2020-21 Charlotte Hornets Player Review: Caleb Martin

In an expanded role this season, Caleb Martin produced mixed results, leading to questions about his future role on the Hornets.

A product of the Hornets’ player development system, Caleb Martin became a part of the rotation in Charlotte, partly through injury and partly a testament to his work. He played twice as many minutes this season, but saw his efficiency drop drastically.

While he has worked his way into being a piece of the Hornets rotation at times this season, Charlotte’s ambitions as a playoff team may surpass his ability level.

Stat of the Season

818

After playing 317 minutes in his rookie season, Caleb Martin played in 818 minutes his sophomore campaign. He played in almost exactly three times as many games, started three times and scored twice as many points.

Notable quote from exit interview

On difference between rookie and sophomore year …

“I just think with me coming in, I think I just established myself as being able to give a little bit more of the offensive feel when I’m out there. But this year, what we needed for me was energy and to be active.”

Overview

Martin’s role on the 2020-21 version of the Hornets expanded drastically from his rookie year and did not lead to great results. With a small sample size his rookie year, Martin was a very efficient shooter. In a far larger sample size this season, he shot 37.5% from the field, 24.8% from the 3-point line and 64.1% from the free-throw line.

What Martin continued to bring this season was energy. Throughout the season, he was a consistent spark off the bench, whether through his ambitious dunk attempts or hustle plays.

He helped the Hornets to a late-season win against Detroit because of his energy and a big offensive half. However, those offensive contributions were too few and far between.

Outlook

On a non-guaranteed contract next season, Martin’s spot on the team isn’t a given. Martin will be 26 years old entering next season, and, by NBA standards, that’s on the old side when it comes to prospects. At this point, he’s largely who he is as a player. While he may have value in some situations, if Charlotte is to make the leap to a playoff team next season, Martin will either need to make a similarly large leap or be left behind.

Still, as a spark off the bench, there are worse options. On an ideal playoff team that the Hornets want to build, though, he would be much further down the bench than he was this season.

Can the Texans’ linebackers save their Tampa-2 defense?

The Houston Texans are running the Tampa 2 defense. Can the Texans’ linebackers play adeptly enough to save the defense?

The Houston Texans have signed a bevy of linebackers in the offseason. Many have gone as far as to say the additions have been comedic in their volume, with Christian Kirksey, Joe Thomas, Neville Hewitt, Kamu Grugier-Hill, Kevin Pierre-Louis and Tae Davis joining the team in free agency. Not to mention sixth-round draft choice Garret Wallow another likely roster lock.

Coach David Culley since his arrival has preached excessively on the notion of “competition” and how the team must push each other to be competitive. No other position looks to embody this as much as how the linebacker room projects.

These additions all come in the midst of a transition to new defensive coordinator Lovie Smith’s 4-3, Tampa 2 defense. Since 2011, the Texans have been running the 3-4 defense, whether it was Wade Phillips as the defensive coordinator or Romeo Crennel starting in 2014.

With more defensive lineman on the field, the Texans’ linebacking corps will be tasked with more responsibilities than ever in the 2021 season. Kirskey, signed in free agency in March, spoke about the position’s responsibility in Smith’s scheme.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Kirksey told Houston reporters on a Zoom call on May 27. “Coming from Lovie’s experience and his history of football and just his knowledge of football, it’s definitely something that’s good for me to learn from a guy like him. His defense is very linebacker friendly. It gives you a chance to run around, have fun, make plays. He puts a lot on his linebackers and he wants a lot of athletic linebackers. I feel like me personally, being in his system, it’s a lot of fun because it allows you to play ball. I think that every linebacker can speak for himself as far as going out there and making plays and being in this defense.”

Houston will most certainly need this group to “play ball” in 2021. The defensive line is in a state of uncertainty with the departure of J.J. Watt and many are wondering who will provide pressure between Shaq Lawson, Jonathan Greenard, Whitney Mercilus, Jacob Martin and a group that strangely resembles the “Island of Misfit Toys.” Meanwhile, the defensive back group carries question about their ability to excel in zone coverage schemes Smith is notorious for.

As such, it will be up to the linebackers to not only help contribute towards rushing the quarterback but also potentially cover for longer periods of time.  Zach Cunningham returns as the starting inside linebacker after an astonishing 164 tackle campaign in 2020. Outside of that, to borrow Culley’s words, it’ll be a lot of competition.

Kirksey and Thomas are the most tenured of the new additions. Hewitt is coming off the best individual season, having made 134 tackles as a bright spot on a lowly New York Jets’ defense. Grugier-Hill and Pierre-Louis may be the best of the bunch at pass coverage.

For Houston to succeed in 2021, a few individuals will have to emerge from the competition as important contributors to Smith’s defense. Their diversity of experience and talent may be the difference maker of whether this defensive unit rebounds from an atrocious 2020 or remains a basement-dweller defense.

Cowboys DB room intriguing mix of potential, upside Quinn will try to evolve

Breaking down the Cowboys defensive backs room and analyzing who could make the 53-man roster.

Dan Quinn was brought in to replace the one-year fiasco of Mike Nolan in order to fix one of the worse defenses in Dallas Cowboys team history. As difficult a task as it will be for the whole group and each of the position coaches to ensure their troops improve, the onus is likely to be the defensive passing game coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. and defensive back coach Al Harris.

They might have the toughest job on the staff, getting their respective unit ready for this season as the Cowboys’ DB room is very inexperienced. The team has a lot of teaching to do to get the unit where it needs to be, but their first job is to decide which players will make the 53-man roster. Here’s a breakdown of the various candidates as OTAs roll on.

Tampa Bay Lightning at Carolina Hurricanes Game 2 odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s Tampa Bay Lightning at Carolina Hurricanes Game 2 odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Tampa Bay Lightning and Carolina Hurricanes play Game 2 of their Stanley Cup Playoffs second-round series Tuesday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at PNC Arena. Below, we analyze the Lightning-Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Lightning struck for a 2-1 victory in the series opener Sunday afternoon. Andrei Vasilevskiy was the difference turning aside 37 of the 38 shots he faced, as he was just a little more crisp than rookie Alex Nedeljkovic in the crease for Carolina.

The Hurricanes were tied 1-1 early in the third period when Jake Bean struck on the power play for his first-career playoff goal. That’s the good news. The bad news is that Bean cannot be the team’s only scorer as the other weapons need to produce if the Hurricanes are to win.

  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Lightning at Hurricanes: Projected starting goalies

Andrei Vasilevskiy (31-10-1, 2.21 GAA, .925 SV%, 5 SO) vs. Alex Nedeljkovic (15-5-3, 1.90 GAA, .932 SV%, 3 SO)

Vasilevskiy allowed just the Bean power-play goal as he really stood on his head and was tremendous in the series opener. He is 2-0 in playoff series openers this season, and he won Game 2 in Florida last round, too.

Nedeljkovic and the Hurricanes lost for the first time in four playoff home games, although they were certainly not outplayed. Unfortunately for the rookie, he is now 2-3 in one-goal games in the playoffs so far.

Lightning at Hurricanes: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Lightning 3, Hurricanes 2

Money line (ML)

The LIGHTNING (-110) have plenty of offense, but the goaltending situation and the experience are the biggest differences in this series. The Hurricanes (-110) are an uber-talented team that did big things in the regular season. This organization continues to trend up and will be a championship contender for years to come, but their time is not now.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The Lightning +1.5 (-275) will cost you almost three times your potential return, and that’s just not a recommended play.

AVOID and focus on the money line instead.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 5.5 (-110) is the play in Game 2. Vasilevskiy shut down the Hurricanes offense, and Ned did a good job keeping the big dogs for the Lightning at bay. Don’t be surprised if this one is a 2-2 game heading to overtime. If that occurs, enjoy the great hockey, whomever wins, and enjoy the winning ticket, too.

Boston Celtics at Brooklyn Nets Game 5 odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s Brooklyn Nets at Boston Celtics Game 5 NBA odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The 7-seed Boston Celtics and 2-seed Brooklyn Nets play Game 5 of their Eastern Conference first-round series Tuesday at Barclays Center in Brooklyn; the Nets hold a 3-1 series lead. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Celtics vs. Nets odds and lines, with NBA picks and predictions.

The Celtics head to Brooklyn with their backs up against the wall down 3-1 in the series. After a 50-point effort from Jayson Tatum in Game 3, the C’s were back to their losing ways falling by double digits for the third time in four outings.

The Nets have not only won three of the first four games in this series to push the Celtics to the brink of elimination, but they have covered three times by 8.5 or more points in this series. In its three wins, Brooklyn has an average winning margin of 16.0 PPG.

Celtics at Nets: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Nets 131, Celtics 113

Money line (ML)

Nets (-800) will cost you eight times your potential return. Any self-respecting bettor won’t ever even consider a wager so nonsensical.

AVOID.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The NETS -12.5 (-110) is much better play, as the home side looks to close out the Celtics +12.5 (-110). Kemba Walker is doubtful to play in this one, and that makes it all the more difficult for the road side. After a surprising Game 3 win, Boston was helpless against the powerful Brooklyn offense. Game 5 will be no different as the C’s are sent packing.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 231.5 (-110) is the way to go. After an Under result in Game 1, we’ve had three straight Over results. Brooklyn has scored 130 or more points in two of those outings, and Boston has 125 or more in each of the previous two games. Defensive hasn’t exactly been sharp in this series.

Momma bear in Yellowstone has ‘paws full’ with misbehaving cub

Video shows a momma bear in Yellowstone National Park at wits end with her misbehaving cub as it plays a game of “Catch me if you can.”

A momma bear in Yellowstone National Park appears to be at wits end with her misbehaving cub as it plays a game of “Catch me if you can.”

Momma bear is definitely fed up with the cub’s antics, as she gets a little rough, including whipping the young one around at the 5:00 mark in the video produced by Ron Sterbenz of Yellowstone Video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJuSNr8Jh64

“I had never seen that rough behavior before on a cub,” Sterbenz told USA Today/For The Win Outdoors. “Mom’s patience was clearly wearing thin that morning. I have heard that black bears don’t always make great mothers, but I am not really sure what folks mean by that. As rough as she was on it, I wasn’t surprised that she only had one left.”

Sterbenz shot the footage in May in the northern tier of Yellowstone on the southeast hillside of Elk Creek. He condensed about 25 minutes of video down to the 6½ minutes he posted.

“When I later assembled the video sequences there were times that cub played and climbed a tree after this rough handling so it didn’t seem like it was running away,” Sterbenz told For The Win Outdoors. “In fact, the cub later followed mom over a couple logs and I think bedded down to nurse. I waited another half hour, but neither reappeared.

“Like children of every species, they will test the patience of their parents every once in awhile.”

Also on FTW Outdoors: Yellowstone tourist is no ‘bison whisperer,’ just reckless

There was plenty of sympathy for the momma bear from viewers of Yellowstone Video. Among the comments:

“This mother has her paws full. The cub is too funny, but Mama isn’t laughing.”

“Poor mama bear, she must be thinking ‘Lord give me patience.’”

“That mother is going to have to spank him. This just made my day!!”

“Poor mom. Kids never listen to moms even with animals, but that’s what moms do, love and care.”

“Good thing she only has the one. That cub has a very independent streak.”

“Well, we all know what this is…some days Mom has just had enough.”

“This little one is a hand full lol….he pushed every button she had….then climbed a tree…..little stinker.”

“That’s one defiant and very independent cub! Such a little rascal! It knew it had the advantage as it didn’t weigh enough to break through the snow, yet momma bear did! Delightful video.”

Doc Rivers defends Ben Simmons’ lack of scoring for Sixers after loss

Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers defends Ben Simmons’ lack of scoring after their Game 4 loss.

The Philadelphia 76ers were in trouble on Monday as they looked to close out the Washington Wizards. Not only were they on the road and the Wizards were playing desperate basketball, but they also lost superstar big man Joel Embiid to injury in the first half.

In that situation, the burden to step up and make big plays on offense fell to the other half of the star duo, but Ben Simmons could not oblige. He had 13 points, and he only took five shots while going 5-for-11 from the line in the Game 4 loss.

It was a performance that left much to be desired considering how talented he is and how much size he has. When Embiid goes down, it has to be on Simmons as the other All-Star on the team to lead the way.

“You guys keep this Ben Simmons narrative alive, which to me is freaking insane,” said coach Doc Rivers. “How good this guy is and all the things he does. Ben is not a 40-point guy. It’s not what he does. He does other things for your team, and I just don’t understand why that’s not thinking in, in our city.”

Sure, Simmons does a lot of things out on the floor and he is one of the unique stars in this league. He has such a huge impact on the game despite not being a huge scorer. However, in this situation without the big fella, he had an opportunity to step up and close out a playoff series and he was unable to do so.

“I just got to stay aggressive,” said Simmons. “Even when I go to the line, I’m not really worried about them fouling me. I just got to knock them down.”

Now, Simmons is one of the elite players in this league from a standpoint of being able to lock down the opposition’s best scorer as well as creating offense for his teammates. However, he also has to be able to score in a situation like Monday without Embiid.

“Everybody on the team doesn’t have to be a scorer to help the team,” Rivers added. “Ben scores, but Ben creates scoring for us. That’s what he does. If I’m Ben, at some point I get tired of it. I just would, because he’s just too good and he does so many good things for this basketball team. I keep saying celebrate him! Celebrate all the stuff he does well. We don’t do that enough.”

To Rivers’ point, Simmons does get criticized a ton for not scoring a lot of points, but it is a valid criticism. At some point, he has to be able to take over a game with his scoring as he did against the Utah Jazz on Feb. 15 when he scored 42 points. He has it in him.

“Ben Simmons does a lot of good things for this team,” Rivers finished. “He was in foul trouble tonight (Monday); we keep hammering the kid.”

As the Sixers move on to Game 5 and look to close the Wizards out at home, it will be on the star point guard to lead the way if the big fella can’t give it a go.

“I was a little passive at certain times, but at the same time, I was trying to get great looks for my teammates,” Simmons finished. “Furkan (Korkmaz) came in and knocked down a quick one to get us back in the game, and he had another one at the top of the key. We got some good looks.”

Olympic hopeful Nate Ebner ‘thankful’ for the support of Joe Judge

Nate Ebner, who has his sights set on the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, is “thankful” for the support of New York Giants head coach Joe Judge.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbx61yex5whq8aq player_id=none image=https://giantswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Earlier this year, NFL veteran Nate Ebner returned to the United States men’s national rugby team with his sights set on the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Ebner had previously been part of the opening ceremonies at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, but this time around, his goals are a bit loftier. However, his quest would not have happened if not for the support of New York Giants head coach Joe Judge.

[lawrence-related id=669082,665682,654495]

“Joe Judge was there the whole time, he saw me do what I did in ’16 and thankfully I have him around this time and he knew what it did for me as a football player, he knew what it meant to me. When you have that support, it just allows you to confidently go towards what you want to do, and I don’t have to second guess their support or where I stand with them when it is done,” Ebner told Talking Rugby Union.

“Ultimately, I think they like me for who I am and the character that I have and the effort I put towards my job every day and the consistency I bring. Bill [Belichick] respects that, Joe respects that. I think it is the character, it is the work ethic, it is the consistency of who I am.”

And Judge has never waivered in that support of Ebner — not in 2016 when he was an assistant with the New England Patriots and not here in 2021 as head coach of the Giants.

“We are proud to support Nate in his effort to earn a place on the United States National Rugby team,” Judge said in March. “This is the second time I have been with Nate while he tries to make the team to represent our country in the Olympics. We know that rugby has been an important part of Nate’s life since he was a young man, and Dave (Gettleman) and I both encouraged him to pursue this opportunity. Nate’s rugby training will keep him in great shape this offseason, and we will stay in touch with him as he goes through the process.”

When Ebner’s quest for Olympic gold concludes, the Giants and Judge will be there to welcome him back with open arms.

“Technically Nate is a free agent right now but we fully intend for him to be a member of the Giants and he has to go through Olympic rugby training and we’re supporting him with that,” Judge said in May. “But that’s an experience I’ve been through with him before. Actually he returned from the Olympics in 2016 and had a tremendous year for us. So I’ve gone through this before with him. I understand exactly how his training applies, rugby and can lead into football, and look, honestly it was one of his most productive years ever.

“He’s a guy that’s very locked in and focused. He was a captain last year and is a great team leader. This team, what he’s helping build is very important for him and while I don’t speak for anyone else, I don’t mind going echoing that for Nate because I know I can speak very directly and honestly. But look, he’s a very important part of this team and we look forward to getting him back.”

Cleveland RTX Full-Face wedges

Cleveland’s newest wedges have a high-toe design and the entire hitting area is covered in grooves to help golfers generate more spin.

With the release of its newest series of wedges, the RTX Full-Face, Cleveland Golf – a company synonymous with high-quality wedges – is bringing several technologies and hot trends together in one club.

For the past few seasons, wedges designed with a high-toe area, like the RTX Full-Face, have grown in popularity among both professionals and amateurs. When you open the face on tricky shots around the green, they present a larger hitting area to the ball.

But as the name implies, the higher toe area is not the only thing that makes these wedges look unique. The entire hitting surface is covered in Cleveland’s UltiZip grooves from the leading edge to the topline. Like the grooves in the original ZipCore wedges released last year, these grooves are deeper with sharper edges, and designers have packed them more tightly in the hitting area. This should ensure that more groove edges grab the ball on chips and pitch shots to help generate more spin. There are also microgrooves between the main grooves to increase surface roughness and friction to help golfers create more spin.

The wedges also undergo a heat treatment that Cleveland said will help prolong the grooves’ sharpness.

From a construction standpoint, the RTX Full-Face has a low-density material inside each head that allowed Cleveland engineers to shift weight to other parts of the head and manipulate the center of gravity. Doing that helped increase the RTX Full-Face’s stability.

The RTX Full-Face is available in a Tour Satin finish in gap wedge, sand wedge and lob wedge lofts. Cleveland also includes the RTX Full-Face in its Tour Rack program for players who want to customize the grind of the wedges. The Tour Rack version features a raw steel finish, and golfers can select from the Relief Edge grind, the Heel grind, Heel and Toe grind, S-Shaped grind or Standard Sole grind. The Tour Rack wedges all have a “T” on the hosel, signifying that they were initially intended for the Tour.

Titans’ Caleb Farley ranked as top 10 first-round pick from NFL draft

At No. 22 overall, Caleb Farley was well worth the risk for the Titans.

When the Tennessee Titans drafted cornerback Caleb Farley in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft, the selection no doubt came with some risk, but it was a move Tennessee had to make.

That’s because Farley was considered a top-10 talent and the best cornerback in this draft year’s class by many, but concerns over past back issues caused him to fall right into the Titans’ lap at No. 22 overall.

In that particular spot, Farley was well worth the risk and he could turn out to be one of the biggest steals of the draft if he can stay healthy and develop into the kind of elite corner experts think is possible for him.

And Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling apparently agrees. In his rankings of every first-round pick from 2021, Easterling ranked the Titans’ selection as the ninth-best pick out of all 32 made on Day 1.

As he continues to recover from March back surgery, Farley has remained behind the scenes at Titans OTAs. It’ll be interesting to see if he gets time on the field in the coming sessions, or at mandatory minicamp from June 15-17.

What we do know is that he plans to be ready for training camp. When asked after the draft about possibly not being ready, Farley immediately shot it down.

“I rebuke that in the name of Jesus,” Farley said. “I’m expecting to be ready.”

If that turns out to be the case, the Virginia Tech product should challenge for a starting job right away, but will likely have to contend with veteran Janoris Jenkins and 2020 second-round pick Kristian Fulton for one of the two outside spots.
