Tracking the NBA draft stock of the top Kentucky Wildcats’ prospects

With the college basketball season officially over, USA TODAY SMG’s Rookie Wire is looking at draft stock for players on top NCAA teams.

EJ MONTGOMERY, Forward (Sophomore)

CURRENT PROJECTION: Undrafted

Aside from Tyrese Maxey, sophomore big EJ Montgomery was the highest-rated recruit on Kentucky’s roster in 2019-20.

Montgomery averaged 23.7 points, 10.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game on the prep circuit in high school. He averaged 12.6 points, 9.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game during the adidas Uprising tournament in 2017.

His freshman campaign was a bit of a disappointment, however, as he put up just 3.8 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. Even though Montgomery was a bit better as a sophomore, he still managed just 6.1 points with 5.4 rebounds per game.

The forward connected on 41-of-52 (78.8%) attempts within five feet of the basket. However, he was just 30-for-85 (35.3%) on all other attempts during his 2019-20 campaign. Due to a lack of elite defensive productivity, he still has a lot to improve on as an offensive prospect before he can be considered a pro talent.
