NFL Draft 2021: Alabama

Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews | @PeteFiutak

It’s really, really, really, really hard to get multiple players taken in the first round of an NFL Draft, much less three, or five, or six.

LSU had 14 players drafted last year – one at every non-kicking position including long snapper – and had five selected in the first round.

Ohio State had five players taken in the first round in 2016, and Oklahoma had four selected in the first of the 2010 draft.

The over/under on how many Alabama players would go in the first round last year was 5.5, and four – Tua Tagovailoa, Jedrick Wills, Henry Ruggs and Jerry Jeudy – were selected. It wasn’t all all that close on the over, with Xavier McKinney going with the fourth pick in the second, and the sixth Tide player – Trevon Diggs – not going until the 51st overall pick.

In other words, it’s almost impossible to get past 5.5 going in the first round no matter how good the team was the year before.

Alabama has never had more than four players taken in the first round, much less five, and this year, the oddsmaker types are setting the line at 5.5.

Even for a historically great 2020 Alabama team, good luck with that.

[lawrence-related id=434326]

Just like last year with the four that ended up being taken, Alabama has a few sure things to set a good base.

There’s no question that – in some order – QB Mac Jones, CB Patrick Surtain, WR DeVonta Smith and WR Jaylen Waddle will be selected in the first round. Now, work backwards.

OT Alex Leatherwood should be a relatively early pick, but it’ll take a bit of a shocker for him to go in the first, and the same goes for C Landon Dickerson, LB Dylan Moses and OG Deonte Brown. All of them will go after the top 32.

You still need two more to get past 5.5 Bama players selected.

Just like McKinney was the wild-card last year to get to five, Najee Harris is the one who could get Bama past four.

First, take another moment and realize the historic nature of even thinking this is possible – again, Alabama has never had five players selected in the first round.

Harris could absolutely go on Day One – he’s one of the 32 best players in this thing – but running back is so devalued now in the draft process, and Clemson’s Travis Etienne could be the first and only back off the board.

But let’s say it happens. Let’s say Harris is taken somewhere between the 23 to the Jets to the 32 with Tampa Bay. That’s still five, and you need six to go over, so …

How Many Alabama Players Will Be Drafted In the First Round?

Five.

I’ll call it that Harris makes it five Alabama players going in the first round, but even that’s a bit of a reach. So let’s say I’m right, then it comes down to …

DT Christian Barmore.

I think he’s easily the best defensive tackle in a weak draft for the position, and there’s certainly a chance that someone thinks there’s value in drafting him a wee bit early to take the best one off the board, but if it happens, it’ll come late.

And that’s where the sweating will come in.

Barmore is the exact right guy for Tampa Bay to take at the 32 to add more to the defensive interior, but the defending Super Bowl champion will have an abundance of great prospects to choose from.

So it comes down to this. Do you like Etienne to go before Harris? If so, assume under on the 5.5.

Do you believe in historical anomalies with Bama not only getting to five in the first round, but six?

The value might not be there on the under, but you’re asking for something wild to get the over. If it happens, tip your cap, and marvel in the greatness of the talent on that amazing 2020 team.

Alabama vs UCLA Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

If you’re in the Sweet 16 you’re doing something right.

UCLA had to win three games to get here – beating Michigan State, BYU, and getting a monster break with 14-seed Abilene Christian beating Texas – and it’s all working.

The Bruin defense was fantastic against the ACU shooters in the 67-47 win, the team was excellent from the start offensively, and the rebounding has been there.

Alabama shoots a whole lot of threes, but UCLA has been okay against the Pac-12 teams that bomb way, it’s a better shooting team from the outside, and it’s going to roll on the free throw line.

The Tide limited the fouls in the 96-77 win over Maryland, but it’s usually putting teams on the line at least ten times, and UCLA should pounce. The Bruins are a whole lot stronger from the line than they showed against Abilene Christian.

2021 NCAA Tournament Schedule, Predictions

Why Alabama Will Win

Yeah, UCLA has been able to get here with three wins, but Michigan State, BYU, Abilene Christian … meh.

The Pac-12 has more than proven itself in the tournament with the Bruins playing a huge part of that, but let’s not start preparing to throw another national title on the school’s pile just yet.

Alabama didn’t have any issues against Iona – at least after the first half – and Maryland, it’s on a run of 11 wins in 12 games including the SEC Championship, and it’s playing like a team that’s comfortable in its style.

Attack with the D, shoot threes, rebound the misses – the Tide have ten or more offensive rebounds in the last ten games and in 12 of the last 13 – repeat.

UCLA’s defense has been tough in the tournament, but it’s just okay overall from three and it doesn’t force a whole lot of mistakes.

What’s Going To Happen

Alabama is too solid in too many phases.

The defense is strong enough inside and out to keep UCLA from grinding for points like it’s been doing through the tournament, the offense is too explosive on the outside and stronger at moving the ball around, and the threes will be there in the second half to push on.

Alabama vs Maryland Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Maryland Will Win

The Terps didn’t have any real drama or issues with UConn, disposing of one of the Big East’s stars in the first half and rolling from there for a 63-54 win.

The threes were falling, the defense was terrific, and making five more free throws than the Huskies helped.

This might be a brutally flaky Terp team, but after losing three of its last four games coming into this, it became the good-flaky in the first round. Maryland has that ability to get hot, maintain the momentum, and keep it going at both ends of the floor with excellent defensive intensity.

For all of the strong things Alabama is able to do, it’s not amazing from three – it shoots threes in bulk, but it doesn’t really make them – and there are problems when the outside shots aren’t dropping.

The Tide foul way too much, they’re not a particularly good-shooting team, and as they showed against Iona in the 68-55 win, turnovers are always going to be an issue.

Maryland has to force mistakes and capitalize on them on the move, but …

2021 NCAA Tournament Schedule, Predictions

Why Alabama Will Win

If the Alabama threes start falling early, the Terps will panic and there will be a problem.

Yeah, the Tide don’t make a lot of threes, but they take more than anyone in America. Maryland is okay at guarding from the outside, but it’s not amazing at it. This isn’t a particularly powerful offensive team, either.

Maryland is 12-2 this year when teams fail to hit 31% of their threes, and 5-11 when they do. When teams make nine or more, the Terps are a painful 2-10.

Bama might not be automatic from three, but it hit 31% or better in 21 games, is 18-2 when making nine or more threes, and 12-0 when making 12 or more.

What’s Going To Happen

As always, Bama will keep on firing.

Get down the court, shoot a three, repeat. Either you can keep up the pace, or you can’t. The Maryland defense will clamp down enough to not get gouged from the outside, and it’ll make the Tide have to do more than bomb away.

UConn was great from the outside against the Terps and it didn’t matter.

The bigger issue for Maryland will be when Bama misses – the Terps can’t rebound. Alabama leads the nation in total rebounds, Maryland will get blasted on the boards by at least ten, and that’s going to be the difference.

It’ll be a tighter game than Alabama might like, but the ability on the glass and to force defensive mistakes will play a bigger role than what it does from three.

Alabama vs Iona Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Iona Will Win

Rick Pitino’s team is playing like a team that’s as well-coached as they come.

It doesn’t shoot from three, it doesn’t take the ball away, and it turns the ball over a ton, but it rebounds everything, hits its free throws, and it guards like mad on three point shooters.

The Gaels are going to want to slow this thing down to a dead stop. There’s not a lot of high-powered scoring pop – at least against a team like Alabama – but there’s just enough size to get tough on the inside.

Alabama fouls a ton and it turns it over a lot. The Gaels have to take advantage of every defensive stop and have to have to do enough on the offensive boards to force fouls and get to the line.

2021 NCAA Tournament Schedule, Predictions

Why Alabama Will Win

Alabama is one good scoring run away from ending this.

Yeah, Iona was able to come up with a few big offensive performances, but it doesn’t have the outside shooting pop to keep up if Bama goes Bama and starts hitting from the outside.

No one in America shoots more threes, and the Tide have the D to go along with the three. Throw in its rebounding ability – it leads the nation in total rebounds and isn’t going to allow enough Iona offensive boards to matter.

College Basketball Experts Picks For Alabama vs Iona

What’s Going To Happen

This is a bad, bad fit for Iona.

Granted, it’s a 15 seed so anyone in this thing would pose problems for the Gaels, but Alabama is going to start taking threes from the start and will keep taking them. Iona doesn’t have the ability to bomb its way back into the game once the Tide get going.

It’ll take a few minutes – it’ll be tight for the first 10 minutes – and then the avalanche will come.

Alabama (23-6) vs LSU (18-8) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Alabama Will Win

Tennessee might have had a good lead and played a great first half in the semifinal, and then Bama started to step up the tempo, forced a slew of mistakes, and it won the second half by 14 in the 73-68 win.

There wasn’t a whole lot of drama before that in the five game winning streak, but now the team is showing just how strong it can be when it has to turn it up a notch when it really matters.

No one in America shoots more threes, the defensive pressure is still great at forcing mistakes, and coming up with shutdown stretches is the norm.

The Tide only faced LSU once with a 105-75 win in mid-January when the offense nailed everything. LSU has the high-powered offense, but Bama has the extra gear when it comes to cranking up the volume threes.

Why LSU Will Win

The Tiger offense has been terrific.

The defense might be flaky with just enough meltdowns – usually when the rebounds aren’t there at either end – to expect a clunker to be just around the bend, but everything held together over the last four games and in the SEC Tournament to get here.

Arkansas had the tempo and offense to run the Tigers out of the gym, but instead LSU was on from three and came up with a strong outing on the free throw line to win 78-71.

The O can hang with Bama in what should be a back-and-forth fight, and the D is among the best in the nation at guarding the three, and …

What’s Going To Happen

The Tide followed up that 105-point day earlier in the season with a 78-60 win in early February when the Tigers couldn’t seem to hit a thing.

This will be an offensive show no matter what, but Bama’s 3-and-D style will work just enough in the second half to pull away after a strong LSU first half.

Alabama (22-6) vs Tennessee (18-7) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Tennessee Will Win

Tennessee got tough.

It beat Florida 78-66 by getting nasty on the boards and doing a great job of getting to the basket with lots and lots of good ball movement. The Vols had 21 assists and the Gators had just seven – that has to continue against the Bama D.

The Crimson Tide are great at forcing steals and mistakes, but if Tennessee can keep the turnovers to under 15, the other parts should work. In the first and only meeting – a 71-63 Tide win in early January – Tennessee only turned it over nine times, so it’s possible. If it can just shoot a little better than 32% – that was an anomaly – it can hang around.

Why Alabama Will Win

That’s what’s called a statement performance.

Alabama ripped off a 47-19 first half run against Mississippi State on the way to a 85-48 victory, forcing a ton of Bulldog mistakes, hitting 49% from the field, and keeping the pressure on with great ball movement all game long.

Tennessee might have the ability and upside to keep up if this gets into a high-scoring fight, but its way too flaky – it’s just as likely to hit just 35% from the field as it is to make half of its shots.

To harp on this, it’s going to come down to mistakes. Bama has come up with double-digit steals in each of its last four games, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Tennessee leads the SEC in fewest turnovers.

Bama took its game to a whole other level against Mississippi State, but it’s generally not that strong a shooting team and it’s more prone to turnovers than the Vols are.

Can Tennessee ramp up the intensity like it did against the Gators? It’s got the ability to match Bama on the boards and play just enough defense to pull it off. It’ll shoot better than it did back in January.

Alabama (21-6) vs Mississippi State (15-13) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Mississippi State overcame a hard second half charge by Kentucky to win 74-73 to get here. The Bulldogs couldn’t hit from three well enough, but they made 49% of their shots from the field and helped stay in it on the free throw line when things were breaking down.

They lost twice to the Tide with absolutely nothing happening from three in either game. The defense worked fine and they were able to stay in both games, and now if they can just get anything from the outside, they’ve got the ability to make this a battle.

Why Alabama Will Win

Yeah, Mississippi State can’t hit the three lately.

It’s not a bad shooting team from the outside overall, but it doesn’t take a ton of outside shots and it’s only been able to get to 40% once in the last eight games.

On the flip side, Alabama can bomb its way out of a jam or into control. They’ve taken the second-most threes of anyone in the country and made the fourth most.

Combine that with their ability to force turnovers – and Mississippi State’s problems with too many mistakes and giveaways – and that should be just enough to move on.

What’s Going To Happen

Mississippi State will be plucky.

It’s good on the inside and great on the boards, forcing Bama to hit from the outside – and that plays into the strength. The Tide won’t be perfect, but they’ll go on the scoring runs that the Bulldogs won’t.

Like the first two meetings, this will be a battle with Bama having just a wee bit more in the bag.

Alabama (20-6) vs Georgia (14-10) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Alabama Will Win

There was an off day in a blowout against Arkansas last week, but everything is back to normal with great defensive performances in wins over Mississippi State and Auburn as part of a run of five wins in the last six games.

One of those wins was over Georgia in mid-February, with the offense hitting 64% from the field and 60% from three in the 115-82 obliteration. That’s not all that crazy for a Bulldog game – Georgia gives up 78 points per game partly because the offense gives up a ton of turnovers for easy scores.

The Crimson Tide will get points on the move, they’ll shoot a ton of threes, and on this defense, they’ll make most of them.

Why Georgia Will Win

Alabama might be taking it easy. It already won the SEC Championship and doesn’t necessarily need this for anything more than a tune-up for the games that matter.

For all of Georgia’s problems and issues, the team has no problems trying to crank up the scoring. It can rebound, move the ball around, and it’ll get into the speed of the game with the ability to play in the 80s without a problem.

It’s Senior Day – the Dawgs will be cranked for this.

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia has been just good enough at home to make this more of a fight than Bama might like. No, the Tide won’t take the day off, but the Bulldogs will ramp up the intensity just enough to keep this from being a blowout.

Alabama (19-6) vs Auburn (12-13) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Alabama Will Win

It’s been a bit of a struggle lately, but Bama has managed to keep on winning with wins in four of the last five games. It’s winning by keeping up on the boards and making up for the misses with a whole lot of offensive rebounds to clean things up.

Auburn turns the ball over way too much, it’s not great from three, and gives up too many points allowing 77 per game. It was able to come up with a slight shocker against Tennessee and the offense hasn’t been bad, but it’s had a hard time keeping up in the clutch.

However …

Why Auburn Will Win

Alabama has had a hard time shooting.

Auburn can’t seem to win when the other side is connecting from the field, but when teams are struggling – like Tennessee hitting just 41% and Missouri 38% – they lose.

It doesn’t have to be a total clunker of an offensive performance from the other side – and Auburn has to find a way to keep Bama from getting on the move – but the Tide failed to make 40% of their shots in six of the last nine games.

After a great midseason, Bama is the definition of a team leaking oil.

It got Auburn the first time 94-90 back in early January, but this is a different team now.

What’s Going To Happen

Alabama won’t get red hot, but it’ll be good enough.

Auburn’s defense isn’t going to be able to do enough when the Tide make a few key shots from the outside midway through the second half to finally make a little bit of a run.

It’s going to be like the last few games for the Tide. It’s not going to be easy, but it’ll be a win.

Alabama (18-6) vs Mississippi State (13-11) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Alabama Will Win

The Crimson Tide might have flopped against Arkansas the other night, but before that it was on a three-game winning run and the offense has been strong enough to bomb its way out of just about everything.

It has a problem with turnovers, it fouls a lot, and the team isn’t good enough from the field, but it leads the nation in made three-pointers. It might have had its problems over the last few weeks with its consistency, but again, it makes up for it from three in game after game.

Mississippi State isn’t bad at stopping teams from three, but lost to LSU and Vanderbilt when giving up double-digit made threes in each game.

Alabama hit 14 of them in the 81-73 win in late January.

Why Mississippi State Will Win

This is a quirky Bulldog team with just enough good parts to pull this off.

Start with its ability to hit the boards and continue with the ability to hit from three.

Miss State came up with a whopping 46 rebounds in the win over South Carolina a few days ago including ten on the offensive glass. The shots have been dropping lately – hitting close to 50% from the field over the last four games – but the potential is there to do just enough to make up for the misses.

Yeah, Alabama is great on the boards, but the Bulldogs were dead even in rebounding margin in the first game.

What’s Going To Happen

Can Bama get its groove back on the road?

The last four road games have been rough with three loss and a close call against a South Carolina team that Mississippi State pantsed twice over the last few weeks.

Bama will make up for the Arkansas loss by shooting well enough from three to survive, but it’s going to get pushed really, really hard.
