Post Game Recap: Texas A&M gets back in the win column with a 79-52 victory over HCU

Hayden Hefner hits a career high as he leads the Aggies past the HCU Huskies in a lopsided victory

Texas A&M (8-3) hosted the HCU Huskies (2-9) on Friday night at Reed Arena and came out with a decisive win to end their two-game skid.

Both teams had a hard time at the beginning of the game making a bucket not allowing any squad to take a dominant lead. Then, finally, after about 10 minutes in, the Aggies ratcheted up the defense, and Hayden Hefner knocked down seven straight points for a double-digit lead at 19-9.

Right when it looked as if A&M was going to blow the game wide open, HCU had some timely buckets as the Aggie committed a few senseless turnovers. The shooting woes continued for the Maroon & White, but they were able to slash to the basket late in the half for some shots from the charity stripe going 15-20.

The star of the opening 20 minutes was Hefner, who led the team with 13 points, and some smothering defense allowed them to go on an 18-3 run while Wade Taylor IV spent most of the half on the bench. The Aggies held HCU to under 27% shooting, taking a 40-21 lead into the locker room.

The second half started with more of the same, with Hefner hitting a few early shots and Andersson Garcia being a monster on the glass, giving the Aggies multiple second-chance points.

Garcia and Hefner guided A&M to an easy victory as both Aggies hit career numbers. Even though they shot poorly, their ability to get to the free-throw line and their signature rebounding really helped extend the lead to 20+. The reserves started to shuffle in and out during the remaining five minutes as they spent some clock working on some offensive sets.

The only thing that didn’t slow down was the defense of A&M as the Huskies were limited to 33% shooting and grabbed a massive 22 offensive rebounds. Hefner led all scorers with a career-high 24 points on very efficient shooting, while Garcia barely missed out on a double-double and logged 9 points and 19 rebounds. Taylor had a quiet 10 points, but Buzz Williams opted to rest him most of the game.

With the win, A&M snapped a two-game winning streak and got numerous bench players in the game during the 79-62 victory over the HCU Huskies.

Below are the Aggie critical contributors from the game:

Hayden Hefner:  24 points (career-high)

Andersson Garcia:  9 points / 19 rebounds (career-high)

Jace Carter:  10 points / 12 rebounds

NOTE: Tyrece Radford did not suit up for the game

Texas A&M will return home for their final non-conference game against Prairie View A&M on Dec.30 at 7:00 PM CST.

FSU Board of Trustees likely to discuss bolting from the ACC on Friday

Well this makes things interesting.

It appears that the next domino in conference realignment is about to fall. The Florida State University Board of Trustees has called a virtual meeting for Friday at 10 a.m. ET.

The expectation is that the BOT will approve a legal filing in their bid to leave the ACC. It is public knowledge that leadership at the university has been very unhappy with the conference. Given how much revenue FSU generates, they believe they deserve a bigger piece of the pie. They aren’t the only ones as Clemson is another team unhappy with the ACC.

The exit from the ACC will be a costly one. In August, the Associated Press reported that the fee is roughly three times the annual revenue which equates to about $120 million. In the 2021-22 year, the conference paid out roughly $39 million per school.

Florida State President Rick McCullough called for action unless there is “radical change to revenue distribution.”

“We are not satisfied with our current situation,” the FSU president said. “We love the ACC and our partners at ESPN. Our goal would be to stay in the ACC, but staying in the ACC under the current situation is hard for us to figure out how to remain competitive unless there were a major change in the revenue distribution. That has not happened.”

When the Seminoles were left out of the College Football Playoff, this felt like the most likely solution in their minds. That was just another log thrown on the “let’s get out of the ACC” fire.

The ACC is set to welcome California, SMU, and Stanford to the conference in time for the 2024 season. Should FSU make a move from the ACC, we will likely see more action from Clemson, Miami, and North Carolina.

2024 4-star OL Papa Ahfua officially signs with Texas A&M

Elko gets good news as 4-star OL Papa Ahfua signs on the dotted line

It’s flip season and with a new head coach at the helm with an incomplete staff, everyone is on edge during National Early Signing Day to see if commits will stick or sign elsewhere.

I collective sigh of relief happens every time a commit stays with their commitment and the Aggie offensive line is officially bringing in some reinforcements. Isendre Ahfua better known as “Papa” put pen to paper on early signing day marking the second OL commit in the Elko era.

The 6-4, 310-pound tackle has been committed since August and chose the Aggie over Miami, Alabama, Auburn, and Oregon. 247 Sports has him projected as a Power – starter with the ability to play multiple positions.

Elko is off to a great start retaining two talented offensive lineman and we look forward to seeing who signs next.

Photos: Here are some of the best photos from Saturday’s game against the Houston Cougars

Texas A&M (7-3) put up a strong second-half fight to get back in the game late against the Houston Cougars (11-0) on Saturday afternoon but ultimately lost 70-66 at the Toyota Center.

Coach Buzz acknowledged that the change in defense at the end might have tipped their hand a little bit, but he will always believe in his team.

“We played a lot bigger today in hopes we could participate in the physicality of the game and have a chance on the glass. Because of that, we really can’t disguise who is going to shoot the ball for us. Some of our late-game execution was pretty good, to be honest.”

With their fourth loss early in the season, the Aggies still look like a competitive team, battling perhaps the best team in college basketball down to the final possession.

Texas A&M will return to Reed Arena next Friday to host HCU at 7:00 PM CST.

Below, you can check out some of the best Saturday game photos.

Temporary restraining order issued will allow multi-transfer athletes to be immediately eligible

Well this will change things for the immediate future.

According to Justin Williams of The Athletic, Judge John Preston Bailey has issued a temporary restraining order in regards to athletes seeking multi-transfer waivers.

This TRO will remain in effect over the next 14 days and the next hearing will come two days after Christmas when the restraining order period comes to a close.

As of now, athletes who have transferred multiple times would be immediately eligible to participate. This is expected to become very messy over the next several weeks and potentially the next several months while this plays out in court.

Under current rules, athletes are permitted to transfer once without the need for a waiver. Multi-transfer athletes require a waiver to be eligible unless they are graduate transfers, who are immediately eligible.

College Sports Wire and the College Wire Network will continue to monitor the situation in regards to this legal proceeding and provide updates as they are made available.
