Continue running the football
The running game hasn’t been anywhere near where many thought it was going to be after last year. All three running backs have had their fair share of injuries, the latest being junior running back Keaontay Ingram who is dealing with a high ankle sprain. The team has used a running back by committee approach where they split the load.
Back | Att | Yards | YPA | TDs | Touch | Yards | YPT | TDs |
Ingram | 53 | 250 | 4.7 | 1 | 64 | 353 | 5.5 | 2 |
Johnson | 52 | 221 | 4.3 | 2 | 57 | 249 | 4.4 | 3 |
Robinson | 51 | 294 | 5.8 | 0 | 60 | 399 | 6.7 | 0 |
Bijan Robinson has been far and away the most effective running back on the team yet has received the least carries. The team has used him more as of late, against Oklahoma State and West Virginia he carried the ball 25 times. During the two games he has 172 yards rushing for an average of 6.9 yards per carry.
Running the ball is a staple in the Tom Herman offense. Given what Robinson has shown this year, they need to feed him more than 12 or 13 times a game. He needs at minimum 20 touches and sprinkle in Roschon Johnson and Ingram once he is healthy.
In #Texas’ last 3 games, Bijan Robinson is generating an explosive play every 5.8 touches & he’s averaging an explosive rush every 6.1 rushes for the #Longhorns. He’s also averaging 6.1 yds per carry, 11.5 yds per reception & 6.7 yards per touch in the last 3 wks for the #Horns. https://t.co/L2YEUYqQnR
