Arizona vs Hawaii Fearless Prediction, Game Preview, Preseason Version

Arizona vs Hawaii early preseason fearless prediction and game preview.

Arizona vs Hawaii early preseason fearless prediction and game preview.

How crazy is it to try predicting a college football season months in advance when 1) there wasn’t any spring ball, 2) there aren’t any real depth charts to go off of, 3) and we don’t even know what the 2020 season is going to be?

Just crazy enough to potentially get some fantastic values on the early lines.

You can bet now at BetMGM on a whole lot of college football games – including going really insane looking at lines in November – with the possibility of hitting something big. So  …

Arizona vs Hawaii Game Preview: Preseason Version

Why Hawaii Will Win

Seriously … how much better do you think the Arizona defense is going to be with no offseason to get better after finishing dead last in the Pac-12 in total defense, scoring defense, and sacks?

Eight starters are expected to return, but there’s still a whole lot of work to do against a Hawaii team that’s still going to wing it all around the yard under new head coach Todd Graham.

The Rainbow Warriors might have lost QB Cole McDonald early to the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, but Chevan Cordeiro is back along with seven other starters. The machine doesn’t stop.

Why Arizona Will Win

Seriously … how much better do you think the Hawaii defense is going to be with no offseason to get better after finishing dead last in the Mountain West in tackles for loss and after giving up 431 yards and 32 points per game?

Five starters have to be replaced on the Rainbow Warrior D, and despite the loss of QB Khalil Tate and RB JJ Taylor, the Arizona offense should be solid from the start with a young line potentially emerging fast and a decent group of receivers for QB Grant Gunnell to play around with.

What’s Going To Happen

It was one of the best games of last season, and it happened right out of the gate.

Hawaii couldn’t stop giving the ball away, Khalil Tate went off late, and the two come up with a wild and crazy firefight that came down to the final few inches. The Rainbow Warriors held on for a 45-38 win, and now the script will be flipped.

It’ll be another offensive show, it’ll be another slop-fest full of mistakes, and it won’t be anything too pretty except for the up-and-down action. Arizona has lost three of its last four openers, but Kevin Sumlin gets a home win to kick things off.

Recruiting Team Rankings

Every Pac-12 Team’s Star Recruit

Arizona

QB Will Plummer, 6-2, 205 – He might not be all that big, but he’s a big-time passer with a live arm and the mobility to be what the Kevin Sumlin offense wants.
Key Schools In The Running: Oklahoma State, Colorado, Oregon State

Arizona State

WR Johnny Wilson, 6-6, 230 – An interesting target with the size to grow into a tight end, and the athleticism to be a matchup nightmare as a wideout. Oregon had him, and the Sun Devils flipped him.
Key Schools In The Running: Oregon, USC, Tennessee

Cal

RB Chris Street, 5-9, 195 – Very, very shifty and fast through the hole, he’s a home-run hitter who can be used as a receiver and have plays designed to get the ball in his hands in a variety of ways.
Key Schools In The Running: Arizona State, Utah, USC

Colorado

RB Ashaad Clayton, 6-0, 200 – Really, really fast with the size to bring a little bit of power, he’s more of a home-run hitter than a workhorse. The New Orleans native isn’t just a track guy playing football, though.
Key Schools In The Running: Florida, LSU, Kansas

Oregon

LB Justin Flowe, 6-3, 225 – And go ahead and add Noah Sewell as the No. 1A star of the Oregon class. Sewell is the big-hitting run-stuffer on the inside, and Flowe is the all-around playmaker on the outside with the hybrid pass-rushing ability to be terror from the start.
Key Schools In The Running: Alabama, Clemson, Georgia

Oregon State

QB Chance Nolan, 6-3, 200 – The JUCO transfer has great size, excellent mobility, and the experience to step in and start right away. However, he has only three years of eligibility.
Key Schools In The Running: Utah, UCLA, Oklahoma State

Stanford

OT Myles Hinton, 6-7, 310 – The son of former NFL star Chris Hinton is going to John Elway’s school – Chris was taken one pick after Elway in the 1983 NFL Draft. Myles is a big-body athlete with the talent and smarts to go along with the frame.
Key Schools In The Running: Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State

UCLA

QB Parker McQuarrie, 6-7, 208 – Is he it? Is he the quarterback who’s going to make the UCLA offense work under Chip Kelly? He’s not a runner, but he’s got the pro-style size and arm.
Key Schools In The Running: Wisconsin, Miami, Minnesota

USC

WR Gary Bryant, 5-11, 165 – A tall, thin target with great hands and the quickness to be used as a runner from time to time. He could be a kick and punt returner if needed, but he’ll mostly be a deep threat receiver.
Key Schools In The Running: Arizona State, Oklahoma, Oregon

Utah

CB Clark Phillips, 5-10, 187 – With a good frame, great quickness, and the ability to attack the ball with the hands to be used as a receiver if needed – he won’t drop picks. After originally choosing Ohio State, Utah plucked him away.
Key Schools In The Running: Ohio State, UCLA, Notre Dame

Washington

DE Sav’ell Smalls, 6-4, 244 – The Huskies landed the superstar. The Washington native has the NFL size to go along with the unstoppable pass rushing ability to instant step in and produce. He’s going to be the main man for the new era of UW football.
Key Schools In The Running: Florida State, Clemson, Georgia

Washington State

QB Jayden De Laura, 6-1, 190 – He signed on when Mike Leach was still the head man, and now the Hawaii native should grow into Nick Rolovich’s quarterback. He might not be all that big, but he’s deadly accurate and can run.
Key Schools In The Running: Ohio State, USC, Hawaii

Arizona (4-7) vs. Arizona State (6-5) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Arizona Will Win

The Oregon game might have been an aberration.

Arizona State was terrific in its 31-28 shocker over the Ducks. The downfield passing game was on, the defense held firm for three quarters, and it looked like the team that got off to a 3-0 start – at least defensively.

That, though, came after a four-game losing streak when the defense struggled to show up.

The Sun Devil secondary can be ripped up – Justin Herbert woke up late to make last week very, very interesting – and moving the chains on a consistent basis has been a struggle all year.

But Arizona isn’t exactly sharp.

What’s going right with this team? Blow off the losses to Oregon and Utah – they’re doing just fine. The Wildcat offense was able to roll against Oregon State and Stanford – coming up with over 1,000 yards in the two games – and getting enough passing production to be dangerous if ASU isn’t focused early on.

This is Arizona’s bowl game. This might be a rivalry showdown, but that Oregon win might have been ASU’s big moment.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Arizona State Will Win

The change in coordinators hasn’t mattered – the Arizona defense went from miserable to a whole new level of dreadful.

Again, playing Oregon and Utah will do that, but Oregon State rolled for 572 yards a few weeks ago against a Wildcat D that’s allowed close to 1,500 yards over the last three games. This isn’t the worst defense in college football, but it’s making a run for the honor.

The pass defense is the biggest issue, and that’s where Jayden Daniels comes in.

The true freshman outplayed Justin Herbert last week, throwing for 408 yards and three scores with icy-cold nerves in the biggest moments. He has only thrown two picks on the season, is averaging over nine yards per throw, and now he gets to take target practice against the secondary that can’t slow anything down.

What’s Going To Happen

The rivalry aspect will be a factor for a while as Arizona pulls out all of the stops.

And then the Arizona defense will play to form.

The Wildcat passing attack will show up and make this a blast, but the secondary won’t hold up its end of the bargain. Daniels won’t be under any pressure, he’ll connect on big play after big play, and Herm Edwards will have his second win in the rivalry over Kevin Sumlin.

Utah (9-1) vs. Arizona (4-6) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Utah Will Win

Oregon is sixth in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, Utah is seventh.

Shhhhhhhh, but Utah is playing better.

The defense has been a brick wall, stuffing everyone from Washington State to UCLA to Arizona State over a dominant six-game winning streak since losing to USC.

The Utah got past a nasty Washington team in Seattle in a 33-28 win. Other than that, the Ute D hasn’t allowed more than seven points in any game since the end of September.

Relatively healthy and playing air-tight on both sides of the ball, the Utes are owning third downs, they’re balanced with a brutally efficient attack, and they’re leading the nation in run defense.

It’s all working.

Arizona can wing the ball around a bit, but the defense doesn’t have a prayer of slowing down a red-hot Tyler Huntley, who’s among the nation’s most efficient passers averaging close to 12 yards per throw with 13 touchdowns and one lone interception.

Arizona has the nation’s second-worst pass defense and doesn’t generate a lick of a pass rush to help the cause.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Arizona Will Win

Wake up throwing, continue throwing during the pregame meal, get on the team bus throwing, get off throwing, keep throwing in the locker room, and don’t stop firing away no matter what.

There’s no prayer of running against this defensive front – Arizona State was the only team able to come up with more than 100 yards, and QB Jayden Daniels only completed 4-of-18 passes in the 21-3 loss.

However, even it’s not always effective, and even if it’s not always efficient, the Wildcats need their quarterbacks to keep pushing the Ute secondary that can be beaten.

Washington kept it close with Jacob Eason throwing 52 times for 316 yards and four scores in the 33-28 loss. USC won when Matt Fink went wacky hitting 21-of-30 passes for 351 yards and three scores. Both of those games were on the road for the Utes.

The Wildcats have been able to push for more than 350 passing yards four times this season – they have to make this a firefight in the final home game of the year. At least …

[lawrence-related id=500899]

What’s Going To Happen

The Arizona offense has to somehow keep up with what the Utah offense is about to do.

It’s been a disastrous run of five straight losses for Arizona after a 4-1 start, and it has to win this and beat Arizona State to go bowling. Utah won’t oblige.

The Ute lines will take over from the start, making up for a few big Arizona passing drives by rolling up and down the field with a balanced gameplan that won’t be slowed down.

The Utes need a win in this and a USC loss to UCLA to take the South and go off to play Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship, or they can win this and beat Colorado next week. The latter will happen.

Why Arizona Will Win

Oregon’s defense suddenly looks very, very beatable.

It’s got the talent, and it has the athleticism, but after holding five straight teams to seven points or fewer – following the great overall defensive performance in the 27-21 loss to Auburn – there’s been a big problem.

The run defense has been okay – no one’s been able to get consistently generate any sort of a push up front – but the pass defense is getting hit hard.

That’s what happens when you play the better quarterbacks.

Jacob Eason hit 77% of his passes with big play after big play in Washington’s loss to the Ducks. Washington State went Washington State for over 400 yards and over eight yards per throw, and USC  two weeks ago went for three scores as the Kedon Slovis and his dangerous receiving corps were able to throw for 264 yards – the third-most UO allowed this year.

Arizona is splitting time between freshman Grant Gunnell and veteran Khalil Tate, and they’re combining to put up big plays for a passing game that’s averaging 300 yards per game.

The Wildcats have the offense to bomb away from the start, but …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Oregon Will Win

The Oregon secondary is making up for the big yards it’s allowing with lots and lots and lots of interceptions.

Colorado was able to move the ball a bit and get in range to make things interesting in Eugene, but the Ducks came up with four picks in the 45-3 rout.

Yeah, Anthony Gordon and Washington State went off and almost pulled off the upset, but two interceptions – with one going for a score – ended up being an issue.

Last week against Slovis and those great Trojan receivers? Oregon picked off three passes with one going for a touchdown.

Interceptions haven’t been a massive issue for Arizona, but he’s had three multiple pick games. But that’s just one side of the ball. The other is having a nightmare of a time coming up with any meaningful stops.

Arizona has allowed over 400 yards of total offense in every game, and isn’t doing any one thing particularly right.

The Oregon offense can – and will – move the ball however it wants to.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been a wee bit of a grind at times over the last few weeks for Oregon, but it’s finding ways to win, and it’s about to crank up the offense.

The Wildcats have enough firepower to put up a few points, but the defense isn’t stopping anyone or anything. This isn’t normally a Duck offense that hangs big numbers on the board, but as long as it’s focused after two weeks off, it’ll score 50 getting off the bus.
