Texas A&M lands former Cal State Northridge infielder Ali Camarillo Jr.

The Aggies have landed a big fish through the transfer portal, as former Cal State Northridge infielder Ali Camarillo is headed to Texas A&M.

Ahead of Texas A&M’s first-round matchup against Cal State Fullerton within the Stanford Regional in the 2023 NCAA Tournament on Friday night, massive transfer portal news made its way to head coach Jim Schlossnagle just hours before the game, as former Cal State Northridge standout infielder/shortstop Ali Camarillo will make his way to College Station this Fall to play for the Aggies in 2024.

In two seasons at CSUN, Camrillo broke out during his 2023 sophomore season, completing the campaign with a .371 batting average, seven home runs, and 44 RBI, netting a career average of .332 hitting, slugging .493 and a .398 OB%.

The core starters in A&M’s infield are expected to return outside senior Austin Bost. Still, as we’ve seen year by year, assumptions on how the roster will shape out are made up of guesses, so either way, Camrillo’s addition is impactful from a depth and possible starter perspective.

Congratulations, Ali! And as you’ll say a lot next season, Gig ‘Em!

No offense, no problem: Jac Caglianone, bullpen carry Florida to regional win

A win is a win. Florida’s offense wasn’t firing on all cylinders Friday night, but three runs was enough for Jac Caglianone and the bullpen to secure a win in the first round of the Gainesville Regional.

Florida’s offense no-showed on Friday night, but the Gators still came away with a 3-0 win over the Florida A&M Rattlers in the opening round of the 2023 Gainesville Regional.

The last time UF hosted FAMU, the Gators got things done in seven innings, outscoring the Rattlers, 17-7. Things seemed to be headed down the same path early when Josh Rivera blasted a two-run, no-doubt home run in the bottom of the first off Caleb Granger, but the Andrew College transfer held Florida in check for the rest of the night.

Granger allowed just two more hits through the next five innings, pitching successfully to contact. His one strikeout pales compared to Jac Caglianone’s seven, but the difference between the two was just the one pitch Rivera got ahold of.

Speaking of Caglianone, Kevin O’Sullivan got the good version of his dynamic two-way star tonight. Caglianone has looked really good for about a month or so, but that last start against a blazing-hot Vanderbilt team had some worried that the four-inning starts were back for good.

Have no fear. Caglianone went six scoreless, giving up just four hits and three walks. The plan early was simple: attack Florida A&M with the fastball. In fact, Caglianone threw 10 straight to start the game, and it worked!

The flamethrowing lefty cruised through the order the first time through, rarely mixing in any breaking balls or offspeed stuff. Caglianone began mixing in the slider the second time through, which threw off his fastball command a bit.

He regrouped by turning to the changeup, which has been his best pitch over the last month. He locates it well (low and outside), and it sets up a 97-99 mph heater for a punchout much better than the slider. If Caglianone is going to stay a starter longterm (think MLB), it’s that changeup that’s going to get him there. It’s been a work in progress all season, but the results are finally starting to show.

Unfortunately, Florida’s anemic offense meant that the team had to turn to some of its top bullpen arms on Day 1 of the Regional. Ryan Slater needed just 15 pitches to get through the seventh and eighth perfectly, and Brandon Neely earned his league-leading 11th save of the season.

Neely ran into a little trouble, giving up three hits to the Rattlers, but Richie Schiekofer and Rivera bailed him out each making a play at home. Perhaps there’s something to be said about the decision to send both runners, but FAMU needed to score and hadn’t had many chances all night.

Luke Heyman added a crucial insurance run for the Gators in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single to right field that scored Wyatt Langford.

Florida advances to play Texas Tech in the winner’s bracket on Saturday at 6 p.m. EDT. The Red Raiders will be the home team. Connecticut and Florida A&M will play the first elimination game of the Regional at noon.

Florida will go with either Brandon Sproat or Hurston Waldrep on the mound. Kyle Robinson is the starter for Texas Tech.

Photo Gallery: Ducks avoid Xavier upset in Nashville Regional

Photo Gallery: Oregon had plenty to be happy about after it rallied to defeat Xavier 5-4 in the Nashville Regional.

Xavier’s starting pitcher Brant Alazaus was on a roll. He retired 12 straight batters, was up 4-3 in the seventh, and had one out. Then Oregon’s Rikuu Nishida hit a fly ball over the head of left fielder Andrew Walker to be in scoring position.

Alazaus had 105 pitches under his belt and Musketeer coach Billy O’Connor felt that was enough and went to his bullpen. That decision might have cost Xavier as Colby Shade and Drew Cowley also doubled to give the Ducks the 5-4 lead.

Fortunately, Oregon’s bullpen came through whereas Xavier’s didn’t. The Ducks won by that score and will now play either Vanderbilt or Eastern Illinois on Saturday at 3 pm PST.

Texas baseball advances past Louisiana behind great defense, 4-2

Clutch play by Lucas Gordon and Dylan Campbell helps Texas past Louisiana to the winner’s bracket.

The Texas Longhorns brought quality baseball to Coral Gables for its first NCAA Tournament game. Behind clutch pitching and fielding, Texas did just enough to move into the winner’s bracket.

The great performance begins with staff ace Lucas Gordon who bounced back from a tough outing in the Big 12 Tournament a week earlier. Gordon allowed just one run on five hits through seven innings. He put up eight strikeouts without allowing a walk.

Gordon had tremendous defense behind him from the Texas outfield. Early in the game, center fielder Eric Kennedy robbed what would have been a three-run home run to escape the fourth inning tied 0-0.

The defensive highlight of the day came from right fielder Dylan Campbell. His diving catch running toward the right field boundary erased what could have been an extra base hit.

Campbell had the most notable hitting performance of the day with two runs batted in and two hits. His double in the sixth inning extended his hitting streak to 36 consecutive games breaking the Big 12 hitting streak record.

With the win, Texas improves to 1-5 in games at neutral sites on the year. The team will now face the winner between Miami and Maine in the winner’s bracket.

LSU coach Jay Johnson explains decision to start Paul Skenes in regional win over Tulane

Skenes tossed 124 pitches in a complete game on Friday, allowing LSU to entirely preserve its bullpen.

The Tigers began the Baton Rouge Regional on Friday by easily dispatching Tulane, 7-2, behind a complete-game performance from ace pitcher [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag].

The decision to start Skenes came as a bit of a surprise considering coaches often opt to save their best arms for tougher matchups later in the regional. However, after the game, coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] said that the decision to start Skenes over [autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] or [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] was an easy one.

Skenes, who threw 124 pitches in the first nine-inning complete game of his career, told the media that his ability to go the distance preserved LSU’s bullpen moving forward. Johnson confirmed this was the primary motivation behind giving Skenes the start.

Only time will tell if the decision to start Skenes was the right one, but for now, LSU is 1-0 as it awaits the result of Game 2 between Oregon State and Sam Houston State.

Oregon Ducks Regional Preview: Vanderbilt Commodores

An outstanding March where they finished 18-2, Vanderbilt earned its No. 6 national seed by winning the SEC tournament.

When it comes to the NCAA baseball tournament, having a regional in Nashville is pretty much a sure thing.

Vanderbilt has hosted a regional nine times and the Commodores are making their 17th straight postseason appearance. Vandy, as the No. 6 national seed, would host a Super Regional should it advance.

The Commodores finished second in the SEC West Division with a 19-11 record, one game behind Florida. But Vandy was able to win the SEC tournament, including an 11-6 win in the semifinals before beating Texas A&M for the title.

That victory solidified Vanderbilt’s national seed and gave it an overall mark of 40-18. Nearly half of those wins came in March where Vandy got on a major roll and finished 18-2 for the month.

Surprisingly, not one Commodore player was an All-SEC First-Teamer, but three made the Second Team (outfielder Enrique Bradfield Jr., starting pitcher Devin Futrell and reliever Nick Maldonado) with two making the All-Defensive Team (Bradfield and third baseman Davis Diaz) and RJ Austin was on the All-Freshman squad.

Austin, a second baseman, finished the regular season with a .267 batting average with seven home runs and 42 runs batted in. Vandy is led by RJ Scheck with his .309 average, 13 homers and 57 RBIs.

Bradfield hit .286 for the season with six homers and 33 RBIs. Futrell, who is likely to start in Game 1 of the regional, was 7-3 with a 3.44 earned run average. Maldonado was the Commodores’ closer as he had eight saves and a 1.45 ERA.

Vanderbilt isn’t going to outslug anyone, but it’s not going to beat itself either in the field. The Commodores made just 38 errors all season. By comparison, Oregon, which is considered a very good defensive team, committed 50 errors.

The Nashville Regional begins for Vanderbilt at 4 pm PST as they play 4-seed Eastern Illinois on the SEC Network.

LSU beats Tulane in Game 1 of the Baton Rouge Regional

Paul Skenes pitched the first nine-inning complete game in his career as the Tigers took down their in-state rival.

Much to the surprise of many, [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] got the start on the mound for Game 1 of the Baton Rouge Regional against 19-40 Tulane.

We’ll see if that pays off in the long run for coach Jay Johnson and the Tigers, but it certainly did on Friday as they opened their NCAA tournament run with a 7-2 win to advance to the winners’ bracket.

LSU drew first blood in the bottom of the first inning when [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] scored on a [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] RBI double to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Tigers tacked on two more runs when [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] scored on an RBI double and [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] scored on an RBI groundout by [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] to make it 3-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, Travinski scored on an RBI groundout by Jobert to give LSU a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, LSU scored two runs off of two sacrifice flyouts to score [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] and Travinski to make it 6-0 Tigers after 5 innings.

In the top of the seventh inning, Tulane finally got on the board with a two-run homer off of Skenes to cut the lead to 6-2.

LSU loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning and Travinski walked to score another run to make the score 7-2 LSU as we headed to the ninth inning.

Skenes stayed on the mound to start the ninth inning as he looked to pitch his first complete game. Skenes retired the hitters 1-2-3 as he pitched the first nine-inning complete game of his career. His final stat line was nine innings pitched as he allowed two runs on seven hits, zero walks and 12 strikeouts.

LSU moves on to the winners’ bracket to face the victor of Friday night’s matchup between Oregon State/Sam Houston State on Saturday.
