Former Seahawks RB Alex Collins has died at age 28

We at Seahawks Wire send our sincerest condolences and prayers to the Collins family at this time.

In a stunning and tragic news update late Monday evening, former Seattle Seahawks and Baltimore Ravens running back Alex Collins has died. He was just under two weeks away from his 29th birthday.

The Ravens announced it on their Twitter account, and the Seahawks reiterated heartbroken sentiments.

Collins was drafted by the Seahawks in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL draft. He found his footing in the league in Baltimore, rushing for a career-best 973 yards and six touchdowns during the 2017 season. Collins eventually returned to Seattle, where he played in 2020 and 2021.

This is a tragic story, and one where we do not have many details at this time. When more is known, we will update accordingly.

We at Seahawks Wire send our sincerest condolences and prayers to the Collins family at this time.

4 takeaways from the Seahawks’ 24-13 preseason win over Vikings

Week one of the 2023 preseason is officially in the books for the Seattle Seahawks

Week one of the 2023 preseason is officially in the books for the Seattle Seahawks, who treated the 12th Man to a 24-13 victory on Thursday night. For the first time since January, Seahawks football is back, and there is plenty to talk about.

Ultimately, there is not much substance to gleam from a preseason opener. It is typically rough, ungraceful football. But, it is football nonetheless, and there is plenty to talk about.

Below are 4 takeaways from Seattle’s first victory – exhibition or not – of the 2023 season.

Dee Eskridge suspension stems from domestic violence arrest in February

More clarity on the situation has been revealed.

On Friday, the 12th Man received a rather unpleasant news update involving Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Dee Eskridge. It was announced Eskridge would be suspended for the first six games of the 2023 season due to violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

Both the Seahawks and the league were rather mum on what the issue seemed to be. Even head coach Pete Carroll declined to discuss further when asked about the situation, stating they could not talk about it.

However, it appears some clarity has been shed from Eskridge’s agency that represents him. The suspension stems from an arrest from February. The full statement can be read below.

This is an ongoing situation and The Seahawks Wire will update accordingly for any new developments.

Seahawks WR Dee Eskridge suspended 6 games

A concerning development during a Friday afternoon news dump

In a concerning development during a Friday afternoon news dump, Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Dee Eskridge has been suspended the first six games of the season. This was first reported by NFL insider Ian Rapoport, and then confirmed by the Seahawks’ own public relations Twitter account.

Dee Eskridge was originally drafted in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft. Unfortunately, Eskridge has been unable to stay healthy or make much of an impact on the field when able to play. Eskridge’s lack of production helped prompt Seattle to draft Jaxon Smith-Njigba in the first round this past spring.

However, teammates have been singing Eskridge’s praises all offseason. Fellow receiver Tyler Lockett has even mentioned he looks explosive. Now Eskridge’s status with the Seahawks is up in the air, especially if law enforcement is getting involved.

We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.

Matt Daniels says it’s a “kicking competition” between Joseph and Podlesny

Despite being a solid kicker for the Vikings, it appears that Greg Joseph will still have to earn his starting spot.

When the Minnesota Vikings opened training camp, it seemed unlikely they would move away from Greg Joseph as their starting kicker.

Over two seasons with the Vikings, Joseph has developed into a reliable leg nearly automatic within 50 yards. Despite struggling past 50 yards last season (Joseph missed six kicks from this range), it seemed like the Vikings were well-positioned in the three specialist areas.

However, if special teams coordinator Mike Daniels’s comments are any indication, the Vikings have opened up a kicking competition. According to Sam Ekstrom of Locked On Minnesota, Daniels said it is a “kicking competition” between Joseph and undrafted rookie Jack Podlesny.

Podlesny was a standout kicker at the University of Georgia and quickly bloomed into one of the country’s most reliable legs. Over three seasons, Podlesny made around 80% of his field goals, including a career-high 83% last season.

With training camp still in its infancy, it’s possible that Daniels is just trying to keep Joseph motivated. However, it is something to watch as we head towards preseason.

Danielle Hunter officially reports to training camp

After a lot of speculation, Minnesota Vikings edge rusher Danielle Hunter reported to training camp on Tuesday.

After a lot of discussion about his contract situation, Minnesota Vikings outside linebacker Danielle Hunter has reported to training camp per head coach Kevin O’Connell.

It’s worth noting that O’Connell doesn’t expect him to participate right away due to being away from the team since the playoff loss to the New York Giants. This is likely Hunter reporting to camp to avoid fines but is holding in until he gets a contract resolution.

After amassing 10.5 sacks and 76 pressures in 2022, Hunter only has a $4.9 million base salary for the 2023 season, the final year of his contract. That should hopefully be rectified before the start of the season.

The Vikings veterans report to training camp on Tuesday with the first practice scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

NFL Free Agency: Frank Clark re-joins Russell Wilson with Broncos

A former Seattle Seahawks standout has found a new home in the Mile High city of Denver, Colorado. Hmm, this sounds a bit familiar

A former Seattle Seahawks standout has found a new home in the Mile High city of Denver, Colorado. Hmm, this sounds a bit familiar.

But no, I am not talking about Russell Wilson. This story is about former Seahawks and Chiefs defensive end finding his new NFL home. After four incredibly successful years with the Kansas City Chiefs – where he helped claim two Lombardi’s – Clark is now joining the division rival Broncos.

Clark started his career as a second round pick for the Seattle Seahawks all the way back in the 2015 NFL draft. Although he started slow, Clark became one of Seattle’s most dominant defenders, recording 10, 9 and 13 sacks his final three years in the Emerald City.

Before the start of the 2019 season, the Seahawks traded Clark to Kansas City in exchange for a first round pick and to gain cap flexibility.

Although he did not match any sack totals from the last three years in Seattle – the most he had was eight in his first year with the Chiefs – Clark made hay in the playoffs. He racked up 10.5 sacks in playoff games for Kansas City, pushing his career playoff total to 13.5 which is third most in NFL postseason history.

Now he rejoins his former quarterback in Denver, as the Broncos look to bounce back from the most disastrous season in franchise history.

3 Seahawks share a reminder of Tyler Lockett’s awesome consistency

Lockett is indisputably one of the best receivers in Seahawks history

For years now, the Seattle Seahawks have boasted one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL. While Ole Miss standout DK Metcalf makes plenty of headlines for his unique size and freakish athleticism, there is an argument to be made he might not even be the best receiver in Seattle.

That distinction could very well belong to Tyler Lockett, who has quietly worked his way into becoming an all time Seahawk. This isn’t me being a fan talking, the numbers back it up. Lockett is second all time in franchise history with 54 touchdowns, and is 520 yards away from being second in receiving yards.

Lockett has been able to climb the leaderboard thanks to a remarkable stretch in recent years. On Twitter, a reminder from user @Camd3n_10 went out about how Lockett is the only receiver to have at least 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns in the last four seasons. Lockett’s Seattle teammates certainly took notice and shared it to their feeds.

Tariq Woolen retweeted it.

Lockett’s great friend Quandre Diggs also took notice.

And fellow Seahawks receiver Cody Thompson as well.

Seahawks to wear throwback uniforms in Week 8 vs. Browns

Rejoice, 12’s!

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

Rejoice, 12’s!

After wishing and waiting for years to see the beloved Seattle Seahawks throwback uniforms in action, the time is coming soon. The Seahawks officially announced they will don the iconic royal blue and silver threads in Week 8 against the Cleveland Browns.

The Seahawks announced the throwbacks would be making their comeback last year during their Week 12 showdown with the Raiders. This was made possible by the NFL finally amending their one-helmet policy and allowing teams to have a second, alternate helmet.

Seattle wore the royal and silver uniforms from their inaugural season in 1976 until 2001. Aside from a few tweaks here or there, this was the look of the Seahawks – and to many older fans, still very much is.

It is interesting Seattle chose a Week 8 showdown with the Browns to unveil the uniforms. Cleveland has a classic, all-white retro uniform themselves. Perhaps the Browns will wear these in a sort of “turn-back-the-clock” themed Sunday afternoon?

Although Week 8 will mark the first time the Seahawks have worn these uniforms since 2001, it might not be the last this year. Team president Chuck Arnold hinted Seattle could wear these uniforms twice in 2023.

If this is the case, I predict it will be during the Thanksgiving Day game against the San Francisco 49ers. Just my speculation on the matter.

Pete Carroll on Geno Smith: ‘He is so determined’

Smith is refusing to let newfound wealth sink him into complacency.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

If anyone is concerned about Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith losing his “edge” after being paid a handsome extension, which will exponentially increase his lifetime NFL earnings, they should pay attention to how Smith is acting this offseason.

Smith has spoken at length about how he is not going to lose the chip on his shoulder, as well as discussing how he still welcomes competition even though he is slated to be the starter in the fall. Not to mention his workout videos shared online.

It seems Smith’s attitude about keeping his edge and staying focused, refusing to let newfound wealth sink him into complacency, is being noticed. When asked about his quarterback, head coach Pete Carroll had nothing but praise. From John Boyle at Seahawks.com:

“He is so determined, he’s got his eye on the ball the whole way now. He has been so consistent and available, and the messaging is so solid, it’s like, everyone needs to come along with him, he’s going. It has just been such a remarkable thing to watch the way he’s taken over the opportunity and how he commanded it so well last year. Then he has handled the success and the Pro Bowl and the offseason and the hype and all of that, and how he has answered it is with great work.”

If this does not get you confident in Smith moving forward, I’m not sure what will.
