Three hurdles for Texas to be back per ESPN Analyst

According to ESPN writer Bill Connelly, there are three obstacles ahead of the Longhorns in order to get back to elite status.

Ash must find a pass rush

It is no secret that the Texas Longhorns have missed having a big time pass rush. For this defense to succeed they need to get to the quarterback and disrupt the passing game. Just think back to the Valero Alamo Bowl and what Joseph Ossai was able to do to the Utah Offense that was averaging over 30 points per game. They scored just 10 total points in a game that was seemingly over by the end of the third quarter.

In 2018 Charles Omenihu was able to corral 9.5 sacks for the defense but following his departure, only Ossai was able to record more than three sacks for the defense. The team must generate more pressure whether that is Ossai, newcomer Alfred Collins or from blitzing at the second and third levels of the defense. The Longhorns have made a more concerted effort to recruit on the edges. It will take some time before we truly see the fruits of their labor but in the meantime Ossai needs to be the one leading from the front.
