Florida vs Georgia Game Preview

Why Florida Will Win

Florida has the offensive versatility to potentially throw something different at the Georgia D.

No one’s running on this Bulldog brick wall, but Auburn – and to a certain extent, Arkansas – are the only teams on the slate so far that can actually throw a bit.

This isn’t the fun-time Kyle Trask Gator offense of last year, but it’s good enough to be the biggest test yet for the Georgia secondary with both Emory Jones and Anthony Richardson expected to see time.

If that works – and if the O can hit its normal 200+ yards through the air – that could open things up just a wee bit for a ground attack that won’t go off, but might be able to control the game and the clock a little bit.

And then there’s the Georgia quarterback issue.

Stetson Bennett has been terrific so far, but that’s partly because he hasn’t had to throw a pass in a stressful situation. He was amazing last year early on, and then Alabama happened – there’s a multi-interception game in there somewhere. That’s, of course, if he plays.

Head coach Kirby Smart is keeping the starting quarterback situation under wraps now that JT Daniels is healthy again. If Daniels really is 100%, he’s it. He’s the national championship-level, NFL starting quarterback who takes the No. 1 team up a few notches, but he also hasn’t played in a month.

The Florida D might have issues, but it can get to the quarterback. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Georgia Will Win

Can Florida avoid the big mistakes?

The Gator defense might have been pounded on by LSU, but it was solid against Alabama and was able to keep Tennessee from doing all the fancy schmancy things it does. However, Georgia should be able to keep this simple.

Bulk yards don’t necessarily matter here. Georgia was able to maintain control against Kentucky with just 166 yards on the ground. That was a don’t-screw-it-up game, and it didn’t – run, rely on the defense, don’t make big mistakes. The Dawgs didn’t turn the ball over.

There were turnovers over the first part of the year, but the offense hasn’t given it up in the last three games. Florida’s defense doesn’t help itself with takeaways with just six on the year and four of them coming in the wins over Florida Atlantic and Vanderbilt.

Yeah, can throw a bit, but it gave away four interceptions against LSU, two the week before against Vanderbilt, and turned it over 13 times on the season with a -7 turnover margin.

Florida has the talent and the athletes to pull this off, but it has to be perfect, it has to win the turnover margin for the first time this season, and …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Florida won’t win the turnover battle.

As always, this will be among the most intense, hard-hitting battles of the season. However, for Georgia, it’s going to be about playing at an even keel and not getting caught up in the emotion, the huge hits, and the big plays on both sides of the ball that Florida will occasionally come up with.

But the Georgia run defense really is just that good.

The formula will continue to work. Rely on the offense to grind out enough yards to matter, don’t take unnecessary chances, expect the defense to own the game, especially in the second half.

Missouri vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why Missouri Will Win

Vanderbilt still isn’t big on that whole scoring thing.

It’s dead last in the nation in averaging just 13.2 points per outing whether it needs them or not.

The team is able to battle from time to time, but it has yet to score more than 20 points in any SEC game and scored six or fewer in three of the four.

Missouri has its issues, but it’s got the versatility to move the ball however it wants. It ran well against North Texas, it threw just fine against Tennessee and Boston College, and any sort of a scoring burst might be too much for this struggling Commodore attack to overcome.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Missouri still isn’t big on that whole defense thing.

The Tigers are dead last in the SEC in total defense, second-to-last in the nation against the run, and there are a whole lot of problems getting off the field – offenses are allowing teams to hit close to 50% of their third down chances.

No, Vanderbilt’s offense isn’t anything special, but it has to try running and keep hammering away no matter what – things will eventually open up.

The Tigers have allowed 275 yards or more on the ground in five of their last six games, with North Texas the only team that didn’t get there and bombed away for over 300 yards.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

This is one game that Vanderbilt has a real shot at winning in SEC play.

It’s at home, Missouri really, really doesn’t do anything on defense, and …

Nah. Mizzou has had two weeks off to rest up from the loss to Texas A&M, the offense should be able to get the passing attack going against the shaky Commodore pass D – it’s the worst in the SEC – and the defense will finally come up with just enough stops to get by.

Week 8 Roundup What It All Means
CFN 1-130 Rankings | Bowl Projections
Week 8 scoreboard, all the predictions
Week 8 opening lines | AP | Coaches
Big Game Reaction: Illinois, Oregon, Pitt, more

We lost three teams from the College Football Playoff chase – Penn State, NC State, and Coastal Carolina – and now, out of the 130 teams playing FBS football, we’re down to 21.

The first College Football Playoff rankings come out next week, but remember, they’re just a snapshot of the moment.

The theories and beliefs still hold – win your Power Five conference championship, do it with one loss or go unbeaten, and you’re almost certainly in.

So who’s realistically still left? We rank all 21 teams that have a path to get into the playoff going from those with no shot to those who control their own destiny.

This isn’t a College Football Playoff ranking projection – that’s coming. This is all based on likelihood of getting in and the clearest paths to getting in.

21. UTSA Roadrunners (8-0)

There’s a win over Illinois on the resumé, and it’s possible to roll through the rest of an easy schedule to get into the discussion, but it would take a meltdown of the entire college football world for UTSA to get into the final four. However, making into a New Year’s Six game isn’t out of the question if Cincinnati and San Diego State both lose.

20. San Diego State Aztecs (7-0)

There just aren’t any style points. The Aztecs win with the nation’s best run defense, a tough offense that doesn’t make mistakes, and repeat steps 1 and 2.

Wins over Utah and Arizona aren’t enough, but the schedule overall is better than Cincinnati’s. It won’t matter for the College Football Playoff chase, but the Aztecs are right there for a possible New Year’s Six bowl by winning out.

19. SMU Mustangs (7-0)

It’s the team we’re not talking about  … yet.

SMU’s big win is at TCU, but it’s rolling through its schedule – a slate that makes Cincinnati’s look like an SEC West team – but there’s a trip to Cincinnati in late November. Throw in dates with Houston and Memphis on the road and UCF and Tulsa at home, and this could be the it team by the time the showdown with the Bearcats rolls around.

18. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (6-1)

Notre Dame is sort of stuck because it needs Cincinnati to lose twice. Or, it needs Cincinnati to rip through the rest of its schedule, and it needs the Power Five conference championships to be in meltdown mode. With that said, a few style points wouldn’t hurt, especially considering there won’t be one great win on the resumé by going 11-1.

17. Texas A&M Aggies (6-2)

Here’s how this has to work. Win out, hope for one more loss by Alabama along the way, beat unbeaten No. 1 Georgia in the SEC Championship. Do that, in a four-best-team way, a two-loss team will be in the College Football Playoff for the first time.

16. Ole Miss Rebels (6-1)

The loss to Alabama is a problem – Ole Miss can’t get to the SEC Championship if the Tide don’t lose again – but if it wins out against a decent slate that includes Texas A&M and road dates at Auburn and Mississippi State, and if Alabama wins the SEC Championship over Georgia, in a theoretical way, Ole Miss might have to be considered one of the four best teams.

Winners & Losers From Week 8

Winner: Cincinnati, San Diego State, Wake Forest

It might not have been a walk in the park, but there are just nine unbeaten teams left, and Cincinnati, San Diego State, and Wake Forest have managed to be among them. They each had quirky tests last week that turned out to be somewhat historic – unbeaten ranked teams all going against service academies – and they all passed.

Loser: Air Force, Army, Navy

The amazing San Diego State run defense held Air Force to just 192 rushing yards in a 20-14 win. Army put up 56 points and 416 rushing yards on Wake Forest, but gave up 70 points. 1-6 Navy scored ten fourth quarter points to push Cincinnati – who was held to just 271 yards of total offense – in a 27-20 Bearcat win.

Winner: Pitt QB Kenny Pickett

Ole Miss’ Matt Corral and Coastal Carolina’s Grayson McCall have each thrown 15 touchdown passes with just one interception. There’s only one quarterback who’s better at the whole TD-to-INT thing.

Kenny Pickett has thrown 23 touchdown passes with just the one pick, he has two or more scoring throws in every game, and he’s coming off a 302-yard, two touchdown, no interception day in the 27-17 win over Clemson, which was massive because …

Loser: Clemson losing by double-digits

November 15th, 2014. That was the last time Clemson lost a regular season game by ten points or more, dropping the date to Georgia Tech 28-6. It took a total of seven regular seasons before Pitt finally broke the streak with its win on Saturday.

Winner: Sun Belt

The natural expansion progression appeared to be the Power Five would take American Athletic Conference schools, the AAC would take Conference USA schools, and Conference USA would take Sun Belt schools.

But things have flipped – the Sun Belt is grabbing Southern Miss from Conference USA, and it might get Marshall and Old Dominion, too. Throw in James Madison from the FCS, and the Sun Belt is about to get a whole lot stronger.

Loser: Conference USA

The doom-and-gloom is warranted with Conference USA likely losing nine of its 14 members, but there’s a flicker of hope. It can go add a slew of FCS programs, a few independents might be added to the mix, and there’s always the option of trying woo a few schools from the MAC, but there’s also a shot that the league can’t go on. It’s going to all depend on what kind of TV and streaming deals the league can rework.

Winner: USF

The Bulls beat Temple 34-14 on Saturday for their first win over an FBS program this season – they beat Florida A&M in September. That broke a streak of 17 straight losses against FBSers since getting by East Carolina in late October of 2019.

Loser: Arizona, Kansas, UNLV

With the heartbreaking 21-16 loss to Washington, Arizona is now 0-7 and on a 19-game losing streak since beating Colorado in early October of 2019.

With its tough loss to Oklahoma, Kansas has lost 19 straight to FBS teams 23 of its last 24.

UNLV had San Jose State there for the taking, but couldn’t catch a break on a ton of Spartan fumbles and collapsed late in a 27-20 loss. It’s now 0-7 and lost 13 straight – and 21 of its last 24 – with the last victory coming over Nevada to close out 2019.

College Football Rankings 1 To 130: Week 8. Everything Is About To Blow Up

College Football News rankings of all 130 teams after Week 8. The rankings are settling in, but it’s all about to blow up fast.

College Football News 2021 college football rankings after Week 8 for all 130 teams with results and who’s up next week.

It’s the week before it all blows up.

Penn State losing to Illinois was a big deal, and the sleepwalking wins by a few top teams matters a little bit, but we’re about to get into the real fun with the Big Ten East teams about to play each other, the ACC season about to heat up for real – yes, with Wake Forest and Pitt must watch from here on – and with Oklahoma having to step up its game fast.

And Georgia plays Florida next Saturday.

There aren’t a ton of big changes here – as always, if you have a beef, look at the schedule and you’ll probably find your answer – but don’t settle in. These rankings – especially the top 25 – are about to get interesting over the next few weeks.

Oklahoma 35, Kansas 23 Reaction

Any landing you can walk away from is a good one.

It’s a 12-point win on the road in Big 12 play. The rest is just details, but …

Obviously this game was a problem for Oklahoma.

You don’t struggle that much with Kansas and just chalk it up to a flat day at the office. The offense couldn’t score in the first against one of the worst teams in America. The defense got picked clean and needed to be saved by a Heisman-worthy few plays by the freshman quarterback to get out alive.

And yes, Caleb Williams is in the Heisman race. Find anyone who’s supposedly among the favorites who has done anything bigger than 1) tear off a 40-yard touchdown run on fourth down to help take over the game on the road, and 2) have the presence of mind to take the ball away from RB Kennedy Brooks – who was stuffed on fourth down – to grind to a desperately-needed first down.

Williams saved a shockingly disappointing defense that couldn’t handle Jason Bean – a good, veteran quarterback who put up big yards at North Texas and did everything he could to try pulling off the shocker – and he’s apparently going to have to do so as the rest of the season goes on.

Oklahoma’s 35 second half points got the job done, but Kansas outgained the Sooners 412 to 398. The Sooners committed penalty after key penalty, the secondary was seemingly outguessed on every third down, and this was way, way too close for comfort.

It’s now a problem.

OU tried to give away the Tulane game. It tried to give away the Kansas State game. It didn’t get off the bus against Texas until Williams stepped in.

It can’t put together a full 60 minutes without taking a nap during a sizable portion of the game, and that’s not going to fly with Texas Tech, at Baylor, Iowa State, at Oklahoma State, and likely the Big 12 Championship and College Football Playoff still to go.
