Defensive line

The Texas defensive line struggled mightily last year as Texas was only able to register 20 sacks as a team and gave up over 200 yards rushing per game. This group was often referred to as a committee, and given that they didn’t specialize in any aspect they were more just big bodies taking up space. The staff swung and missed on multiple transfer portal targets that could have boosted what was a mediocre group at best.

With most of the same players returning, this group either needs someone like boom-or-bust candidate Barynn Sorell to burst onto the scene, or one of the talented freshmen like Justice Finkley to have an impact right away. Having to depend on freshmen is something that is not ideal, and it wouldn’t come as a surprise if this group struggles again in 2022.
