What Marcus Freeman said at introductory press conference

Will Notre Dame win a national championship under the direction of Marcus Freeman?

Marcus Freeman was introduced as Notre Dame’s 30th head football coach on Monday in an event that felt more like a celebration than an announcement.  The marching band play, cheerleaders danced, an impressive stage was set out and legendary Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn played the role of master of ceremonies as Marcus Freeman was introduced.

The head coach offered an opening statement after being introduced and shared the following during his Q-and-A with the media in attendance.  Here is everything new Notre Dame head football coach had to say:

Editor’s Note: a huge thank you goes out to the Notre Dame football public relations team for transcribing the entire press conference and quickly getting it turned around for our use!

No decision made yet on Kyle Hamilton for Fiesta Bowl

Will he or won’t he play?

It’s essentially a forgone conclusion that Notre Dame star safety Kyle Hamilton won’t be a part of the 2022 Fighting Irish football team as most assume he’ll be among the first 10 players taken in the 2022 NFL draft.  Has Hamilton played his final game at Notre Dame or will he play in the Fiesta Bowl to close the 2021 season on New Year’s Day?

New Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman was asked exactly that by Eric Hansen of the South Bend Tribune during Monday’s introductory press conference and said that decision hasn’t yet been made.

“I’ve communicated clearly with Kyle that his health is the number-one importance for any decision we make,” Freeman said, “Whatever is best for him and best for his health I’m going to support.” – Marcus Freeman

I’ve thought all along that Hamilton played his last down in blue and gold when he had the scary knee injury against USC and I support and understand why he’d make that decision.

In nothing else besides selfish reasons however, I’d be lying if I said I really didn’t want to see him play one more game for Notre Dame.

Stay tuned as we’ll certainly find out more about Hamilton’s availability as the Fiesta Bowl date on New Year’s Day with Oklahoma State draws nearer.

Marcus Freeman: ‘I better be the lead recruiter’

This should be music to Notre Dame fan’s ears…

Marcus Freeman met the media as he was officially introduced as Notre Dame’s head football coach on Monday.  One of Freeman’s greatest strengths is in his ability to communicate and connect with players and the recruiting benefits that come along with having those skills.

So not that he is the head coach and he’ll have to be dragged in countless directions and tend to things he never had to tend to as an assistant, will his emphasis on being such an important recruiter remain as high?

Try higher.

That’s music to the ears of Notre Dame fans as the Irish continue to try and close the talent gap between themselves and the truly elites of college football.

We’ll have a ton of content in regards to what Freeman had to say at his introductory press conference Monday so keep it right here at Fighting Irish Wire as he breakdown everything that was discussed by Freeman and certainly plenty that wasn’t brought up.

Notre Dame OC Tommy Rees discusses Fiesta Bowl

What is your favorite college bowl game and why (non-CFP)?

Marcus Freeman had the recruiting itch so was out and about trying to make the future of the Notre Dame football program better Sunday evening.  As a result, offensive coordinator Tommy Rees met the media instead of the head coach in advance of the Fiesta Bowl which the Irish had been announced to be playing in earlier in the day.

Below is everything Rees had to say about Notre Dame’s invitation to the Fiesta Bowl, his initial thoughts on Oklahoma State, and everything else in regards to the health of players and the crazy week that was for the Fighting Irish football team.

Do you want LSU on a future Notre Dame schedule?

Before he is officially introduced as Notre Dame’s new head football coach Monday afternoon Marcus Freeman had some business to take care of.  One of the first things on his plate for the day was an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show.  We’ll post a link to the full interview when one becomes available.

During the appearance Freeman discussed the crazy week it has been and gave some details about being offered a job by Brian Kelly to follow him to LSU, how the head coaching offer from Jack Swarbrick came to be, and if Notre Dame will have LSU soon on a future schedule.

Take a look at a little of what Freeman had to say below:

Notre Dame to play in Fiesta Bowl

Headed out west…

Notre Dame missed out on the College Football Playoff but finishing fifth in the final CFP rankings on Sunday.  The Irish won’t be playing in the Playoff but will instead be headed to the Fiesta Bowl to take on Oklahoma State.

This will be Notre Dame’s first ever clash with Oklahoma State.  It will also be Notre Dame’s sixth all-time trip to the Fiesta Bowl, the site where the clinched their most recent national championship to cap the 1988 season, but a place they haven’t won since.

Notre Dame and Oklahoma State will play on New Year’s Day at 1:00 p.m. ET.

Keep it right here for everything regarding this interesting bowl matchup for the Fighting Irish as it will be where Marcus Freeman makes his head coaching debut.

Watch: Former Notre Dame tight end scores first NFL touchdown

Awesome for Brock!

Brock Wright went undrafted this past spring but was ultimately signed by the Detroit Lions.  After bouncing between the practice squad and active roster earlier this year, Wright was ultimately signed to the Lions active roster full-time.

Now Wright has his first career NFL touchdown as Lions quarterback Jared Goff connected with the Lions rookie to extend the lead against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.  Check out the play below:

The Lions are in hunt for their first of 2021 as they lead the Vikings 14-6 at the time of this posting.

Wright’s touchdown on Sunday matches his career total at Notre Dame as his only score for the Irish came in their 2018 drubbing of Wake Forest.

The Notre Dame impact of Oklahoma coaching search

Is there a more respected assistant coach in all of college football?

Since Notre Dame football started it’s friends-with-benefits deal with the ACC in 2014 the most successful conference program in that time has been Clemson and it hasn’t been particularly close.  Clemson has won a pair of national championships in that time, appeared in a couple more, and been a regular in the College Football Playoff.

Now it appears Clemson’s coaching staff is taking a significant hit as reports have defensive coordinator Brent Venables close to accepting a deal that would make him Oklahoma’s next head coach.

Dabo Swinney has obviously done a fantastic job with Clemson, taking a program that was a longtime college football punchline to the highest of levels.  He’s however done it with Venables as his right hand man the entire time as Venables joined Clemson’s staff in 2012 and has been among the highest paid assistant coaches in all of college football during that time.

Obviously Clemson’s quarterbacks and star offensive players get a lot of press over the last few years but their defenses have remain stacked the entire time.  Venables was a longtime member of Bob Stoops’s Oklahoma staff before joining at Clemson.

I don’t doubt Swinney will have success but in terms of the stability Clemson has had the last decade the loss of Venables is seemingly as big of loss as any team could have nationally in terms of an assistant coach.  This will be a fascinating and impactful for Swinney and Clemson going forward.

And just a heads up, Clemson makes a trip to Notre Dame Stadium on November 5, 2022.

Former Notre Dame coach joins Georgia Tech staff

Old friend (to a fringe rival) alert!

In a week we’ve seen plenty of coaching moves a man that was on Notre Dame’s coaching staff not long ago is joining the staff at a regular Fighting Irish opponent.

Chip Long, who coordinated Notre Dame’s offense from 2017-2019 and most recently was the offensive coordinator at Tulane, is joining the Georgia Tech coaching staff according to Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports.

If you need further confirmation, Long has already updated his Twitter bio to read “Offensive Coordinator of Georgia Tech Football” and has updated his background picture to that of Bobby Dodd Stadium on Georgia Tech’s campus.

Long was not retained by Kelly and Notre Dame following the 2019 regular season when his position eventually was filled by former Fighting Irish quarterback Tommy Rees who will remain as a part of Marcus Freeman’s first staff.
