Arizona vs Colorado Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win

Just when it seemed like Arizona might be slipping a wee bit after a 84-81 fight against Oregon … boom.

The Wildcats went to Utah and came away with a dominant 20-point win. They continue to be amazing fro the field, they’re stepping up from three, and they’re great on the boards.

Colorado is dangerous, but it’s erratic.

It can get hot, but it’s not strong enough on a regular basis from three, there are way too many turnovers, and the D doesn’t force enough mistakes to slow down the Arizona attack. But …

Why Colorado Will Win

The Buffaloes are sneaky-dangerous.

They might not be consistent from three, but they’re making what they’re taking – they’ve won their last six games when they hit more than 40% from three.

Arizona has the defense to clamp down from the outside, but if Colorado can be decent from three, and if the rebounding isn’t all that off – with better than -5 – there’s a chance that …

What’s Going To Happen

Can Colorado really be good enough at home to pull this off?

It’ll be strong enough to keep it interesting for a while, but Arizona is too strong on the boards and will be too good at guarding the three.

Yeah, Colorado wins when it hits 40% or better from three.

Arizona hasn’t let anyone get to 40% from outside since January 25th.

Arizona vs Utah Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win

Good luck slowing down the Arizona offensive machine at the moment.

It was already a strong team from the field throughout the season, but now it’s more consistent, the threes are falling, and the assists are off the charts.

Again, there wasn’t any problem scoring throughout the first part of the season, but the team is settling in and playing some of its best offensive basketball with 20 assists or more in four of the last five games to go along with the threes falling to go along with lots and lots and lots of rebounds.

Arizona is still No. 1 in the nation in rebounds and it’s No. 1 in assists per game.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Utah Will Win

Utah has cranked up the defense.

It’s been a struggle, but it’s now on its first two-game winning streak since back in mid-November because the D has been brilliant.

The Utes are second in the Pac-12 at stopping the three, they’re holding teams to under 40% from the field over the last few games, and they’re not all that bad on the boards. They’re not going to beat Arizona in rebounding margin, but they should be able to hold up.

The goal is to somehow keep this close and rely on the great free throw shooting to pull this off. But …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona rolled 82-54 in the first meeting even though Utah hit all 12 of its free throws.

Yeah, the Ute defense has been great on the road lately, but Stanford and Cal aren’t Arizona.

The Wildcats will to a great job of keeping everything moving, they’ll get to 20 assists, and they’ll hit at least 50% from the field in a business-like road win.

Arizona vs Oregon Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

It’s been a rough run lately, but the Ducks haven’t been all that bad from the field this season. It’s not going to bomb away from three, but it can work the ball inside, it’s not bad at forcing mistakes, and it’s been decent at guarding the three.

It has to slow things down a wee bit and can’t get into a rebounding battle, but as long as the offense is hitting at least 41% from the field, it’s got a shot.

Oregon is 11-1 in the last 12 games when it makes 41% or more of its shots, and it’s 0-2 when it doesn’t. However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Arizona Will Win

Oregon can’t hit anything from three lately and it’s getting killed on the boards.

Washington State was about to come up with 18 offensive rebounds, Utah had 13, and now the Ducks have to deal with the best rebounding team in college basketball.

Arizona is the best team in college basketball. It might not be ranked that way, but it’s playing at the highest all-around level.

No one comes up with more assists per game, no one generates more rebounds, and only two teams score more. The Cats are hitting everything from the field, the three are good enough, and rebounds, rebounds, rebounds.

And …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Just forget about getting Arizona at home right now.

USC lost by nine, and that’s as close as anyone has come all year to the Wildcats in McKale.

Oregon is a decent road team, but it won’t shoot well enough and it won’t come up with enough rebounds. It’ll take a perfect game for the Ducks to pull this off, and it won’t be able to do it.

Arizona Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Wildcats miss from the Pac-12 North Division?

There aren’t a whole lot of teams in the Pac-12 North that Arizona would too excited to miss, but not getting Oregon State and Stanford is a slight disappointment.

It would’ve been nice to miss Oregon, but that’s a home game in early October. Washington State is on the slate, but at least the Wildcats don’t have to go to Pullman in late November, and playing Washington in Seattle on October 15th and Cal on September 24th shouldn’t matter weather-wise.

Arizona Football Schedule What To Know: Where are the wins?

It’s a rebuilding process in Year Two of the Jedd Fisch era, but … come ON.

Going to San Diego State as the first opponent in the new era of Aztec football – it’s opening up the brand new Snapdragon Stadium – isn’t good. Hosting Mississippi State and North Dakota State isn’t exactly a plus, either.

Considering the non-conference slate, there’s the home game against Colorado. That might be the only game outside of the visit from NDSU that Arizona might be favored in.

Arizona Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Start with the positives. The Wildcats get a whole lot of teams in Tucson.

After going to San Diego State, four of the next five games are at home, the last two – including Arizona State – is in Arizona Stadium, and the midseason run of three road games in four dates is broken up with a week off.

It’s still going to be a heavy lift to get anywhere close to six wins and bowl eligibility.

Arizona vs Oregon State Game Preview

Why Oregon State Will Win

Let’s just say Oregon State is having a few problems in its 3-20 season.

However, for all of the issues, there have been moments when the three point shooting is there, the team can get to the free throw line just enough to matter, and it’s not all that bad at forcing turnovers.

There’s absolutely no pressure on whatsoever. Slow this down, keep bombing away from three, and …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Arizona Will Win

It’s not like Oregon State is losing; it’s getting destroyed in game after game.

There was a close fight against Cal a few days ago, but that’s been about it. Just about everyone else has been able to roll at will in blowouts against a defense that’s not slowing anyone down.

Arizona will destroy the Beavers on the boards, it’ll be able to score inside and out, and there won’t be any real concerns about getting hit with a fluky day from the outside – Oregon State has only hit double-digit threes once, and that was back in mid-November.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Just how much will Arizona get up for this?

It should be able to go on a quick early run to make Oregon State press a bit with the offense, but the scoring pop on the other side just isn’t there. Arizona should be able to answer any possible threat quickly, but there shouldn’t be any drama – the rebounding margin should take care of that.

Arizona vs Washington Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win

Rebounds, rebounds, rebounds.

For all of the great things this Arizona team does, it’s ability to dominate on the boards is the most important.

The offense keeps on moving the ball around well, the offense is hitting its shots inside and out, and the defense has been just fine over this five-game winning streak. The rebounds for the No. 1 team in the nation in boards per game are the difference.

As is they’re shooting great, and then throw in the offensive rebounds that come in bunches – ten or more in six of the last seven games.

Washington struggles on the board and only comes up with 22 defensive rebounds per game.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Washington Will Win

So how do the Huskies pull this off? They have to hang with Arizona shot for  shot and can’t miss.

There’s a night-and-day difference with this team when they’re shooting well and when they’re not. When they’re hitting 42% or more of their shots, they’re 8-0. They’re 4-9 when they don’t, but they were close in the first meeting with the Wildcats hitting 41% from the field in the 95-79 loss.

They can’t be afraid to keep taking threes to try keeping up, and while they’re not great overall on the boards, they’re decent on the offensive glass and have to come up with second-chance points. They got 11 in the first meeting against this great rebounding team and …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Nah, Washington won’t be able to keep up.

Arizona might need a little while to get going, and Washington will hang around a bit as it starts bombing away from the outside, but it won’t be able to handle the interior.

Arizona won the rebounding battle 42-29 in the first meeting, and it’ll be about that bad this time around, too.

Why Arizona Will Win

The Wildcats have started dominating again.

It might take a spurt or two to get there, but they’re shooting the lights out, rebounding everything, and they’re playing better than anyone in America – at least anyone who’s playing a big conference schedule.

They lead the nation in assists and rebounds, they’re second in the nation in defensive field goal percentage, and they’re doing everything right over the four-game winning run since the loss at UCLA.

Why Washington State Will Win

For all of the great things Arizona does defensively, it’s just okay at guarding the three. Washington State is better at it.

Wazzu is a true 3-and-D team, and it’s working. Colorado has been the only team to get to seven points on the Cougar D since early December.

Teams might be able to hit from the field on this group, but they’re not doing enough from three, and that Colorado team that hung up 83 back in early January was stoned for just 43 points in Friel Court at Beasley.

This is a frustrating team to deal with. if the threes are falling, there’s a big, big problem. However …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Washington State’s best win was … Arizona State? That was back on December 1st when the defense held the Sun Devils to 29 points.

To pull this off, the Cougars have to hit ten threes. They’re 9-1 when they do, 5-6 when they don’t, and now they’re stepping up the competition by a mile.

They’re not going to rebound all that well, but the defense and style will clamp down just enough to keep this close until late.

Arizona vs Arizona State Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win

The Wildcats are on a roll.

They have one tough run against UCLA on the road a few weeks ago, and they couldn’t quite get out of Tennessee in late December, and that’s been it.

The team has been brilliant both inside and out – at least when it feels like taking threes – the defense has been stellar, and everything else is clicking.

Arizona State doesn’t really score.

Sure, it was great in the three overtimes against UCLA on Saturday, but for the most part this isn’t a good enough shooting team from three, and it can’t hang punch for punch when it comes to the efficiency of possessions. However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Arizona State Will Win

Forget the 7-13 record. This is a good team that battled well in the 67-56 loss to Arizona several days ago. It was able to grind down USC, and it managed to do just enough to hang on for dear life against UCLA for one of the season’s most stunning wins.

It’s cliché, but there’s no quit in this team.

It’s passing the ball around well, it’s scrapping on the boards, and it plays a nasty brand of defense, especially from three.

Arizona, USC – in the second game against the Trojans – and UCLA all combined to hit just 14-of-69 from three over the last three games.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Can Arizona State find that same magic two games in a row?

It beat UCLA because the D was terrific when it absolutely had to be, and the O hit 40% from the field.

Arizona State is 5-3 when getting to 40%, and 1-10 when it doesn’t. With its style of play, there just aren’t enough opportunities to afford a whole slew of misses.

Only six teams have been able to get to 40% from the field against Arizona. Arizona State won’t make it seven, but it’ll battle hard at home and give the Cats another defensive fight.

USC vs Arizona Game Preview

Why USC Will Win

To hang with Arizona you have to be able to keep up on the boards.

Not a problem. Arizona is among the best teams in the country and on top of the Pac-12 in total rebounds, but USC leads the nation in rebounds per game.

You also need an inside presence and be able to attack the rim on the move. USC doesn’t shoot a whole ton of threes – but it makes them when it does – because it’s too good on the inside.

USC has a way of controlling games with its style and its tempo, and it should be able to keep Arizona from going on the big runs. Throw in the team’s ability to keep the fouls to a minimum, and it might have the right style.

Arizona is used to making at least 12 free throws a game. No one has made more than nine against USC in any of the last four because the team just doesn’t hack enough. But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Arizona Will Win

Arizona has a way of getting teams out to its comfort zone.

It was able to push past UCLA with a big second half run on Thursday night. It might not be great from three on a consistent basis, but it’s a brilliant team at making the extra pass for points on one end, and getting the interior defense on the other to force teams to hit from the outside.

USC’s comfort zone is to rely on the three after the inside game is working. If it has to start cranking up shots from the outside in bunches, it’s in trouble.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona got its groove back against UCLA.

USC has to dominate the rebounding margin, and it won’t. It has to own the inside, and it won’t. Arizona will get pushed by one of the nation’s best defenses, and it’s going to make this a fight until late.

UCLA vs Arizona Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

What did UCLA do that was so right in the 75-59 win over Arizona two weeks ago?

It got out to a big start, Arizona couldn’t get the O going, and the Bruins kept pushing. But it was more than that.

UCLA hit half of its shots against the second-best defense in America.

Everything was working inside and out, the defense held the Wildcats to just 31% from the field, and this time around it has to stay just as hot and not allow the best rebounding team in college basketball to control things by forcing one-and-dones.

There wasn’t any need for offensive rebounds in the first game – UCLA just didn’t miss – but it’s got the ability to hold its own and come up with a few second chance points.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Arizona Will Win

UCLA isn’t going to be that amazing again from the field.

It’s not like it was a total aberration – the Bruins have hit 50% or better from the field six times – but the defense is too good on the inside.

The 47% on three that UCLA connected on was by a mile the best day anyone has had from the outside against the Wildcats. Once you start getting into volume shooting against them, forget it.

Yes, the Bruins can hit the offensive boards, but Arizona should be able to dominate for stretches up front.

There’s one big concern, though …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Where are the Arizona threes?

The team is coming off its two worst shooting games of the year – UCLA and then in a fight against a mediocre Arizona State – and that’s coming from not being able to do anything from the outside hitting just 10-of-51 in the two games.

The Cats got away with it by living on the free throw line against ASU, but UCLA isn’t going to foul enough to matter.

Even so, at home in one of the games of the Pac-12 season, Arizona will find its shooting ability at times in the second half, the defense will be inspired after the problems the first time around, and this time around the rebounding margin will play a much bigger role.
