Top five Texas football heartbreaks in the last 20 years

While the Longhorns have provided many exhilarating wins over the past 20 years, there’s also been heartbreaking losses.

No. 1 – Texas vs. Texas Tech – 2008

This loss was so heartbreaking that it likely still haunts all those who experienced it. The No. 1 ranked Longhorns traveled to Lubbock to face the No. 7 Red Raiders.

While this matchup provided many ups and downs, the final minute of the game was unheard of. After a deflected pass was shockingly dropped by four-time All-Big 12 safety Blake Gideon with 8 seconds left in the game, something even worse happened.

Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell completed a 28-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Michael Crabtree with 1 second remaining. The Longhorns had numerous chances to stop the Red Raiders on their last drive.

The image of Crabtree breaking a tackle and walking into the endzone will haunt Texas forever. This loss ultimately eliminated the Longhorns from contending for the National Championship that season.

Final Score: 33-39
