Trey Sermon compares Justin Fields to former Oklahoma QBs Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield

Ohio State running back Trey Sermon met with the media for the first time and compared Justin Fields to Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray.

It’s never easy to compare players because each is his own guy, but that doesn’t stop many from stacking guys up against each other for fun debates and comparables.

Graduate Oklahoma transfer Trey Sermon came to Ohio State with experience playing with former Heisman winners Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray in Norman. Now, he’s playing with another bronze statue frontrunner in OSU quarterback Justin Fields.

Sermon was made available on a zoom call with reporters early this week, and it was natural for the media to ask the OSU newcomer to compare Fields with those other two great QBs he played with in a former life.

So did Sermon take the bait? He didn’t shy away from it, but he stayed away from ranking one of the three better than the others. However, he did compare Fields more favorably to Murray than Mayfield.

“For one, they’re all great quarterbacks,” Sermon said. “They’re all very dynamic. And, I would kind of say Justin is more similar to Kyler as far as being dynamic. I mean he had great running ability as well. And I mean just, they all have great leadership, and that’s just another thing that I seen in Justin that I saw in those guys. They just take the field, they’re confident in what they do. They do a great job of just taking charge of the team.”

Hopefully, this season ends on a personal level like it did with Mayfield and Murray — with a trip to New York to hoist the Heisman Trophy.
