Jags players doing their part to help communities as nation battles COVID-19

The Jags have continued to support their communities through the nation’s battle with COVID-19, including RB Leonard Fournette.

As the nation’s battle with COVID-19 continues, the NFL’s support for their millions of fans affected has also continued. Earlier in the month, we posted the stories on how owner Shad Khan and cornerback Tre Herndon have helped the Jacksonville area. Since, many more have joined the battle to fight COVID-19 including Leonard Fournette, DJ Chark Jr., Josh Lambo, Tyler Shatley, Carl Davis, and Chris Conley.

Fournette, who has been a huge part of his community in New Orleans and Jacksonville, will be donating 7,000 meals up until June to Second Harvest of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana. The gesture is one that will certainly go a long way for a community that has been deemed a hot spot and area of concern for America.

Chark has done his part by using social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram to spread the messages of local businesses. His friend from the receivers room, Conley, raised $9,300 for the World Health Organization after placing second in a Fortnite tournament.

Lambo, a big-time pet lover, has offered to cover a portion of adoption fees and a six months supply of dog food for any dog adopted from Fur Sisters of Jacksonville Beach. Lambo is familiar with the shelter as that’s where he adopted his dog, Indie, from.

Davis, who recently signed with the Jags, spent time with people residing at Five Star Veteran Center, which is a local non-profit that helps with supporting veteran mental health and re-integration into civilian life. Last, Shatley gave over $10,000 towards several outreach efforts to senior citizens.

The donation will be matched by the Jags Foundation. That funding will support a joint partnership between Florida Blue and Feeding Northeast Florida, who will prepare 1,500 meals for senior citizens in the Jacksonville area. Funding will also go towards feeding first responders and workers in the healthcare field.

Jags pick up team options for WR Chris Conley, safety Jarrod Wilson

The Jags will be bringing back two key contributors as they picked up the contract options of WR Chris Conley and safety Jarrod Wilson.

The Jacksonville Jaguars picked up the contract options of two key contributors in receiver Chris Conley and safety Jarrod Wilson Friday. The move to keep both now puts Conley under contract for one more year and Wilson under contract through 2021.

Conley, 27, joined the Jags last season as a free agent from the Kansas City Chiefs. While participating in 16 games and starting in 14, he was able to garner career-highs in receptions (47), receiving yards (775), and receiving average (16.5). His total in receiving yards put him only under DJ Chark Jr. for the season, so many expected him to remain with the team.

Wilson, 26, has been with the Jags since 2016 when he joined the team as an undrafted free agent. He signed an extension last January, then proceeded to start in all 16 regular season games for the Jags. He accumulated 73 tackles — a career-high — and registered a Pro Football Focus grade of 72.7 on the season. While the Jags could add a safety to push him down the road, he looks to be penciled in as a starter for 2020 alongside Ronnie Harrison.

Postgame analysis: Jags acquire another double-digit loss season after falling to Falcons

The Jags struggles on defense continued against the Falcons and it resulted in their tenth loss of the season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars weren’t able to feed off the momentum they had last week in Oakland and fell to the Atlanta Falcons Sunday by a score of 24-12. The game marked their fifth double-digit loss since the bye week as the Jags fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter and could never recover. It also gave them their seventh double-digit loss season with Shad Khan as owner.

There were issues all over the place, but the defense probably was the biggest one as they allowed quarterback Matt Ryan and company to have success at will. The veteran had 384 passing yards on the day, 166 of which went to Julio Jones, and 82 of which went to Austin Hooper.

Coming into the game, we mentioned how strong the Falcons’ passing game was and they showed why they were the NFL’s fourth-ranked team through the air. Jones especially couldn’t be stopped even with the Jags’ best cornerback, A.J. Bouye, on him.

The Jags also didn’t fare well against the rush. The Falcons’ top rusher on the day, Brian Hill, had seven carries for 66 yards, which was good for a whopping average of 9.4. Their second-leading rusher, Devonta Freeman, had 13 carries for 53 yards (4.1-yard average) on the day and a touchdown.

The Jags also didn’t have a strong day on offense. They were only able to garner a total of 288 total rushing yards in comparison to the 518 the Falcons had. Gardner Minshew II finished the day with 181 passing yards and a touchdown, which went to receiver Chris Conley. The touchdown pass marked the third consecutive scoring connection between the two as they linked up for two touchdown passes last week against the Oakland Raiders. However, it ultimately proved not to be enough.

The Jags now have one game left on the season, which will end what has been a catastrophic year. That game will take place at TIAA Bank Field at 1 p.m. ET on CBS.

Postgame analysis: Jags spoil Raiders’ historic day thanks to some Minshew Magic

The Jags were out-gained in total yards and time of possession but somehow managed to acquire a win over Oakland.

The Jacksonville Jaguars came into Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders with a 2-12 all-time record and a nine-game losing streak on the West Coast but that changed Week 15. With the help of some “Minshew Magic,” the Cardiac Cats were able to rain on the Raiders’ parade in their last regular season game at RingCentral Coliseum (a.k.a. Oakland Coliseum).

After a relatively flat first half on offense, Gardner Minshew II and company were able to score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, both of which were courtesy of receiver Chris Conley. Coincidentally, both drives were also the Jags’ first and last drives of the fourth quarter on offense.

The first scoring drive was an 11-play drive for 53-yards. The second scoring drive, which gave them the lead, was another one in which Jags fans will forever tie to Minshew’s name.

Minshew rallied the Jags after a missed field goal by the Raiders by hitting a combination of C.J. Board, Leonard Fournette and Conley along the way with roughly 3:30 left in the game. Before snagging the game-winning touchdown, Conley also contributed a 21-yard reception on the drive. Eventually, the Jags found themselves on the Raiders’ 4-yard line and Minshew threw a dart to Conley on a slant pattern, silencing the Oakland crowd.

Minshew finished the game 17-of-29 for 201 yards and two touchdowns. Conley, on the other hand, had four catches for 49 yards and the two aforementioned touchdowns.

Defensively, the Jags allowed 364 total yards, 236 of which came through the air, however, the pass rush came up big for the Jags in some key moments. They finished the game with four sacks on Derek Carr. Two of those sacks came from pass-rusher Yannick Ngakoue, who was unstoppable all game and also totaled five tackles. Rookie pass-rusher Josh Allen also had a solid day, acquiring his 10th sac of the season, which put him with interesting company.

Sunday’s win was a weird one, to say the least, as the Raiders out-gained the Jags in total yards (364 to 262) and had a longer time of possession (34:12 to 25:48). In the end, the Jags managed to pull off a win though and that’s all that matters.

The Jags’ next game will be on the road against the Atlanta Falcons. That game will take place at 1 p.m. ET on Dec. 22.

Jaguars X-factors on offense and defense vs. Titans

The Jags will likely need some big contributions from a couple of players who don’t start and DL Dawuane Smoot could be one of those players.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will look to get the season sweep against a Tennessee Titans this Sunday. Both teams are looking to avoid the bottom spot in the AFC South and possibly sneak in as a dark-horse playoff pick.

The Jaguars beat the Titans in the first meeting this season in Week 3 by a score of 20-7. The defense stepped up that night as they would collect nine sacks and limited the Titans’ offense to 4.5 yards per play.

Rivalry games are extremely unpredictable as both teams are familiar with each other. These are times where a player who isn’t particularly a household name can step up a catch the opponent off guard.

The Jaguars will look to get some contributions from players who aren’t exactly the main starters to supply a spark and secure the victory against the Titans.

Jaguars wide receiver Chris Conley will be counted on to stretch the Titans defense as the team’s third receiver. Jaguars wide receiver Dede Westbrook was listed with an illness earlier in the week and he missed some time as a result.

Should Westbrook’s snaps be limited in any way, the Jaguars should feel confident in knowing that Conley can handle the load. Conley has fared well in his last four games with 15 receptions for 276 yards and a touchdown.

The Titans defense is ranked No. 20 in the NFL in terms of receiving yards allowed. Conley’s game is highly predicated on big plays as he possesses some serious speed and sits at 17.9 yards per reception. This looks like a game where he can be successful based on not only his skill set but also Westbrook’s limited impact (if not 100%) and the Titans’ questionable secondary.

2 Jaguars X-factors to watch vs. Colts

Chis Conley might be the Jags’ X-factor on offense against the Colts, while Ronnie Harrison may be for the defense.

Heading into Sunday’s game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Indianapolis Colts, there are many players who fans are expecting to put up solid stats. In the Jags’ case, Leonard Fournette, D.J. Chark, Calais Campbell and Yannick Ngakoue all fall in that category. However, in some games, there is an unexpected player who impacts the outcome, also known as X-factors.

Let’s take a look at a player on each side of the ball who could be that player for the Jags in their must-win game against Indy:

WR Chris Conley

With quarterback Nick Foles back, fans shouldn’t rule out the passing game having a good day in general although I tend to think there will be some rust. However, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Foles link up with the target he’s the most familiar with in Chris Conley, who was a teammate of his with the Kansas City Chiefs, too.

Conley has only registered one 100-yard game so far this regular season and that was against the New York Jets. It may remain that way by the end of Sunday’s game, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see Foles and Conley link up for multiple key connections. It also wouldn’t shock me to see Conley get over five receptions, something the hasn’t happened since Week 1.
