lowly Wildcats, but they were still able to get by with an unfocused 38-29 win. Colorado will be plucky enough to lose without getting destroyed.

Why Colorado Will Win

It’s the part of the College Football Playoff rankings that people don’t like to talk about at parties …

You have as many wins over teams currently ranked in the CFP top 25 as Utah does.

That goes for Alabama, too, by the way.

Yes, Utah has been fantastic. Yes, the defense is incredible. Yes, the offense is brutally efficient and playing as well as any in college football right now …

Against a whole slew of mediocre teams.

Colorado has picked itself up off the mat after a five-game losing streak to beat Stanford and Washington to get into a position to go bowling.

The team is playing hard for head coach Mel Tucker. QB Steven Montez and the passing game are good enough to challenge a Ute secondary that hasn’t bee pressed for weeks, and more than anything else, ALL of the pressure is on the other side of the field.

Yeah, the Buffs are trying to get bowl eligible, but it’s a beauty contest right now, and Utah can’t just win, it has to be impressive doing it. Colorado has the firepower to make this – at the very least – look cosmetically close.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Utah Will Win

Let’s just forget about Colorado running the ball.

The Buff ground attack isn’t bad. It’s getting decent production out of a few nice young backs, there are enough good moments from the offensive line to complement what Montez and the passing game can do, and the O was able to blast away for over 200 yards against the terrific Washington defensive front.

Utah’s D line is a whole other animal.

The Utes gave up 111 rushing yards to Arizona State, and that’s been it. No one else has cracked the 95 yard mark. Bradlee Anae and the rest of the Ute defensive front are taking turns hanging out behind the line, but it’s the overall scheme and play of the nation’s leading run defense that’s triggering everything else.

There are way too many penalties, but other than that, Utah doesn’t screw up. There aren’t a slew of bad turnovers, the defense isn’t breaking too often even when it does bend, and best of all right now, the team appears to be playing with as much confidence as any outside of Columbus.

That’s what happens when you allow seven points or fewer five of your last six games.

What’s Going To Happen

Colorado will move the ball a bit on the Utes.

Montez will connect on just enough throws to keep the chains moving and go on a few nice drives, and then …

The Utah defense will happen.

The Utes will get their normal offensive production out of the stars in the backfield – Zack Moss will come up with his fifth-straight 100-yard game – Tyler Huntley will connect on 75% of his throws, and the tone will be set for the Pac-12 Championship.
