Texas lands at No. 11 in Phil Steele’s college football preseason ranking

This feels like a realistic spot for the Longhorns.

Phil Steele revealed his preseason college football Top 40 this week.

Texas landed at No. 11, a seemingly realistic spot for the Longhorns heading into 2023. Steve Sarkisian’s squad is viewed as the clear favorite to win the Big 12 title this upcoming season, but they may be a year or two away from reaching the College Football Playoff.

There’s an outside chance that Texas could be among the playoff contenders if they are able to defeat Alabama in Tuscaloosa in Week 2, along with getting through the Big 12 slate unscathed, but that’s a tall ask.

Four other Big 12 programs were among Steele’s Top 40. Oklahoma, TCU, Kansas State, and Texas Tech were featured. Each of these teams will likely be Texas’ toughest competition en route to the Big 12 Championship.

Here’s a look at the top-10 teams ranked ahead of Texas.

  1. Georgia
  2. Clemson
  3. Michigan
  4. Alabama
  5. Ohio State
  6. Penn State
  7. USC
  8. Florida State
  9. LSU
  10. Notre Dame
