Following West Virginia’s field goal that cut the lead to just four in the third quarter, they would get the ball twice in the fourth. They had two opportunities to take the lead and failed on both instances. On the first drive there was 13:48 remaining in the game. The Longhorns helped set up WVU with good field position.

A T.J. Simmons catch and run netted the Mountaineers 29 yards. However they received 15 more on a Ojomo roughing the passer call. WVU would get the the Texas 25-yard line but would get no further than the 16. Facing a forth down and one, they opted to throw the ball which fell incomplete. The Longhorns would take over on downs.

Their next attempt came with 9:19 left to go. Again the Mountaineers would drive down the field through the passing game. They drove as deep as the Texas 8-yard line but wouldn’t go any further. Again facing a fourth and one, Doege made a pass attempt into the end zone. Chris Brown would battle with the receiver and probably should have been called for pass interference. He wasn’t and Texas would regain possession of the football with 4:44 left to go, WVU never saw the ball again.
