Texas QB’s Hudson Card and Quinn Ewers to split reps evenly throughout spring practices

Ewers will receive his fair shot this spring.

Texas held their first day of spring practice on Tuesday.

It was the first chance for fans to see Ohio State transfer quarterback Quinn Ewers in Texas gear among other fresh faces that were added to the roster this offseason.

Second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian dropped several interesting nuggets when speaking to the media shortly after practice concluded, but one of the most telling centered around the quarterback competition.

While Hudson Card is expected to have the leg up in the quarterback battle throughout the spring due to his experience and being in his second season of Sarkisian’s system, Ewers will receive his fair shot. Sarkisian told the media that the reps will be split evenly between Card and Ewers this spring.

It’s not shocking to see the two split reps, as many are confident Ewers will win the job outright prior to Texas’ season opener on Sept. 3. Keep in mind that last season Card seemingly received less reps with the starters than Casey Thompson throughout offseason practices, yet ended up being named the starter in Week 1.

Sarkisian will have another tough decision to make at the quarterback position, and hopefully one will separate from the other unlike last year’s back and forth approach.

In order for Texas to compete for a Big 12 title this season, they’ll need elite play at the quarterback position.
