Can’t win. Only good for sparring. No chance of even being a real contender. You better just give up kid—er, I mean, robot!

Real Steel deserves more credit than it usually gets for taking the typical boxing film themes and creating a cool twist—a perfectly executed, futuristic flip that left the audience pulling for a 2000-pound, eight-foot-tall steel robot with the same enthusiasm as they did for Rocky. While the film was generally given a “meh” due to some of the silliness and one of Hollywood’s favorite go-to critiques, “the writing,” none of the jeers should negate the cheers for Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) and the action-packed creativity that dipped into nostalgia while adding futuristic surprises.
