Expert Picks
Week 1: Thursday/Friday | Saturday | NFL
Week 1 Schedule, Game Previews

Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews & @PeteFiutak

Week 0 turned out to be interesting, but now it gets going for real.

If you were on the right side of the Northwestern call against Nebraska – you’re welcome for that Wildcat on the money line call (getting the cockiness out of the system now before reality kicks back in) – and if you figured out that Vanderbilt was an all-time gift, you enjoyed Week 0.

But we’re all still guessing here.

There aren’t any preseason games, and what happened in Week 0 stayed in Week 0. For the Thursday and Friday games for Week 1 the idea is the same – go with what you know, assume that no one is sharp quite yet, and remember that the coaching staffs had weeks to prepare for this opener.

The big picks for the Week 1 Saturday are coming. First, after the soft opening of Week 0, we get the introduction to the season as we continue to ease into the fun.

5. West Virginia at Pitt point total

LINE 51
Point Total Pick Over

I have to redeem myself for my two misses of last week – they were both on point totals.

The Illinois-Wyoming game was a push, and Northwestern suddenly decided to do that scoring thing again in its win over Nebraska.

That’s all fine. The Backyard Brawl will make up for it.

The point total started out at 55.5, and even then that seemed potentially ten points too low. It immediately dropped like a rock to 51, and the world is going to be a happier place for it.

Obviously that means the public doesn’t believe that this will be any sort of a shootout, but you don’t need much to get to the 51 – 27-24 pushes, and there will be a whole lot more scoring than that.

New teams, new players, but same style for Pitt. Lots of pass rushing, lots of leaving the corners out to dry, and lots of chances for new West Virginia starting QB JT Daniels to bomb away. The Panthers went over on 51 in every game but three last year, and even with the big losses on offense, they should do their part.

[lawrence-related id=549721]

On the other side, there’s a good defense coming back, West Virginia allowed over 20 points nine times. Again, we’re not asking for a firefight here – one team is going to hit 30 in this, and both probably will.

And more than that – and don’t ever take this next part as any reason to invest – it’s one of the big games on Thursday night. You can’t make a game go over, but these two are going to bring the show.

TCU vs Colorado Game Preview

Why TCU Will Win

One of the Big 12’s better offenses in 2021 should be even better under new head coach Sonny Dykes.

The Horned Frogs are loaded at receiver, Max Duggan is an underappreciated talent at quarterback, and the balance will be there with a good running game behind a veteran offensive line.

Colorado has to prove it found a pass rush over the offseason, and it has to go from nothing to great in a hurry offensively to keep up the pace. The Buffaloes struggled to get to 20 points – it only scored more than that four times last season – with the second-worst O in college football yardage-wise.

The transfer portal didn’t do enough to take the attack to a whole other level – it needs QB JT Shrout to be amazing coming off a torn ACL, or Brendon Lewis has to be better.

Fortunately for Colorado …

Week 1 Expert Picks, Thursday & Friday

Why Colorado Will Win

The TCU pass rush isn’t going to be a thing for a little while.

The defense was a stunning disaster last season mostly because it couldn’t do much of anything up front. It would have been a massive help to get a few cupcake games in before this to get everyone in place around the veteran linebackers, but the run D that allowed 222 yards per game will get pushed and tested right away.

No, the Colorado offense isn’t going to be Ohio State, but the running game will come out smashing with a revamped line around Alabama transfer Tommy Brown.

Again, the TCU receiving corps and passing game should be great, but Colorado has the defensive backs to hold up – the secondary might be the team’s biggest strength right away.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams are coming off of wildly disappointing seasons. The Colorado offense that didn’t do much of anything will suddenly find a spark at home, the TCU defense that didn’t much of anything will generate more big stops and should be more effective, and …

For all of Colorado’s problems, it was it 3-0 at home after an October 2nd loss to USC – and was 0-5 on the road. TCU was 0-4 on the road over the same stretch.

Of course that shouldn’t matter – new year, new teams, new styles – but the Buffs being in Boulder helps.

The offensive line will come up with a great performance in the late night setting, but it’ll be the defense that rises up with a good fourth quarter to survive a fun – and somewhat shocking – end to Friday before it Week 1 really gets humming the next morning.

Eastern Michigan vs Eastern Kentucky Game Preview

Why Eastern Kentucky Will Win

The Colonels will once again be steady.

The defense is going to be just okay, and the offense will keep things moving, but it starts with the lines that will hold up well.

QB Parker MicKinney is back, the running backs form a good rotation, and it all works around – again – a decent line that should be able to produce against a decent-not-amazing Eastern Michigan defensive front.

Week 1 Expert Picks, Thursday & Friday

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

The Colonels have a good offensive line. Eastern Michigan’s is better.

There won’t be anything funky happening here. The Eagle running game has the ability to take over right away, the good receivers will keep the chains moving, and the idea will be to keep the mistakes at a minimum and keep on grinding.

Eastern Kentucky will be steadier than spectacular. As long as EMU can win on third downs and keep the turnovers to fewer than two, there won’t be any problems.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

This is a strong enough Colonel team to keep this from getting out of hand, but the Eastern Michigan offense will take over as the game goes on.

The Eagle defense is questionable, and it’ll get pushed on a few EKU scoring drives to keep up early, but it’ll be a workmanlike win for the MAC.

Michigan State vs Western Michigan Game Preview

Why Western Michigan Will Win

The Broncos are going to be dangerous.

The 12th-ranked offense in the country last season gets back a fantastic rushing tandem in Sean Tyler and La’Darius Jefferson, but the question mark will be a passing game that loses QB Kaleb Eleby and WR Skyy Moore.

Michigan State has worked really, really hard on improving the nation’s worst pass defense, but it has to prove it. This might not be the Western Michigan team of last year that was able to beat Pitt in a shootout, but it’s going to test the Spartans deep, the defense should once again be among the best in the nation at getting into the backfield, and …

Week 1 Expert Picks, Thursday & Friday

Why Michigan State Will Win

The Michigan State running game should be able to pound away on the Bronco defensive front.

Kenneth Walker might be gone, but the combination of transfers Jarek Broussard (Colorado) and Jalen Berger (Wisconsin) should be able to keep it all going. QB Payton Thorne and WR Jayden Reed have the ability to bother a Bronco secondary that has to prove it can make more big plays.

The Spartans have the line to get into the backfield and slow down the Western Michigan running game, the rotation at tackle will be outstanding, and yeah, the secondary really will be better.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

Be … careful … Michigan State.

Western Michigan is a maddening team. It’s once again going to have the talent to beat just about anyone on the right day, but consistency will be a big issue yet again.

Michigan State is all set for another big season, but it has enough flaws to potentially be exposed if Western Michigan finds a groove right away.

The Spartans will pull this off, but it’ll take too much work, a lot of sweat, and a big momentum turn over the final 20 minutes to get there.

Kansas vs Tennessee Tech Game Preview

Why Tennessee Tech Will Win

Tennessee Tech has enough good skill parts for Kansas to worry about.

Getting QB Jeremiah Oatsvall from Memphis – he’s going into his sixth season of college football – is a major plus with his all-around game. RB David Gist and WR Quinton Cross are among the best at their respective positions in the Ohio Valley Conference – the O will be stronger this year.

The Golden Eagles are once again going to be good at controlling the tempo, owning the clock, and relying on a good run defense to get by. But …

Week 1 Expert Picks, Thursday & Friday

Why Kansas Will Win

The Tennessee Tech offense will be better, but it’s not going to crank up the big numbers.

Even with Oatsvall, the downfield passing game isn’t going to be there – last year’s O only scored more than 28 points once – and on the other side, the pass rush isn’t going to be anything special.

The Kansas offensive line should be solid in pass protection, the linebacking corps will be a boost to an improved defense, and …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas should finally have an easy win.

Never put anything past how hard things are for Kansas as it tries to get going, but this should be the best the program has been for years. If all goes according to plan, this will be the first time it comes up with a double-digit win since beating Boston College 48-24 on September 13th, 2019.

Tennessee Tech will bring the fight – especially against the run – but the offense won’t be able to do enough after the Jayhawks score on their first two drives.

Charlotte vs William & Mary Game Preview

Why William & Mary Will Win

Will Charlotte be fully focused?

It started the season with a Week 0 43-13 blowout loss to Florida Atlantic and gets Maryland right after dealing with William & Mary.

The Tribe have a 1-2 rushing punch of Bronson Yoder and Donavyn Lester to lead a deep running game that should be the best in the CAA again.

The offensive line is good enough to keep the 49er defense from doing too much in the backfield, the defensive line has the parts to come up with a good rotation – the run D will be great, and …

Week 1 Expert Picks, Thursday & Friday

Why Charlotte Will Win

Charlotte getting that game against Florida Atlantic will be a plus – even if it got ugly.

The team got the live hitting part out of the way, and it should have the timing down a bit better after struggling to get things moving in the second half.

Yes, William & Mary will be good on the lines, and the running game will be strong, but Charlotte should be able to run the ball without a problem thanks to a loaded group of backs in a good rotation, and QB Chris Reynolds has his top receivers returning.

Again, getting the timing down against FAU matters, the 49ers aren’t going to convert just two of 11 third down tries again, and …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

William & Mary won’t have the passing game to keep up if and when Charlotte gets out to a good start.

The big question mark for the 49ers is the secondary, and the defense is starting with a few new parts, but again, the Tribe’s offense won’t be dangerous enough to take advantage of that.

The Charlotte offense will take over right away.

Penn State vs Purdue Game Preview

Why Penn State Will Win

The defensive back seven should be able to hold up.

Purdue isn’t going to run the ball. Actually, more to the point, it won’t be able to run the ball and won’t give it much of a shot with the passing attack taking over right away – and without 2021 star WR David Bell.

The Penn State secondary has a few stars in corner Joey Porter and safety Ji’Ayir Brown, and Kalen King is a growing playmaker on the other side of Porter. If the pass rush that was just okay last season can rise up and start doing a little more, the Boilermakers won’t take control offensively like it will want to.

On the other side, QB Sean Clifford and the 1-2 receiving punch of Parker Washington and KeAndre Lambert-Smith should hit the Purdue secondary deep. However …

Why Purdue Will Win

The Purdue defensive front should do more than hold its own against the Penn State offensive line.

The Nittany Lions aren’t bad up front – it was fine, and it helped the depth through the transfer portal – but it still has to prove it can provide a push after a rough year for the ground game and do something in pass protection.

No, Purdue isn’t going to own the trenches defensively, but if Penn State can’t control the clock – time of possession wasn’t a part of the plan last season, but should change up a bit this year – and if it can’t grind a tad bit, that’s a problem.

Penn State doesn’t want to make this about whose passing game is stronger.

The Purdue secondary has the experience and potential all-star parts to make its share of plays and third down stops.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Penn State has more talent across the board, and it’s got a far stronger defense overall that should do a lot of bending without a ton of breaking.

Here’s the difference. Purdue will control the tempo and the game with its passing attack, and Penn State will always be chasing.

The idea will be to be more diverse offensively – to go along with the tempo that will try to keep the Boilermakers pedaling backwards – but it has to deal prove it can score enough to keep up in key moments.

Is the Purdue offense going to keep up the momentum from the second half of last season when it ripped through everyone? QB Aidan O’Connell and the passing game will always seem like they’re in control, right up until the moment they’re not.

The Penn State defense will come up with a few big stops late – and Clifford will hit on the one big deep shot – to pull this off. It won’t be a pretty win, but it’s the Big Ten road opener – take it and get out no matter how it looks.

Oklahoma State vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why Central Michigan Will Win

The Chippewas were badly hurt by the vultures in the transfer portal and to the NFL Draft, but they return enough good offensive parts to be dangerous.

Daniel Richardson is a good veteran quarterback who can keep things moving, Lew Nichols led the nation in rushing last season, and the secondary should be one of the best in the MAC as the season goes on.

Central Michigan should once again be strong defensively on third downs, the pass rush will once again be terrific, and the No. 1 team in college football in tackles for loss will generate a push. However …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Oklahoma State’s offense will be balanced and explosive, and the great defense of 2021 isn’t going to skip a beat.

The Cowboys lost their top four tacklers, but new defensive coordinator Dereck Mason should be able to keep it all going thanks to a loaded group of defensive ends that should live in the Central Michigan backfield.

The Chippewa offensive front will be okay – it has the size and options to find the right starting five as the season goes on – but it has to replace NFL blockers Bernhard Raimann and Luke Goedeke on the outside.

Oklahoma State isn’t the team you want to go against if you’re breaking in two new offensive tackles. The defense should be able to control the game with a few key sacks.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

Central Michigan won’t be a pushover, but the balance of the OSU offense – starting with the experience of QB Spencer Sanders and a good running game – should keep pressing through a few big lulls.

Oklahoma State is occasionally slow out of the gate.

It struggled to get by Missouri State in a 23-16 win to kickoff last year, it had to push to beat Tulsa to start 2020, and it famously – and controversially – was shocked by Central Michigan 30-27 in Week 2 of 2016.

It won’t be a perfect performance, but relatively slow and steady will win the race – there will be two explosive plays to pull away. Central Michigan will keep it close for a while, but the Cowboy defense will clamp down in the second half.

West Virginia vs Pitt Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

In the battle of USC quarterbacks, West Virginia might have landed the best of the bunch.

It’s not like the Mountaineer offense was all that bad last year, but it wasn’t consistent. Now it’s about to crank things up a few notches with former USC offensive coordinator Graham Harrell getting to coach up JT Daniels, the former Trojan super-recruit who got hurt, went to Georgia, got hurt, and landed in Morgantown with the upside to put up a massive season if he can stay healthy.

The West Virginia front five is loaded with all-star veterans and should be the best yet in the Neal Brown era. There’s going to be a big problem for the home team if the secondary – that’s always feast-or-famine under Pat Narduzzi, giving up 264 yards per game last season – doesn’t get enough help from the line.

When he’s in a groove, Daniels is a special talent, the Mountaineer defense should be every bit as strong as last year’s bunch that allowed just 350 yards per game, but …

Why Pitt Will Win

The West Virginia offensive line has to prove it.

It might be experienced, and it might be better, but it also didn’t do much of anything last year for the running game and was the worst in the Big 12 in sacks and tackles for loss allowed.

There’s no time to gear up – the Pitt defensive front lives rent free in opposing backfields.

The Panthers were No. 1 in the ACC against the run – granted, that’s because everyone was busy throwing on the questionable secondary – was second in the nation behind Oklahoma State in sacks, and was fifth in the country in tackles for loss.

Start with Habakkuk Baldonado on the outside, Calijah Kancey on the inside, and a linebacking corps that gets all over the field, and Daniels and the rest of the backfield are going to be under a whole bunch of pressure all game long.

And on the other side …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

That Kedon Slovis guy is pretty good.

The Panthers might not have Kenny Pickett around anymore, and Jordan Addison might be off catching passes on the coast at USC, but Trojan transfer Slovis can carry the workload. He’s not going to have to do it all alone – there will be a bit more balance to keep everything moving.

The return of the Backyard Brawl will be worth the wait.

These two rivals haven’t played since 2011 – 21-20 West Virginia win. This time around, 21-20 might be the first half.

Daniels will take his share of shots both down the field and from the Pitt defensive front on the way to a huge passing day, but it won’t be quite enough to overcome a solid day from Slovis that will be a back-and-forth fight that goes down to the final drive.

Akron vs Saint Francis Game Preview

Why Saint Francis Will Win

The Red Flash will bring a defense against an Akron offense that needs to find a jumpstart.

Saint Francis should start the season with a dangerous pass rush – it was among the best in the FCS in 2021 – to go along with an offense that’s not going to give away many mistakes.

The goal is to keep this low scoring and try to come through late – last year’s team allowed fewer than 20 points in five of the last seven games. Donnell Brown and the defensive front should hold their own against an Akron line that needs to be far, far stronger. However …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Akron Will Win

New head coach Joe Moorhead should do wonders with the Akron offense.

It might not happen right away, but the skill stars are going to be okay – especially in the backfield – and Saint Francis isn’t going to bring a high-powered offense to press the big plays.

Last year’s team struggled to get past 22 points – it only did that three times. The Akron defense might not be anything special, but the secondary should be fine against a mediocre Saint Francis passing game.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t expect this to be a high-flying fun show of points, but Moorhead’s offense will come up with just enough pop and balance to push ahead and stay there.

Saint Francis has a shot to pull this off if it wins the turnover battle – the O isn’t going to give the Zips any breaks – but it won’t be able to take advantage of its chances in the second half.
