Texas ranked as one of the most talented rosters in the country

According to 247Sports Team Talent Composite, there’s no excuse for Texas’ underwhelming 2-2 record.

After suffering back-to-back conference losses in questionable fashion, there are plenty of concerns surrounding the Texas football program as they begin their second bye week on the schedule.

There is nothing more frustrating as a fan than to watch one of the most talented rosters not be able to produce on the field. Expectations were sky high due to Texas’ three consecutive top eight recruiting classes in the nation in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

At one point this season, the Longhorns were ranked as the No. 8 team in the country. The tumble began when unranked TCU handed Texas their first loss of the season, dropping them down to the No. 22 spot. After falling to Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry, Texas is now absent from the Associated Press Top 25 and Amway Coaches Poll.

There’s no excuse for the way Texas performed against the Horned Frogs and Sooners when you take a look at 247Sports’ 2020 Team Talent Composite rankings.

Under fourth-year head coach Tom Herman, the Longhorns have the No. 5 most talented roster in the country behind Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson. The majority of big-time programs listed within the top 10 have consistently competed for championships.

“Herman had all of the pieces he needed to make a run. He can’t blame talent on Texas’ 2-2 start to the season,” said 247Sports National College Football reporter Chris Hummer.

These rankings further solidify that there may be a coaching issue at Texas that boils down to player development. Although it’s loaded with talent, Herman is currently fielding one of the most undisciplined college football teams in the nation. Three of the four contests were littered with bonehead penalties, mistakes and questionable play-calling.

Herman’s successful recruiting classes can only provide job security for so long. Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte may have no other choice but to take this program in a new direction due to lack of production with such talented rosters.
