All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Arkansas (0-0) vs Rice (0-0) Game Preview

Why Rice Will Win

The Owls have to control the clock and keep the chains moving, and it all starts on the offensive front.

They don’t have a dominant group returning, but it’s going to be one of the best in Conference USA with all five starters back to go along with a nice mix of depth and size to keep everyone fresh. The line has to be better at keeping defenses out of the backfield, but the ground game should work around a quick young group of backs.

On the other side, can the Rice run defense keep it all going? With eight of the top nine tacklers back, yeah.

It was only a five-game 2020 for the program, but the front three held up well for a D that didn’t allow more than 140 rushing yards in a game. Speaking of defensive experience …

CFN Preseason Rankings, Schedules, Projected Records For All 130 Teams

Why Arkansas Will Win

After years of building and rebuilding, and after a year of getting things in place under head coach Sam Pittman, the guys are there to be a whole lot better defensively.

Barry Odom is a whale of a defensive coordinator, and he’s got the guys to step up right away with a terrific linebacking corps, a whole lot of defensive backs who took their lumps in 2020, and in all, ten players with regular starting experience back.

As long as the Hogs can get up early – the passing game should take a few shots with a good-looking receiving corps and TE Hudson Henry – the D will take care of the rest. This isn’t enough Rice firepower to keep up.

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

Rice is going to be plucky.

Arkansas will get up in the first quarter, but it’ll struggle to push ahead as a few first half drives stall and a couple of turnovers lead to Owl points.

The production will kick in as the second half goes on. The Hog defense will settle in, QB KJ Jefferson will get into a rhythm, and there won’t be a whole lot of drama with the final score looking worse than the actual game.

2021 CFN SEC Preseason Rankings: East

1. Georgia Bulldogs

Quick Take: Georgia has recruited as well as anyone, it has the quarterback in JT Daniels, and the defense is as strong as any in America. There aren’t any real excuses – it’s all there to win the SEC Championship and potentially the national title.
Georgia Preview | Schedule

2. Florida Gators

Quick Take: The pressure will be off a bit after a phenomenal 2020 0 it should all be on Georgia in the East. It’s a stretch to call this a rebuilding year, but it’s asking a whole lot to get the passing game going like that again. The Gators are still more than good enough to shoot for at least another East title.
Florida Preview | Schedule

3. Kentucky Wildcats

Quick Take: It’s a rock-solid team that’s going to try to be a bit more explosive. The defense is sound, the running game will be good, and the coaching is top-drawer. Around a fantastic linebacking corps and great O line, the Cats will make some noise.
Kentucky Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532470]

4. Tennessee Volunteers

Quick Take: Josh Heupel has to get the offense going. As long as the Vols start to show more explosion and bring hope to the fan base, it’ll be a good year. There are enough good skill parts around a strong line to expect a quick improvement.
Tennessee Preview | Schedule

5. Missouri Tigers

Quick Take: After getting up to speed under Eliah Drinkwitz, now the Tigers are supposed to be far more consistent and efficient. The linebackers and D line will be the biggest plus, but the O needs to be more dangerous.
Missouri Preview | Schedule

6. South Carolina Gamecocks

Quick Take: Give it time. New head coach Shane Beamer should have a decent starting 22, and the team will be competitive, but it’s going to take a year to start building this all up. The defensive line and running game are good enough to beat the mediocre teams.
South Carolina Preview | Schedule

7. Vanderbilt Commodores

Quick Take: It’s going to be a long climb for new head coach Clark Lea. The receiving corps is good, and the secondary should grow into a plus. It’ll take something big to get an SEC win, but the Commodores miss most of the big boys from the West.

2021 Preseason CFN SEC Offensive Player of the Year

RB Kevin Harris, Jr. South Carolina

It was impossible to put together the SEC Top 30 Players list – it could’ve been a top 50 list and several great players would’ve been missing – and it’s just as nasty to try coming up with one signature preseason offensive star going into the season.

Texas A&M is loaded with weapons, Georgia will have its share of stars, and of course Alabama will replace the former all-time greats with new ones. For now, going into the season, Harris is the safe call – knowing that another Joe Burrow, or DeVonta Smith, or Mac Jones is right around the corner.

And there’s a chance Harris doesn’t even have to handle all the work with the expected return of MarShawn Lloyd from a knee injury. Even so, the 5-10, 225-pound Harris is a proven star for a team that needs as many reliable parts as it can get.

Harris ran for an SEC-best 114 rushing yards per game with 1,138 yards and 15 scores averaging over six yards per carry, and at least early on under Shane Beamer, he’s going to be the one to work the attack around.

2021 Preseason CFN SEC Defensive Player of the Year

CB Derek Stingley Jr., Soph. LSU

You’re going to probably need to go off of respect and sheer talent when it comes to acknowledging – arguably – the best player in college football this season. The future likely NFL Pro Bowl star might not have a whole lot to do with team after team staying away from him.

Blow off the stats – or the lack of them – going forward. He only made 27 tackles with five broken up passes and no picks last year, and that might be around what he does this season. The better passing teams will go at him once in a while – Eli Ricks is no picnic on the other side – but not often.

Arkansas Razorbacks College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The offense was a wee bit better than the versions of the previous seasons, but it sure looked a lot more interesting . The new Arkansas coaching staff had Feleipe Franks at quarterback, the passing game was more efficient, and averaging 392 yards and 26 points per game wasn’t bad.

Now the offensive line has to be better in pass protection, a third down conversion would be nice, and controlling the clock just a wee bit more – even though that’s not the style under offensive coordinator Kendal Briles – has to happen at some point.

It starts with that O line. Head coach Sam Pittman is an offensive line coach by trade, and his group is experienced, if not fantastic. All five starters are expected to be back – guard Brady Latham is the best of the bunch – and now the production has to be there. The running backs have to do their part, too.

Trelon Smith was solid – rushing for 710 yards and five touchdowns with a 5.3 yard average – but he needs to be part of a rotation. He’s only 5-9 and 190 pounds, and the depth is very young and relatively untested. 6-1, 240-pound Dominique Johnson brings some thump, and Raheim Sanders – known as Rocket – will help the cause.

The season is all about QB KJ Jefferson. The talented 6-3, 240-pound passer has the arm and the upside to grow into a star, and now it’s his offense to run. There isn’t a veteran Plan B – at least not yet – if Jefferson isn’t terrific. Fortunately, the receivers are there to make everything go.

It stinks that second-leading receiver Mike Woods took off for Oklahoma, but the Hogs got their own Sooner with OU transfer Jaquayin Crawford appearing to be a keeper.

There’s a good-looking tight end in Hudson Henry, and Trey Knox and De’Vion Warren could be strong if they can stay healthy, but there’s no question who the No. 1 main man is.

Treylon Burks is going to be among the SEC’s best receivers with 6-3, 225-pound size, good deep play ability, and the toughness to be a matchup nightmare.

Arkansas vs Oral Roberts Game Preview

Why Oral Roberts Will Win

The team just won’t quit.

The Golden Eagles were getting rolled by Florida, it looked like an obvious 7-over-15 mismatch, and then everything flipped in the stunning 81-78 win coming off the overtime shocker over Ohio State.

They’re not hitting the threes at a high clip, but they’re taking so many that it works – keep firing and they’re bound to go in. They play such a fast style of game that there are plenty of shots, lots of opportunities, and plenty of chances – especially when they’re shooting 46% from the field like they did against the Gators.

Arkansas is more than happy to play an up-tempo game, and it’ll screw up just enough to help Oral Roberts out.

The Hogs limited the turnovers so far in the tournament, but they’re usually good for a last 13 an outing. Converting on them is a must, because …

2021 NCAA Tournament Schedule, Predictions

Why Arkansas Will Win

This team just won’t quit.

Texas Tech was able to grind things down to its level, but the Hogs were able to battle through were tough on the boards, and they made the key plays down the stretch in a 68-66 fight.

But they’d rather get moving.

This is very controlled but very fast team that doesn’t rely on the three, but it takes them. Like Oral Roberts, it’s a bit more of a quantity over quality thing when it comes to the outside, but this team can do just about everything right.

There might be too many turnovers, but the rebounding is there to potentially dominate at both ends. It didn’t matter in the first two games of the tournament, but Oral Roberts was outrebounded by Ohio State and Florida by a combined 68-50.

What’s Going To Happen

Oral Roberts will stay around for about 15 minutes, and then the Hogs will start to pull away.

The two teams played back in late December with Arkansas winning 87-76 thanks to a huge second half. The Golden Eagles were up 40-30 at the half, and then it was all Hogs in the second.

The rebounding advantage? Arkansas 54-29. It won’t be quite that bad this time around, but Arkansas will make just about everything from the field when it has to, and it’ll grab the boards when it misses.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Arkansas vs Texas Tech Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Texas Tech Will Win

The Red Raider defense is really just that good.

The best scoring D in the Big 12 showed up large against a Utah State team that was the media pick 11-seed darling when the brackets were first announced.

Texas Tech allowed the Aggies to do okay on the inside in the 65-53 win, but it got out and stopped just about everything from three – and it helped that Utah State couldn’t hit a free throw and the D struggled in the second half.

Arkansas had to battle for about 30 minutes against Colgate before pulling away in an 85-68 win, and now it’s going to have to handle Texas Tech’s style.

There are usually too many turnovers and too many fouls – although the Hogs limited both against the Raiders – and unlike Colgate, the Red Raiders will be able to slow things down when needed.

2021 NCAA Tournament Schedule, Predictions

Why Arkansas Will Win

Yeah, Colgate provide a push and got all of Twitter fired up, and …

Arkansas won by 17.

Texas Tech was fantastic offensively when it had to be against Utah State, but  it’s not built to keep up if and when the Hogs get their offense in gear.

They’re going to want to keep everything moving and get up and down the floor in a hurry, and they’re going to maximize their possessions by keeping the pressure on at both ends all game long.

As good as the Red Raider defense is, it’s usually just okay at guarding the three and the Hogs will keep firing.  They’re 10-0 this year when making nine threes or more, but …

College Basketball Experts Picks For Arkansas vs Texas Tech

What’s Going To Happen

Arkansas has to be red hot in this to pull it out. If the threes are falling, it wins. If they aren’t, the Texas Tech defense will be tough enough to pull this off.

Comps are always dangerous, but Arkansas lost its one Big 12 game to Oklahoma State – it only made five threes – and Texas Tech won its lone SEC game beating LSU, even though the Tiger O was on from the outside.

Arkansas can play defense, too, but the Red Raiders will play the grinding game in the clutch a wee bit better.

Arkansas vs Colgate Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Colgate Will Win

Don’t think for a second that the NCAA Tournament committee didn’t know what it was doing with the 3-14.

Who better to throw at a fun Arkansas team than an equally entertaining Colgate squad that scores and scores and scores some more.

The Raider defense isn’t bad, either – it leads the nation in three point field goal percentage D – but it’s that offense that will keep shooting from three, keep making from three, and it’ll get on the move with a high-octane style that won’t blink against an Arkansas team that loves to do the same thing.

However …

2021 NCAA Tournament Schedule, Predictions

Why Arkansas Will Win

Arkansas does it better.

Not to conference shame or anything, but it’s cute and all when you’re putting up 95 on a Holy Cross or a 105 to slip past a Bucknell, and it’s another to be No. 1 in the SEC in scoring.

The Hogs are great from three, better on the free throw line, and they would love nothing more than to be able to go full throttle and attack the Colgate team that doesn’t turn the ball over all that often, but will see more defensive pressure than they have all season long.

What’s Going To Happen

You want to have some fun? Check this out for at least a half.

The two teams really do play D, but they’re going to want to play this in the 80s, and Colgate will be happy to keep bombing away from three and hope to catch lightning in a bottle.

The Raiders will make this fun, and they’ll get Twitter buzzing, and then  the 18-2 run will come as Arkansas moves on.
