Texas quarterback Hudson Card has a great chance to become Sam Ehinger’s successor in 2021.
The incoming freshman was a four-star recruit and the No. 2 overall dual-threat quarterback in the 2020 recruiting class. Similar to Ehlinger’s path, Card is also a local Austin product from Lake Travis High School.
He’s known as an accurate passer within the pocket and has the athleticism to escape the rush and create big plays downfield. With Ehlinger entering his senior season and Casey Thompson occupying the backup quarterback role, Card is expected to redshirt this season.
It will allow him to put on necessary weight to develop from a physical standpoint before he competes for the starting job in 2021. He will be competing alongside Ja’Quinden Jackson to become Ehlinger’s successor.
It appears the coaching staff and teammates are preparing for the job to be Card’s to lose. He was an early enrollee this year, although COVID-19 disrupted the majority of spring ball.
However, he’s staying busy getting his work in with in-state quarterback coach Brad Stanfield.

While the first video was posted in April, Stanfield released a new video on Monday of Card escaping the pocket and throwing the ball downfield. His physical stature is steadily improving and his arm strength was on full display.
Although it won’t be easy to follow in Ehlinger’s footsteps, Texas is in great shape at the position for the foreseeable future.
