2021 Senior Bowl proved to be important to Chargers’ draft

For Chargers general manager Tom Telesco, the draft starts in Mobile.

The draft starts in Mobile.

For the 32 NFL teams in attendance, the Senior Bowl is a chance to see some of college football’s top players square off in a week of practices and a full game to wrap things up in order to prove to them that they can prepare, practice and compete like pros.

Within all of the action on the football field, this is team’s first opportunity to sit down and get to know the prospects after watching them for years at their perspective school and talking to their coaches to gain more information on them.

However, this year’s Senior Bowl was even more vital to team’s evaluation process than previous ones because of the limited exposure to players during the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused a handful of cancelled games and opt outs.

Chargers general manager Tom Telesco already had a track record of drafting players that partook in the event. But him and the evaluators really took advantage of this one in particular, as the team went on to select five players that they had the chance to watch and meet with.

Wide receiver Josh Palmer, tight end Tre’ McKitty, offensive tackle Brenden Jaimes, running back Larry Rountree III and safety Mark Webb all participated in the 2021 Senior Bowl.

That marks 21 Senior Bowl participants that Los Angeles has either signed or drafted since 2017.

The other 16?

Telesco stuck to his guns this year, bringing in good football players that are also good people, tough, competitive and fit the culture of what he wants them to be both on and off the field.

Texas Football: Sam Ehlinger receives invite to the Senior Bowl

Sam Ehlinger will have a decision to make upon the conclusion of the season. The QB will be headed to the Senior Bowl first if he declares.

Each year the top seniors with NFL aspirations meet in Mobile, Alabama for the annual Reese’s Senior Bowl. This is an opportunity for NFL Draft prospects to meet with prospective teams that may draft them or even sign them as undrafted free agents. Last year Brandon Jones, Collin Johnson and Devin Duvernay were all invited to the week long event. Duvernay was the only one who took part in the on-field activities throughout the week. They go through daily practices led by a NFL coaching staff and participate in the game on the Saturday following.

This year one Texas Longhorn has already been invited. Texas senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger has received his invite. It remains to be seen if Ehlinger will return next year for the Longhorns. With the ruling by the NCAA to freeze eligibility, seniors such as Ehlinger could return for another year. Many believe this will be his final season, however he could return if this year doesn’t result in a Big 12 Championship for the Horns. They are still very much in the thick of the conference race.

Earlier in the season, the Athletic’s Dane Brugler sat down with the Locked on Longhorns Podcast team to discuss Ehlinger’s future in the NFL. Going as far as to say that one NFL team had a preseason second-round grade on the Austin native. He was Brugler’s fifth-ranked quarterback overall. ESPN’s Todd McShay had him listed as the No. 124 prospect on his big board. That likely puts him in the third-fourth round range.

He will likely start out as a backup with hopes of developing into a NFL starting caliber quarterback.

Senior Bowl Week: Big Opportunity for Texas Longhorns Duo

The Texas Longhorns top receiving duo arrive in Mobile this week for the Senior Bowl. Devin Duvernay and Collin Johnson are ready to shine.

Every year the best seniors arrive in Mobile, Alabama for one of the largest job interviews of the offseason. Players will be assigned a team for a game to be played on Saturday, coached by NFL staffs. During the week, players will work with coaches, meet with teams and try to catch the eye of NFL scouts. For two Texas Longhorns wide receivers, this will be an opportunity to improve their NFL Draft stock. Both players are currently projected as late day two or early day three prospects.

Devin Duvernay had one of the best seasons in school history, becoming only the third Longhorn ever to catch 100 passes, finishing second to Jordan Shipley. His 1,386 yards also second to Shipley for the most in a single season. There is no denying his talent, now Duvernay has the opportunity to show NFL teams what he is capable of against the best college football has to offer.

For Collin Johnson it is a little different. Injuries derailed his season early on before returning just in time for the Alamo Bowl against Utah. Johnson gets the opportunity to show that he is healthy and ready to compete with the other wide receivers during the week. His entire body of work speaks for itself and due to his size, teams will try to figure out how to maximize his value at the next level.

The Senior Bowl week will commence on Tuesday with practice according to their website.

Texas Safety Brandon Jones Out At Senior Bowl?

Texas Longhorns safety Brandon Jones is no longer active on Senior Bowl rosters, could there be an injury?

The Reese’s Senior Bowl is a great opportunity for NFL hopeful’s to work with NFL coaches and impress scouts in one of their final opportunities ahead of the NFL Combine and Pro Day workouts. The Longhorns had three players that accepted invites to participate in the week long festivities. That list appears to be down to two.

Texas safety Brandon Jones did not participate in the Longhorns’ bowl win over the Utah Utes and now appears to be out for the Senior Bowl. Brandon Jones has been projected as a top 100 draft selection in most mock drafts. He still should be participating in the NFL Combine that takes place February 23rd through March 2nd.

Nothing on Jones has been released at this time and it is a situation that will be monitored.

Another Pair of Notre Dame Stars Headed to Senior Bowl

We’ve given you the stories on both Chase Claypool and Jalen Elliott but that’s not enough as a couple of other Notre Dame seniors accepted their invitations to the annual Mobile, Alabama event today.

Enter Troy Pride, Jr. and Khalid Kareem.

Pride has 33 tackles on the year along with one interception, as he recorded his first last-Saturday at Duke.
