South Alabama vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why South Alabama Will Win

Nicholls is pretty good.

The Colonels have a high-powered FCS offense, they’re good at getting into the backfield, and … they got dropkicked by South Alabama in a 48-7 loss.

Everything clicked for the Jaguars with over 500 yards of offense, a dominant performance by the defense, and full control of the game as everything looked great under rising head man Kane Wommack.

Central Michigan couldn’t stop a thing for three quarters when Oklahoma State was trying in the 58-44 Cowboy win. The balance of the USA attack will keep coming, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Central Michigan Will Win

Central Michigan made it fun.

Oklahoma State was up 37-7 late in the third and 51-15 in the fourth, but the Chippewas kept trying.

It was still a 12-point loss, but Daniel Richardson threw for 424 yards and four scores, Lew Nichols ran for two touchdowns, and the offense showed off the firepower to potentially keep up with anyone.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The South Alabama defense should be the real deal.

It was already good, and then the transfer portal took things up a few notches. Can the team continue to get the same offensive production it showed against Nicholls, and can the Central Michigan D hold up when pressed?

It’s a fun matchup between two teams that will battle every week in their respective conferences.

South Alabama will keep up, but Richardson, Nichols, and the Chippewa offense will be a bit more explosive in the second half. It’s not going to be like the fourth quarter in Stillwater, but it’ll be enough.

Oklahoma State vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why Central Michigan Will Win

The Chippewas were badly hurt by the vultures in the transfer portal and to the NFL Draft, but they return enough good offensive parts to be dangerous.

Daniel Richardson is a good veteran quarterback who can keep things moving, Lew Nichols led the nation in rushing last season, and the secondary should be one of the best in the MAC as the season goes on.

Central Michigan should once again be strong defensively on third downs, the pass rush will once again be terrific, and the No. 1 team in college football in tackles for loss will generate a push. However …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Oklahoma State’s offense will be balanced and explosive, and the great defense of 2021 isn’t going to skip a beat.

The Cowboys lost their top four tacklers, but new defensive coordinator Dereck Mason should be able to keep it all going thanks to a loaded group of defensive ends that should live in the Central Michigan backfield.

The Chippewa offensive front will be okay – it has the size and options to find the right starting five as the season goes on – but it has to replace NFL blockers Bernhard Raimann and Luke Goedeke on the outside.

Oklahoma State isn’t the team you want to go against if you’re breaking in two new offensive tackles. The defense should be able to control the game with a few key sacks.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

Central Michigan won’t be a pushover, but the balance of the OSU offense – starting with the experience of QB Spencer Sanders and a good running game – should keep pressing through a few big lulls.

Oklahoma State is occasionally slow out of the gate.

It struggled to get by Missouri State in a 23-16 win to kickoff last year, it had to push to beat Tulsa to start 2020, and it famously – and controversially – was shocked by Central Michigan 30-27 in Week 2 of 2016.

It won’t be a perfect performance, but relatively slow and steady will win the race – there will be two explosive plays to pull away. Central Michigan will keep it close for a while, but the Cowboy defense will clamp down in the second half.

Central Michigan Chippewas Preview 2022

This is going well under head coach Jim McElwain.

He might have had a rough landing as he got bounced out from the Florida job, but he got the Gators to two straight SEC Championship games.

In his three years at CMU he and the program won at least a share of two division titles, went to two bowls, and has a solid 20-13 record overall and a 15-7 clip in conference.

No, he and the Chippewas haven’t been able to take that extra step and win the conference title, and that’s going to be a whole lot harder to do this year.

The team is good, the coaching is great, but the success has been a slight problem as teams have poached the program for some of the top talents, especially on defense. Combine that with the NFL losses on the offensive line, and this isn’t going to be easy.

Rebuilding isn’t all that new, though, for Central Michigan and McElwain. The team will still be a player in the MAC race.

Central Michigan Chippewas Preview 2022: Offense

The offense managed to crank up enough to efficiently get the job done. The Chippewas were 24th in the nation in total offense, the running game was good, the passing attack was the second-best in the MAC, and the production was steady over the second half of the season. But …

The offensive line loses some massive parts. The interior is good with decent size and depth, but you don’t get better after losing tackles the caliber of Bernhard Raimann (Indianapolis Colts) and Luke Goedeke (Tampa Bay Buccaneers).

The backfield gets back leading rusher Lew Nichols – he ran for 1,848 yards and 16 touchdowns – and welcomes back Kobe Lewis from a knee injury that cost him last season.

Veteran QB Daniel Richardson isn’t too much of a runner, but he was terrific as he grew into the job as a passer last season, throwing for 2,583 yards and 24 touchdowns with just six picks. Now he needs more options to throw to.

Leading receiver Kalil Pimpleton is off trying to become a Detroit Lion and JaCorey Sullivan is gone, but Dallas Dixon is back after making 45 catches for 701 yards and eight scores. Junior Joel Wilson will once again be one of the MAC’s best pass-catching tight ends.

Central Michigan Chippewas Preview 2022: Defense

The defense got poached, and it’s going to hurt. Star safety Devonni Reed (South Carolina), LB Troy Brown (Ole Miss), and LB George Douglas (SMU) are gone along with leading tackler Greg Kreski and top pass rushers Troy Hairston (Houston Texans) and Amir Saddiq (Charlotte).

The D was the best in the nation at coming up with tackles for loss and was fourth in sacks. It led the MAC against the run, but it was hammered through the air. On the plus side …

The secondary has enough experience to potentially be okay. At the very least, the veteran corners are in place and the safeties have good size – even if they’re a little green. They all need help from the defensive front that has to rotate in new parts. There’s decent size in the interior, and the new ends are hybrids who’ll keep on coming.

The linebacking corps is undergoing the biggest overhaul. Sophomore Kyle Moretti is a 230-pound sophomore who made 48 tackles, sophomore Justin Whiteside got in enough work to be ready, but the developed depth isn’t there.

2022 Preseason CFN MAC Offensive Player of the Year

RB Lew Nichols, Soph. Central Michigan

Coming off a strong 2020 averaging close to seven yards per carry with over 500 rushing yards, he was all but unstoppable in 2021.

The 5-10, 220-pounder led the nation with 1,848 rushing yards and over 142 per game with 16 rushing scores and two receiving touchdowns. Steady, he came up with over 130 yards in each of the last eight games, and once again he’s going to be the featured star of the attack.

2022 Preseason CFN MAC Defensive Player of the Year

LB Jamal Hines, Sr. Toledo

The three-time All-MAC defender – First Team last season – is a true hybrid who can do a little of everything right. He’s an outside linebacker, but he’s really an edge rushing defensive end who’ll live behind the line for stretches.

The 6-3, 250-pounder made 88 tackles with ten sacks, 15 tackles for loss, and broke up eight passes. With all his experience and all his skill, he’s about to be an all-star gamewrecker again.

It’s the MAC. It’s the conference where worst-to-first is the norm, with 2020 winless Northern Illinois winning the MAC championship in 2021, everyone can beat anyone else, and Toledo will end up somewhere in the middle of it all.

It’s about as settled as the league has been in a long time with the strength still in the West, Buffalo about to be better in the East, and with Akron and Bowling Green still questionable.

Again, though, it’s the MAC. The Zips or Falcons could end up in Detroit in January playing for the title.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

Toledo vs Central Michigan Game Preview, MAC Tournament

Why Central Michigan Will Win

It’s been a rough run for the Chippewas with eight losses in the last ninth games in the midst of an ugly season, but they pushed a strong Toledo team in a 68-66 loss in mid-February.

The defense isn’t all that bad at forcing mistakes, and the offense works as long as the backcourt is doing a good job of spreading the ball around and doing things quickly. Toledo’s defense doesn’t force mistakes and come up with turnovers, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Toledo Will Win

Central Michigan doesn’t do enough on defense to keep up.

The offense isn’t totally miserable. It’s not dangerous from the outside and it doesn’t do any one thing all that well, but the defenses allows teams to average 77 points per game and hit 41% of their shots – Toledo can shoot.

More than anything else, the Rockets should own the boards. Central Michigan can’t and doesn’t rebound, but it did in the second meeting and still lost. It was closer, but it still wasn’t enough.

Washington State vs Central Michigan Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl Preview

Central Michigan paid its ticket for the Arizona Bowl and it got an upgrade. Boise State couldn’t go, to the Chippewas moved from Tucson over to El Paso to get a shot at a Washington State team that’s had a wild and fun ride to get here.

The Cougars fought through their own adversity to win three of their last four games and six of their last eight. After all of the drama with former head coach Nick Rolovich, Washington State kept on winning, and it rewarded its coach by making Jake Dickert the full-time head man.

– The Cougars are going to throw and throw some more, but it’s all to control the clock and the tempo – they led the Pac-12 in time of possession.

The Chippewas are a whole lot of fun. They make big plays.

They make big plays on offense with the MAC’s second-best passing game. They make big plays on defense with the most sacks and plays in the backfield by anyone in the conference. They make big plays on special teams with the nation’s best punt return game.

Eastern Michigan vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

Is that really the Eastern Michigan running game?

The passing attack has been great throughout the season with the ground game along for the ride. In the stunning 22-21 win over Western Michigan two weeks ago, former UCF RB Jawon Hamilton ran for 187 yards as the team came up with a season-high 255 yards.

Central Michigan’s run D has been fine, but it gives up plenty of yards through the air. Eastern Michigan’s offense should be balanced, but …

Why Central Michigan Will Win

The Central Michigan O has been dominant.

The 39-38 loss to Northern Illinois was the killer for MAC West title hopes, but the Chippewas have won five of their other six games since early October with 200 yards both on the ground and through the air over the last two weeks.

Eastern Michigan doesn’t generate enough consistent pressure, the defense isn’t good on third downs, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Central Michigan will close out with a bang, making a statement that it might just be the second-best team in the MAC if Northern Illinois goes on to win the MAC Championship.

Both teams are bowl eligible with solid seven-win seasons – NIU is currently the only other MAC team with seven or more wins – so the pressure is off. This is just for a little bit if in-state MAC pride.

Central Michigan’s offense will be more effective, but the Eastern Michigan passing attack will make this a whole lot of fun.
