  • This matchup is owned by the Patriots historically, as they’ve won the past eight matchups and are 10-1 in the history of the two teams meeting. Their most recent game was in 2018, when the Pats won 27-20.
  • The Patriots have won their past two games, but the offense has struggled, scoring 30 combined points over the past two games.
  • The Patriots beat the Dallas Cowboys 13-9 in their last game.
  • Houston has won three of the last four and just squeaked past the Indianapolis Colts 20-17 in their last game.

Patriots at Texans: Key injuries

Patriots CB Jason McCourty (groin) has been ruled out; the Pats have a ton of players listed as questionable, with QB Tom Brady (elbow) and WR Julian Edelman (shoulder) the most noteworthy. Both are expected to play. WRs Mohamed Sanu Sr. (ankle) and Phillip Dorsett II (concussion) remain questionable, too.

Prediction

Patriots 22, Texans 20

Moneyline (?)

As usual, the PATRIOTS (-162) are the favorite to win, but not with the same level of certainty from the oddsmakers as usual. Houston is +135. The juice is worth the squeeze here on the Patriots, as the tax isn’t very high for a regular favorite.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on the Patriots returns $6.17 profit with a victory.

Against the Spread (?)

Houston (+3.5, -129), 5-6 against the spread (1-4 at home), is being spotted 3.5 points, and that hook is as dangerous as ever. This will be a close game. The Patriots (+105) just can’t put teams away lately, as their offense is lacking playmakers and Brady hasn’t been crisp — he’s completed less than 56% of his passes in three of his last four games.

This spread is too close for me to bet on with the Pats struggling offensively. I’d AVOID. If you’re feeling the Texans, but the moneyline instead, where you have a better value.

Over/Under (?)

The Patriots are 3-8 vs. the O/U and 1-5 vs. it on the road, while Houston is just 1-4 vs. the O/U at home (4-7 overall). The under is generally a safe play for New England, but you’re going to be flirting with trouble here considering the 44.5 line in place. Roll with the UNDER (+120) again, but only do a small-unit wager here as confidence is low with a very solid line in play.

49ers keys to victory vs. red-hot Ravens

The 49ers won’t have any easy time stopping the Ravens or scoring on them, but they have a chance behind these three keys.

The Baltimore Ravens are the hottest team in the NFL. They’ve won seven in a row while outscoring opponents 172-46 in their last four contests. The 49ers may pose their toughest test yet though with a stout defense and an offense that has enough weapons to keep pace in a shootout.

San Francisco may want to avoid a track meet though. Here are three keys for a 49ers victory Sunday:

1. Hit Lamar Jackson often

There are limits to how far this goes. Hitting Jackson legally is the key, but the 49ers have to hit him whenever they can. Any time he becomes a runner they have to get him on the ground. The same goes for whenever he spends any time in the pocket. Slowing Jackson down has been near impossible this season, but history shows getting mobile quarterbacks on the ground as often as possible is key. Defensive line coach Kris Kocurek preached it last week with Aaron Rodgers, and he’ll surely do it again this week.

2. Outrun the Ravens

It’s much easier said than done, but the 49ers likely win Sunday if they rush for more yards than Baltimore. That’s typically true in any game, but it’s especially true against the NFL’s top rushing attack. San Francisco’s run game has eluded them the last four games where they’ve posted only 83.5 yards per contest. If they can get up near the 200-yard mark Sunday, it means they’re moving on offense, running up time of possession, and keeping Jackson and the Ravens off the field.

3. No free possessions

If there’s ever a game for Jimmy Garoppolo to play mistake-free, it’s Sunday. Even if the 49ers defense has a plan that slows down Baltimore’s offense, giving them extra possessions won’t be helpful. Garoppolo was terrific Sunday night against the Packers. A repeat performance will be necessary to snatch a win against the Ravens. High efficiency and no turnovers from the quarterback would be the perfect complement to a revived rushing attack.

Oscar Valdez survives spirited effort from Adam Lopez to score KO

Oscar Valdez survived a spirited effort from late replacement Adam Lopez to score a controversial seventh-round KO Saturday.

Sometimes the loser makes a bigger impression than the winner.

That might’ve been the case on Saturday at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, where Oscar Valdez was outboxed by replacement opponent Adam Lopez, went down in the second round and scored what arguably was a premature knockout in the seventh round of a scheduled 10-round junior lightweight bout he was losing on the cards.

Valdez did rally. And a victory is a victory, which keeps Valdez on course for a title shot in his new division. But those who watched the fight probably were talking more about Lopez than Valdez afterward.

Lopez was scheduled to fight another opponent at 126 pounds on the card but agreed at the last minute to replace Andres Gutierrez as Valdez’s foe after Gutierrez missed weight by 11 pounds.

Of course, it was a big assignment, taking on a hard-punching, longtime featherweight champion with only 14 pro fights under your belt. No one would’ve been shocked if the fight had ended the first time Valdez landed a punch.

Instead, Lopez looked like the better boxer, using his quickness, mobility and obvious ring acumen to frustrate Valdez for much of the fight. In other words, Lopez looked a lot like his late father, the slick Mexican Olympic silver medalist and pro contender Hector Lopez.

And the younger Lopez obviously can punch. He put Valdez down with a half hook-half uppercut about two minutes into Round 2. Valdez seemed more embarrassed than hurt but Lopez had made a statement.

After that, his confidence soaring, Lopez demonstrated that a quick, skillful boxer will give Valdez trouble, particularly when Valdez has only 30 hours to prepare to fight him.

But, to Valdez’s credit, he never became desperate. He simply continued what he had been doing since the opening bell, patiently stalking Lopez, landing punishing shots to the head or body when he could, looking for any opportunity to hurt him.

That finally came late in Round 7, when a crushing left hook disrupted his brain function and an overhand right sent him flying into the ropes for a knockdown. Lopez got up, defended himself as best he could and seemed to be on his way to surviving the round.

But a flurry from Valdez in the final seconds prompted referee Russell Mora to jump between the fighters and stop the fight. There were only 7 seconds left in the round.

Many will argue that Mora stepped in too soon because Lopez seemed to have his wits about him, wasn’t taking an inordinate amount of punishement and the round was about to end. Others will say that it’s better to stop a fight one punch too soon rather one too late.

Alas, Valdez (27-0, 21 knockouts) did what he came to do, win the fight and put himself in position to challenge for a 130-pound title. He hopes to fight highly respected titleholder Miguel Berchelt, who was on hand Saturday.

“I was very surprised,” said Valdez, referring to the second-round knockdown. “I take my hat off to him. He’s a great fighter, a great warrior, just like his father was. I just got hit. This is boxing. I prepared two, three months for Gutierrez but no excuses. That kid is a warrior.

“… My experience made me win the fight. I had a great amateur background, a lot more experience than him.”

Lopez (13-2, 6 KOs) was devastated afterward, particularly because of the stoppage.

“He hurt me but I was up and fine, blocking shots (after the knockdown),” he said. “I think he caught me one time. The referee just jumped in and stopped it. I would’ve been fine. I think I was up on the cards. It’s a shame. This is boxing. Nothing I can do about it.

“I’d like a rematch. I’m not a 130-pounder but I’m a real fighter. I’ll take on anyone, anywhere.”

In time, Lopez probably will see he accomplished more in defeat than many fighters do in victory. He demonstrated admirable skill and poise for a such a young fighter. He’s only 23. This defeat could be the start of something big for him.

He was asked afterward whether he thinks he made his father proud of him. He responded with a shaky voice, “I’m sure he’s up there smiling.”

Steelers LB T.J. Watt making a strong case for DPOY

Here’s a gallery of the best pics of Steelers LB T.J. Watt.

With only five games left to play, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt is making a strong push to be a frontrunner for Defensive Player of the Year. In only his third season, Watt has ascended into the upper echelon of NFL defenders. One of his biggest challengers for the title might be teammate  Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Here are Watt’s current stats heading into the Steelers Week 13 matchup with the Cleveland Browns.

Tackles-37

Tackles for loss-10

Quarterback hits-25

Sacks-11.5

Passes defended-5

Forced fumbles-5

Fumbles recovered-3

Interceptions-1

If this isn’t a DPOY resume I don’t know what is. Check out our gallery of some of the best photos of Watt so far this season.

The ultimate game day guide: Steelers vs Browns preview

Here is our weekly game preview.

Mandatory Credit: Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to the ultimate Pittsburgh Steelers gameday preview on the internet. This is where you come to find everything you need to know about the Steelers and their upcoming opponent! Mike Drakulich (@PghSportsNation) of Steelers Wire brings you inside the huddle for both teams, providing all fans with a game preview, Steelers keys to success, score prediction, fantasy football focus, game information, a detailed breakdown of each team, individual stats, team stats, and team injury reports. Heck, you’ll even know the weather at kickoff. The only thing you’re missing is a game uniform.

Steelers defense hungry for rematch vs Browns

When mentioning the word “rivals” the Cleveland Browns have been pretty far down the list since the mid-90’s.

Yes, there is no love lost between Pittsburgh and Cleveland, but it’s kind of hard to call someone a rival when you thump your opponent over, and over, and over again. Since 1999, the Steelers are 34-7-1 vs the Browns.

The bug does not have a rivalry with the windshield… and the Steelers, like the windshield, always wins when it comes to the Browns.

On November 14th, the bug finally put a crack in the windshield, as the Browns defeated the Steelers 21-7. All it took for the Browns was the Steelers to be minus Ben Roethlisberger, Stephen Tuitt, and Benny Snell. Lost during the game was Juju Smith-Shuster and Diontae Johnson to headhunting hits by the Browns defense. James Conner re-injured his shoulder within a few series. Oh, and Mason Rudolph has his worst game of his career, tossing four interceptions.

Yet, there were the Steelers, only down a score for much of the 2nd half.

Their resiliency has been amazing, to say the least.

Oh, and lest we forget the whole Myles Garrett vs Rudolph incident at the end of the game.

Last week vs Cincinnati, Rudolph continued to struggle, which prompted Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin to bench Rudolph, and insert Devlin Hodges into the game. As he did during his appearances against the Ravens and Chargers, Hodges seemed poised in the pocket, doing just enough to give the team a chance to win.

He had the Ravens beat if it weren’t for a fumble by Smith-Schuster in OT. The Steelers were just a few yards away from Chris Boswell’s range and a rousing win. He outplayed future HOF QB Phillip Rivers on the road in LA.

Last week, in the first series he entered the game, he zipped a ball 40 yards downfield to James Washington who took the ball in stride, and rumbled into the end-zone after punking a Bengals defender.

Now Hodges has a chance to add to his lore, as the Steelers have a huge chance to exact some revenge against Cleveland, whom if they beat, will have their playoff hopes on the intersection of slim and none.

One thing is for sure, you can expect a physical, hard-hitting affair when these two teams hook up Sunday afternoon at Heinz Field.

Just don’t look for any dirty tactics by Pittsburgh.

“We’re never the initiators of that,” said Steelers guard Ramon Foster, of tempers flaring. “Look back and see, I don’t think so. People always want to get their rocks off against us. For whatever reason if that’s how they feel, so be it. We’re not going to be the idiots getting penalties this weekend, I know that for sure.”

The crowd will be loud and boisterous, and the defense will be hungry to appease them, but they will do it the right way.

“We’re all professionals. We know how to carry ourselves. We’re grown men,” Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick said. “We’re going to put emotions aside, hard feelings aside, everything else aside. It might put a little more fuel in the fire, obviously, but I don’t think there’ll be any unnecessary actions like there were the first game.”

Do look for the Steelers to jump-start the rushing attack behind the capable legs of Benny Snell.

“Oh, man, you talk about the spark,” Steelers offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner said. “Now, we can talk about the real spark.”

Snell ran for a career-high 98 yards last week vs Cincinnati. Now he is hungry for more.

“His spark (was) just in his run demeanor,” Fichtner said. “The idea of coming back from injury and not blinking from the first time he stepped on the practice field through the game. Man, he ran with strength. He ran with power. I think he’ll feel better in time.”

Also look for Jaylen Samuels, Trey Edmunds, and Kerrith Whyte to see carries at various series in the game.

“We were going to try and share as many reps as possible because you didn’t want to overload him,” Fichtner said about Snell. “I think the situation kind of called, and he kept begging. When he’s begging, you feel good. … There’s a confidence level there that he shared with us.”

Snell is welcoming as many carries as he can get, as he feels stronger as the game goes deeper into the clock.

“I feel like that is one of my best attributes,” Snell said. “I feel like I get better as the game goes on.”

The offensive line has Snell’s back, and they are excited to provide Snell with a few holes to burst through, and take advantage of a poor Browns run defense.

“I love his tenacity,” Foster said. “It’s pretty cool. It’s refreshing. I told him at practice that I love what you do. In the sense of a young guy, when he runs, good or bad, he’s jaw-jacking a little bit. Nothing malicious. It’s cool to see him excited to play football in this day and age when people are trying to attack the game in negative ways. He’s the way that I remember it in the sense that he’s gritty. I love it.”

Watch: Extended Highlights of Notre Dame’s 45-24 Win at Stanford

Since we won’t have a notre Dame game to watch for almost a month why not live in the moment and enjoy extended highlights from Saturday’s win over Stanford?

The next time we see Notre Dame playing a football game it’ll probably be taking place in Orlando just after Christmas.

From then we have to wait to the annual tease that is the spring game before the regular season begins August 29 against Navy in Dublin, Ireland.

In the meantime, how about living in the now? Check out the highlights from Saturday’s regular season finale that moved Notre Dame to 10-2.

The win was Notre Dame’s first at Stanford since 2007 and Brian Kelly’s first victory there as head coach.

Jags go from favorites to 2.5-point underdogs to Bucs

In just a matter of days, the Jags went from favorites vs. the Bucs to underdogs and it was likely due to some key injuries.

The Jacksonville Jaguars opened the week as 1.5-point favorites over the Tampa Bay Bucs, but that’s no longer the case. Per BetMGM, they are now 2.5-point underdogs for their upcoming in-state battle Week 13.

The Jags’ final injury report for Week 13 had multiple starters listed as questionable, including linebacker Myles Jack and corner Tre Herndon, who were ruled questionable while safety Ronnie Harrison was ruled out with a concussion. That’s not a good position to be in with the No. 4 ranked passing defense coming into town, especially when considering the Jags’ defense was struggling all around even when they were 100%. That said, their iffy status health-wise seemingly caught the eyes of oddsmakers.

The Jaguars went from being a -115 favorite on the money line to a +115 underdog in the category. The over/under for the game also decreased from 48.5 to 47.5.

Heading into Sunday’s game fans can honestly say the Jags have been difficult to gauge with a 5-6 record against the spread. They also are below .500 against the spread at home with a 2-3 record.

James Harden honors NBA legend Vince Carter in postgame interview

After scoring 60 points in just three quarters, Rockets star James Harden paused his postgame interview to honor NBA legend Vince Carter.

Houston Rockets guard James Harden scored a historic 60 points in just three quarters during Saturday’s huge win over Atlanta. But a big part of his postgame interview was about one of his legendary NBA opponents.

Now 42 years old and in his 22nd and final season, Saturday (box score) was most likely the final game in Houston for Hawks swingman and future Basketball Hall of Famer Vince Carter, barring a trade or buyout.

After starting his postgame interview with local network AT&T SportsNet Southwest, Harden paused for about 30 seconds to recognize Carter on his way off the court. The entire exchange played out on live television.

Courtside reporter Cayleigh Griffin, who was interviewing Harden, made it clear that she had no objections at all to the brief delay.

Harden’s 60 points on 24 field-goal attempts during Saturday’s blowout victory were the fewest of any player in NBA history to score 60. The former NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) also tied Michael Jordan for career 60+ point games at four, which is the third-most in NBA history. No other active player has more than one 60+ point game.

Harden now leads the NBA at 38.9 points per game, which is nearly eight points per game above the No. 2 scorer (Giannis Antetokounmpo) at 31.2 points. That 38.9 total would be the highest in over 55 NBA seasons.
