The Cardinals had several players perform at a much higher level and have a much bigger role than probably anyone expected.

Gonzalez was a great college kicker. Fans here in Arizona know that because he played at Arizona State. However, his pro career had been a disappointment so far before the Cardinals signed him in 2018 late in the year.

It seemed highly questionable that the team didn’t bring in any competition in the offseason, especially when there were a couple of wobbly practices in training camp.

But he ended up with one of the best kicking seasons the Cardinals have had in a while. Kliff Kingsbury credits special teams coach Jeff Rodgers for seeing the potential and Gonzalez proved the organization right.
