2020 Season Early Awards Watchlist

It may be January, but it is never too early to begin talking about awards for the next season. Here is the early 2020 awards watchlist.

Offensive Player of the Year – Sam Ehlinger

Probably the offensive player of the year for Texas in 2019, Ehlinger will once again be the main guy on the offense. While the title of best-returning quarterback returning is up for grabs between Iowa State’s Brock Purdy and him, Ehlinger has a strong case. Throwing for 3,368 yards and 32 touchdowns, that ranked third and top of the Big 12 respectively.

What makes Ehlinger so dangerous though is his ability to use his feet. Whenever the protection breaks down or nobody is open downfield, he is able to slip out of the pocket and pick up chunks of yards running the ball. His toughness lets him run over anyone and his quickness lets him run by people.

When Ehlinger plays well, the entire Texas team plays well. The offense will go as far as he lets them, hopefully getting back to the elite level Longhorn fans are used to. If he can improve for the fourth season in a row, new offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich will have one of the best quarterbacks in the country at his disposal.
