Texas Football: Sam Ehlinger receives invite to the Senior Bowl

Sam Ehlinger will have a decision to make upon the conclusion of the season. The QB will be headed to the Senior Bowl first if he declares.

Each year the top seniors with NFL aspirations meet in Mobile, Alabama for the annual Reese’s Senior Bowl. This is an opportunity for NFL Draft prospects to meet with prospective teams that may draft them or even sign them as undrafted free agents. Last year Brandon Jones, Collin Johnson and Devin Duvernay were all invited to the week long event. Duvernay was the only one who took part in the on-field activities throughout the week. They go through daily practices led by a NFL coaching staff and participate in the game on the Saturday following.

This year one Texas Longhorn has already been invited. Texas senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger has received his invite. It remains to be seen if Ehlinger will return next year for the Longhorns. With the ruling by the NCAA to freeze eligibility, seniors such as Ehlinger could return for another year. Many believe this will be his final season, however he could return if this year doesn’t result in a Big 12 Championship for the Horns. They are still very much in the thick of the conference race.

Earlier in the season, the Athletic’s Dane Brugler sat down with the Locked on Longhorns Podcast team to discuss Ehlinger’s future in the NFL. Going as far as to say that one NFL team had a preseason second-round grade on the Austin native. He was Brugler’s fifth-ranked quarterback overall. ESPN’s Todd McShay had him listed as the No. 124 prospect on his big board. That likely puts him in the third-fourth round range.

He will likely start out as a backup with hopes of developing into a NFL starting caliber quarterback.
