Three names to keep an eye out for the offensive coordinator position

Firing Tim Beck, Texas is looking for a new offensive coordinator for the first time in three years. Here are names to keep an eye out for.

Rhett Lashlee

This may be a long shot, but Rhett Lashlee has had some high profile jobs in the past and may be ready to take another step up to the top. Currently working at SMU, Lashlee has been the offensive coordinator for the Mustangs for two seasons. He previously has worked with UConn and Auburn. He was the offensive coordinator at Auburn during their 2013 national championship run with Head Coach Gus Malzhan.

The Mustangs are currently the 12th ranked passing offense in the country with former Longhorn Shane Buechele under center. While the rushing attack is just inside the top 50, what the Mustangs have done this year is score a lot of points. They are sixth in the nation in scoring, averaging 43 points a game. Before Lashlee showed up, they were only in the top 50 in scoring once since 2010. His best work came in 2013, where Auburn made it to the national championship. The offense shined against ranked opponents, scoring nearly 40 a game against some of the best defenses in the SEC. At the end of the season, he won the Broyles Award, an award given to the best assistant coach in the country.

Lashlee would be an underrated hire for the Longhorns that could translate to success right away. Not only is he a Broyles Award winner, but he has been on a journey to a national championship. SMU currently has one of the best offenses in the nation, even if they are facing Group of 5 opponents. Like Harrell, Lashlee could come into Austin and elevate the offense to make it more explosive than it already is.
