Texas Football: What the Longhorns need to do down the final stretch

Breaking down the three areas that the Texas Longhorns need to improve in the final stretch of the 2020 College Football Season.

Ehlinger’s Accuracy Must Improve

As noted in the introduction, Ehlinger’s accuracy has been a problem as of late. Especially when throwing the ball down the field as compared to last year. It has been a significant drop off and even last season, his numbers great.

Season Comp Att Comp % Yards YPA TDs INTs
2019 33 83 39.8 1,129 13.6 13 3
2020 14 55 25.5 480 8.7 6 3

This definitely helps with defending the pass against Texas. The inaccuracy down the field allows teams to take away the underneath throws where Ehlinger really excels at. He completes at least 69.2% of his passes when attacking defenses from behind the line of scrimmage to 19 yards down field. Anything beyond that is a coin toss. Except this coin has four sides and one means a completed pass.

Against West Virginia, Sam completed just 4/10 passes when throwing outside the numbers to both sides of the field. He would complete 11/21 over the middle of the field. Still not great by Ehlinger’s standards. He has thrived in this area. Whatever is ailing him whether it be physical, mental or mechanically needs to be fixed for the team to make a run.
