Why Colorado Will Win

It’s the part of the College Football Playoff rankings that people don’t like to talk about at parties …

You have as many wins over teams currently ranked in the CFP top 25 as Utah does.

That goes for Alabama, too, by the way.

Yes, Utah has been fantastic. Yes, the defense is incredible. Yes, the offense is brutally efficient and playing as well as any in college football right now …

Against a whole slew of mediocre teams.

Colorado has picked itself up off the mat after a five-game losing streak to beat Stanford and Washington to get into a position to go bowling.

The team is playing hard for head coach Mel Tucker. QB Steven Montez and the passing game are good enough to challenge a Ute secondary that hasn’t bee pressed for weeks, and more than anything else, ALL of the pressure is on the other side of the field.

Yeah, the Buffs are trying to get bowl eligible, but it’s a beauty contest right now, and Utah can’t just win, it has to be impressive doing it. Colorado has the firepower to make this – at the very least – look cosmetically close.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Utah Will Win

Let’s just forget about Colorado running the ball.

The Buff ground attack isn’t bad. It’s getting decent production out of a few nice young backs, there are enough good moments from the offensive line to complement what Montez and the passing game can do, and the O was able to blast away for over 200 yards against the terrific Washington defensive front.

Utah’s D line is a whole other animal.

The Utes gave up 111 rushing yards to Arizona State, and that’s been it. No one else has cracked the 95 yard mark. Bradlee Anae and the rest of the Ute defensive front are taking turns hanging out behind the line, but it’s the overall scheme and play of the nation’s leading run defense that’s triggering everything else.

There are way too many penalties, but other than that, Utah doesn’t screw up. There aren’t a slew of bad turnovers, the defense isn’t breaking too often even when it does bend, and best of all right now, the team appears to be playing with as much confidence as any outside of Columbus.

That’s what happens when you allow seven points or fewer five of your last six games.

What’s Going To Happen

Colorado will move the ball a bit on the Utes.

Montez will connect on just enough throws to keep the chains moving and go on a few nice drives, and then …

The Utah defense will happen.

The Utes will get their normal offensive production out of the stars in the backfield – Zack Moss will come up with his fifth-straight 100-yard game – Tyler Huntley will connect on 75% of his throws, and the tone will be set for the Pac-12 Championship.
