Arizona vs Utah Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win

The Arizona offense has been a whole lot of fun.

It’s amazing what a decent offensive line and a few playmakers can do. Compared to last season, the Wildcats are phenomenal with well over 1,000 yards of total offense over the last two games against Washington and USC.

The passing game is hitting the big plays, the ground game was able to rip off a few big runs against USC, and the O overall is just dangerous enough to make the Utah defense work.

There’s one giant problem though …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Utah Will Win

The weather.

It’s going to be in the 70s and sunny on Saturday in Tucson. It’s going to be about 40ish and raining in Salt Lake City when the ball is kicked off.

Arizona’s offense might be fun, but it’s not too much about the power. Utah can do that.

There’s no reason to make this difficult in any way. Utah will grind it out, keep pounding, and it’ll average close to six yards per carry against a Wildcat run defense that’s among the worst in the country.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

In the lousy conditions the Utah offensive front that’s already great in pass protection and solid for the ground game will take over.

Arizona will have a few drives when the passing game clicks. There just won’t be enough of them to overcome a few key turnovers and make up for a massive time of possession disparity.

Arizona vs Utah Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win

Good luck slowing down the Arizona offensive machine at the moment.

It was already a strong team from the field throughout the season, but now it’s more consistent, the threes are falling, and the assists are off the charts.

Again, there wasn’t any problem scoring throughout the first part of the season, but the team is settling in and playing some of its best offensive basketball with 20 assists or more in four of the last five games to go along with the threes falling to go along with lots and lots and lots of rebounds.

Arizona is still No. 1 in the nation in rebounds and it’s No. 1 in assists per game.

However …

Why Utah Will Win

Utah has cranked up the defense.

It’s been a struggle, but it’s now on its first two-game winning streak since back in mid-November because the D has been brilliant.

The Utes are second in the Pac-12 at stopping the three, they’re holding teams to under 40% from the field over the last few games, and they’re not all that bad on the boards. They’re not going to beat Arizona in rebounding margin, but they should be able to hold up.

The goal is to somehow keep this close and rely on the great free throw shooting to pull this off. But …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona rolled 82-54 in the first meeting even though Utah hit all 12 of its free throws.

Yeah, the Ute defense has been great on the road lately, but Stanford and Cal aren’t Arizona.

The Wildcats will to a great job of keeping everything moving, they’ll get to 20 assists, and they’ll hit at least 50% from the field in a business-like road win.

Why Arizona Will Win

The offensive backfield should be settled and solid. QB Grant Gunnell and RB Gary Brightwell are great players to work around. The offense might not have worked well last year, but that was partly because the line was never quite healthy or right – that should be different for the opener.

The other side of the ball won’t be a brick wall, but the linebacking corps has hitters – even with Colin Schooler gone to Texas Tech – and the secondary should be stronger.

The Utah defense has even more parts to replace on its defensive side, and the offensive backfield is starting over, but …

Why Utah Will Win

The offensive line is going to be fantastic.

The quarterback situation is still being kept relatively under wraps, and Zack Moss is gone so Devin Brumfield has to step up at running back, but the receiving corps is going to be terrific and again, the line is going to be rushing.

Yeah, the defense is replacing almost all of the top tacklers, but there’s bulk on the line and the linebacking corps around Devin Lloyd is going to be loaded. It’s Utah. the defense is going to be great going against an Arizona offense that – over the last few years – is going to be still trying to find something that consistently works.

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona’s offense will be better, but Utah will start out blasting away and will keep on doing it for a full 60 minutes. It’s all going to be about the lines in the opener – Utah’s will be far, far stronger.
