Tennessee vs Ball State Game Preview

Why Ball State Will Win

Is the Tennessee defense any better than the version that couldn’t do anything against decent passing games, and is the offensive line any stronger in pass protection?

The Vol front five was outstanding for the ground game, but it gave up a ton of sacks and way too many pressures. Ball State might not have the bulk up front, but the front seven can move and should be able to get into the backfield.

In a perfect world, the Cardinal running game works right away, the line that was good in pass protection allows QB John Paddock time to keep the chains moving, and the team finds a way to take advantage of the time of possession advantage.

Tennessee won’t care how long it has the ball for – Ball State has to somehow work the clock and shorten the game. However …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Tennessee Will Win

Ball State isn’t big on the whole ball control thing, either.

Tennessee might have been the worst in the nation in time of possession, but Ball State wasn’t terribly far behind, holding the ball for just 27:31 per game.

The Cardinal offense is good at dinking and dunking, but it’s not going to crank up the downfield plays, even against the potentially leaky Volunteer secondary.

There’s going to be a big problem for the visitors if Tennessee can get out to a hot start.

The third down stops aren’t going to be there on a regular basis, and the Ball State attack doesn’t have the parts to keep up in a firefight. As long as Vol QB Hendon Hooker gets a little bit of time, he should go off.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

Ball State won’t be a total pushover, but this should be target practice for the Tennessee offense.

Hooker will be sharp on the first few drives, there will be a decent balance to the offense, and Ball State won’t be able to capitalize on enough decent drives to keep up.

Ball State needs to keep this in the high-20s-low 30s, and the Vols won’t oblige.

UCF vs South Carolina State Game Preview

Why South Carolina State Will Win

This is a very, very, dangerous Bulldog team that’s as strongly coached as anyone on the UCF slate.

Head coach Buddy Pough has another strong team that’s going to be in the mix for the MEAC title – QB Corey Fields, RB Kendrell Flowers, and WRs Shaquan Davis and Will Vereen are all dangerous – the defense has the front that can get into the backfield and the playmakers to take the ball away.

This should be an improved UCF team, but it’s filling in some spots up front, it needs to transfers to play big roles on a defense that needs to step up at linebacker, and …

Why UCF Will Win

UCF’s running game is going to be a problem.

The offensive front that wasn’t great in pass protection is build to blast away, and it has a healthy and ready-to-roll Isaiah Bowser at running back and Ole Miss transfer John Rhys Plumlee who can move.

The Knights aren’t going to take a ton of big chances here. Yes, South Carolina State will be solid this year on the defensive front, but it should wear down a bit as the game goes on.

On the other side, be shocked if the UCF defense that was decent last year isn’t a whole lot better. Yes, it’s relying on new parts to improve and add depth, but it won’t get pushed too much. The Bulldog O has talent, but it’s going to need to take a slew of chances to get things moving deep.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

South Carolina State will bring the effort, and it’s going to be a tough out, but UCF will take over up front with a 200-yard rushing day. The ground game will take over after the D comes up with a whole slew of third down stops.

There will be a mid-game lull that allows the Bulldogs to make a little noise, but UCF will pull away in the fourth quarter to make the final score look worse than the game will be – at least for about 2.5 quarters.

Missouri vs Louisiana Tech Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

Here comes the offense.

New head coach Sonny Cumbie will get hs offense to throw and throw some more – former TCU transfer Matthew Downing and Texas Tech transfer Parker McNeil are still battling for the high-profile starting quarterback gig – with the receiving corps good enough to give the Tiger secondary problems.

The Louisiana Tech offensive line spent last year rebuilding, and now the payoff should come with a slew of potential Conference USA all-stars up front. Missouri has the talent on defense, but it has to be far better than the 2021 version. However …

Week 1 Expert Picks, Thursday & Friday

Why Missouri Will Win

The Louisiana Tech defense has a long, long way to go to be just okay.

The offense will be fine. It might take a little bit – the Mizzou pass rush and defensive front should be a problem for the Bulldogs – but other side of the ball will be all about the pass rush.

The new Louisiana Tech coaching staff will turn everyone loose to get into the backfield, and that means the big plays should be there for the taking. As long as QB Brady Cook gets a little bit of time, he’s got the dangerous playmakers who should get down the field.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

Louisiana Tech has the parts and experience in place to make this interesting. If the passing game clicks right away, look out.

This might not be the close call the Bulldog 35-34 loss to Mississippi State game to open last year turned out to be, but everyone will be entertained.

The Mizzou lines should be able to do enough to force a win with two good scoring drives in the second half and two big defensive stops, but it’s going to be more of a fight than the SEC side might like.

FIU vs Bryant Game Preview

Why Bryant Will Win

FIU is totally starting over, but … it’s close.

New head coach Mike MacIntyre has to build up a team that was among the worst in college football in all phases, with the biggest problem for a game like this the turnover margin.

The Panthers had a massive problem giving the ball away – and didn’t do enough on D to make up for it – and the Bulldogs have to keep that all going.

Bryant was among the best FCS teams last season in turnover margin, the run defense was strong, and there was a good balance to the attack around QB Zevi Eckhaus and RB Fabrice Mukendi. The FIU lines are going to need a bit to come together.

Why FIU Will Win

The coaching will be stronger out of the gate, the transfers are coming in to beef up the options and the depth, and the offense should be far better right away.

Getting Duke transfer Gunnar Holmberg at quarterback is a good start, and the receiving corps should be a strength thanks to the new parts. Lexington Joseph is a good back to work around if the O line can do be just okay.

Bryant will do a lot of things right this season, but it’s not going to crank up the downfield passing attack – it’ll be more careful than explosive. If the FIU defense can force a slew of third-and-longs, it should get the job done.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

FIU will match its 2021 win total after Week 1.

Bryant will be steady, and again, the turnovers will play a big role – FIU can NOT be -2 or worse in this – but the offense will take over early, the defense will settle in after halftime, and a relatively tight game will bust open early in the fourth quarter.

Northern Illinois vs Eastern Illinois Game Preview

Why Eastern Illinois Will Win

The Panther defense returns enough talent to be much, much better.

Depending on the alignment, 11 starters should return on a D that was terrific at coming up with tackles for loss, was second in the Ohio Valley Conference in total defense, and did a nice job of taking the ball away.

LB Colin Bohanek is a playmaker, the all-star combination of Tim Varga and Jordan Miles will make plenty of things happen up front, and …

Why Northern Illinois Will Win

Eastern Illinois is all but starting over in several ways under new head coach Chris Wilkerson.

The offense that struggled throughout the 1-10 season only returns four starters, it has to find a way to keep the turnovers to a minimum and the chains moving, and that defense that has a ton of experience doesn’t have the bulk to hold up against the Northern Illinois ground game.

The Huskies have one of the best offensive fronts in the MAC, veteran QB Rocky Lombardi and the passing game should have time to work, and the defense that still needs time and seasoning after a rough two years should be able to use this as a true tune-up.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

Northern Illinois will come up with enough offensive balance throughout to steadily keep pulling away.

Eastern Illinois has to win the turnover margin by at last three, it needs to find something steady on offense that works, and … that’s not happening.

This will be the game that gives NIU fans hope that the youth movement of last year on defense will payoff big.

Fresno State vs Cal Poly Game Preview

Why Cal Poly Will Win

The Mustangs have to get the pass rush going.

There wasn’t a whole lot that went right last season, but there were just enough defensive plays behind the line to matter. They might not generate a ton of sacks, but they can pressure the Fresno State backfield enough to force mistakes.

The Bulldogs might have come up with a big offensive season, but they also got hit with too many penalties and turned the ball over a bit too often. Cal Poly needs as many breaks as possible because …

Week 1 Expert Picks, Thursday & Friday

Why Fresno State Will Win

The Mustangs aren’t going to get enough going offensively to keep up.

They might have a slew of parts back, but the 2021 Cal Poly O couldn’t run a lick, threw way too many interceptions, and averaged just 15.4 points per game.

It might take a little while for Fresno State to get up to speed, Cal Poly won’t come up with the defensive stops needed to change the game. As long as Bulldog QB Jake Haener gets a little bit of time, he’ll keep the chains moving.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a light scrimmage for Fresno State in the return of head coach Jeff Tedford after a few years away from the program.

With Oregon State and at USC up next, the Bulldogs need to get the timing down, the pass rush should get a chance to shine against a leaky Cal Poly line, and the final score will be whatever Tedford wants it to be.

It might not be the 63-10 wipeout of last year, but the Mustangs won’t force enough mistakes to keep this too much closer.

Wake Forest vs VMI Game Preview

Why VMI Will Win

How much has the Wake Forest defense improved?

It struggled last year – to be nice – against the teams that could run, and VMI will try to get its ground game going early with leading rusher Korey Bridy back working behind a decent front five.

QB Seth Morgan threw too many picks, but he did a good job of keeping the chains moving. This might not be a high-octane powerhouse of an attack, but the balance will be there, the defense should get a few good plays out of a secondary coming off a solid 2021, and …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Wake Forest Will Win

The VMI pass rush won’t be there, and that’s going to quickly turn into a big, big problem.

The Demon Deacons need this game to break in QB Michael Griffis – with star Sam Hartman out indefinitely with a non-football related medical condition – and he should get plenty of time to work. The O will keep going fast, it’ll keep the Keydets on their heels, and there’s a good chance it puts this away after a few drives if everything works right.

As decent as the VMI offense will be this season, it’s going to dominate the clock. Against Wake Forest, taking advantage of the time of possession battle is a must, but that’s not happening here.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

Hartman is a star for the attack, but the Wake Forest offense has the parts to keep on moving until he gets back.

The Demon Deacons will win on the lines, they’ll be balanced when they need to be, and they won’t take any big chances – they won’t need to.

VMI will come up with a few scoring drives, but not nearly enough of them to keep up with the pace Wake Forest will set right away.

Minnesota vs New Mexico State Game Preview

Why New Mexico State Will Win

The Aggies already have a warm-up game under their belt.

They weren’t bad in the 23-12 loss to Nevada – the defense did a nice job of holding up, was solid against the Wolf Pack passing game – there wasn’t anything happening deep – and was in it until late.

Former Gopher head coach Jerry Kill is facing his old program, and his team will try to replace the same style with a tough running game that controls the clock. That didn’t work against Nevada, but that’s still the goal.

Minnesota has no problem grinding games down a bit, and that might fit into New Mexico State’s plan to make this a battle.

Minnesota’s defense didn’t come up with enough plays in the backfield last season, but …

Week 1 Expert Picks, Thursday & Friday

Why Minnesota Will Win

The Gophers should be a rock against the run.

A few transfers are helping out the established starters, and it should all work against a New Mexico State offense that’s going to try pounding away, but will struggle to get too much going. The Aggies managed just 3.4 yards per carry against Nevada, and they’re not going to have the passing attack to open it up deep.

The focus will be on the other side and the return of RB Mohamad Ibrahim from a torn Achilles tendon. He and Trey Potts should be able to rumble at will as the revamped offensive line gets time to jell.

New Mexico State’s front three should be better, but it has a long way to go after allowing close to 200 rushing yards per game. It gave up 170 yards to the 1-2 punt of Toa Tau and Devonte Lee, and now it’s about to get hit a whole lot harder.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

Will Minnesota show up?

It almost always wins the layup non-conference games under PJ Fleck – the gack against Bowling Green last season was the exception – but it has a weird way of needing to work WAY too hard in games that should be easy.

It struggled against Miami University last year, had to push to get by South Dakota State, Fresno State, and Georgia Southern in 2019, and …

It beat New Mexico State 48-10 in 2018. There won’t be a problem here with the balanced offense taking over after two drives.

Toledo vs LIU Game Preview

Why LIU Will Win

The Sharks will be careful with the ball.

Toledo led the nation in fewest turnovers – they only gave it away seven times – and isn’t likely to give away a slew of easy chances. It’s going to be a hard enough game for LIU, and forget about it if it’s -2 or worse in turnover margin.

The offense can work around the running of Jonathan DeBique to try controlling the clock a bit. Toledo’s defense might have been among the best in the MAC last year – and should be strong again – but time of possession didn’t matter to the team. It’s up to the Shark offense to work the clock, shorten the game, and keep the ball for at least 35 minutes.

But …

Why Toledo Will Win

In theory the Sharks will control the ball and slow things down, but they won’t be good enough on third downs to make that happen.

LIU isn’t going to do much to push the ball down the field, and the O in general will have a hard time consistently moving the ball.

Toledo’s offense should be able to treat this as a live scrimmage.

It needs to get a slew of new receivers in sync with QB Dequan Finn, and O line has to be better in pass protection, and …

It’s all going to work just fine. Toledo should have enough offense to name its score.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

The Rockets will do whatever they want to.

Going back to 2014, Toledo has averaged 51 points in the six games against FCS teams. It’s about to hit that with ease as it gets out to a hot start and keeps on rolling through the third. LIU won’t have nearly enough offense to keep up.

Mountain West Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Mountain West predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

With all the chatter in the college football world about expansion and realignment – the Mountain West is deep in the rumor mix with a whole lot of possibilities – there’s still a 2022 season to play. How should it all shape up in the Mountain West?

Beyond just seeing if the Pac-12 and Big 12 are interested, there’s one huge change – the divisions are gone.

The conference has several strong teams, and the two best will play for the championship.

It’s a free for all among the teams to get into the top spots, but the schedules stay intact. There’s a slight imbalance with the stronger teams in what used to be in the West Division facing each other, but they would’ve had to do that anyway.

How should the season go and where is everyone projected to finish? Here are the preseason predictions for all the Mountain West teams.
